1. Solve the following equations by Gauss-Elimination method:
5x + 8y + 2z = 19
3x + 3y – 4z = 13
x + 6y + 2z = 11 [16]

2.a] Consider steady state heat loss through a straight long fin with temperatures of the
fin base and the surrounding fluid are Tb and Tf respectively. Assume the heat loss
from the end face of to be negligible. Derive the governing equation for the
problem.
b] Describe an algorithm for solving the above problem to get the temperature
Distribution along the fin and to obtain the fin efficiency. [8+8]

3. Explain the consistency with a suitable example. [16]

4. Derive the first order accurate back ward finite difference approximation for the
mixed partial derivative of ‘f’ with respect to ‘x’ and ‘y’ using Taylor series
expansion. [16]

5.a] Differentiate integral approach and Differential approach.


b] Write the governing equations used in CFD in generic form. [8+8]

6. Explain the advantage of expressing the flow equations in non-dimensional form.

7. Explain the reasons for adapting Alternate Direction Implicit methods in dealing
with multi-dimensional problems. Describe the method with a suitable heat
transfer problem. [16]

8. Derive the Quasi one- dimensional compressible flow equations for flow through
a nozzle. Explain the method of capturing the shock in dealing with the nozzle
flows. [16]
