Dental Hygiene Scope of Practice

Primary HC​ - rostering requirements

- Primary health care reform groups require certain percentage of clients formalize their
relationships with group by signing a form agreeing to become part of doctor’s practice
- If a rostered client visits another medical doctor for a non-emergency health problem, the
government will deduct from the family doctor’s monthly stipend the fee for that visit

Interprofessional practice: ​is to improve patient outcomes within healthcare - 2 or more


professionals working as a team, with a common purpose, and mutual respect

Intra Vs. Inter


- Inter - between professions (collaborating)
- Intra - within (rdh to rdh)

DH practices inter/intra by sharing info with others about DH scope of practice/knowledge,


clarifying their role, being available in timely manner, using effective/secure communication,
respecting expertise/contributions of others, provide relevant oral health info, practice
cooperatively, collaborate with community, and demonstrate commitment to
community/professional organizations
Collaboration: ​the process of DH working with the client and or health professional to achieve
common goals

Collaborative Relationship:​ an alliance of DH with the client and or health professional to


develop a SINGLE, integrated and comprehensive approach based on clients needs, resources
and barriers

Standards of Practice: ​ published by the college and other authorities to clarify the
roles/responsibilities of the DH and to provide framework to measure the quality of DH program/
services.

- Specific guidelines as to who must attend (family member must be present)
