Community Expressive Arts Programs 2010-2011


Through partnerships with local non-profit organizations,
Arts for Humanity! programs engage at-risk youth,
persons with developmental disabilities, and
seniors in the creative arts.

Transition Program
Dedicated to aiding persons with special needs ages 18-22 through education, work, and life
skills this program provides ongoing Expressive Arts Classes (visual art), and Creative Theatre
and Movement Groups. Sponsored by the Santa Barbara High School District, classes are held
at Santa Barbara City College.
Program: Creative Art and/or Creative Theatre and Dance
Schedule: Every Other Friday 12:00 – 2:00 pm (can come at 11:00am for lunch w/ kids)
New San Marcos Transition Program Schedule TBA

Teen Extreme, held at Alpha Resource Center


A Friday night social gathering for teens with developmental disabilities in junior high and
early high school, this program is held at Alpha Resource Center, a non-profit organization
providing services and support for people with developmental disabilities and their families.

Program: Teen Extreme - Creative Art, Creative Theatre and Dance, and/or
Expressive Music
Schedule: Friday, 6:30 – 8:00pm

Isla Vista Teen Center


This organization provides bilingual/bicultural after-school programs, primarily focused on the
enhancement of academic achievement but also provides a place for local youth to hang out
and experience cultural opportunities.
Program: Creative Art, Creative Theatre and Movement, and/or
Expressive Music, ex. “Drum for Fun” or “Music Magic”

Boys & Girls Club (Downtown)
The Boys & Girls Club of Santa Barbara, Inc. has been changing lives for nearly 70 years by
providing young people with hope and opportunity, a safe place to learn and grow, ongoing
relationships with caring, adult professionals and life-enhancing programs and character
development experiences.

Program: “Theatre of Imagination” Creative Theatre and Movement class (for ages 6-12)
Schedule: Fridays, 4:45 – 6:15pm

Alpha Resource Center


Alpha Resource Center of Santa Barbara empowers individuals with developmental
disabilities, supports families and fosters a community that values the contribution of all
people.

Instructor: Karsen (Interns can assist)


Program: Creative Theatre & Movement
Schedule: Weekly, Thursdays from 1:15pm – 2:30pm

Transition House
For 25 years, Transition House has provided food, shelter and services to Santa Barbara's
families who have lost their housing. Each year, the Transition House Auxiliary organizes this
fun and popular event. Proceeds benefit the many diversified, effective programs and services
that Transition House provides to homeless families with children.

Schedule: Tuesdays, 5:30 – 6:00pm

Garden Court
Garden Court offers an independent and fulfilling lifestyle to Santa Barbara seniors and is a
lively community where planned and impromptu activities are a part of their every day.

Program: Creative Art and/or Interactive Arts and Life Stories


Schedule: Weekly, Tuesdays at 3:00 or Saturday at 1:00, Fridays 11:00 12:30pm possible
Additional Availability: Tuesdays at 3:00, or Saturdays at 1:00, 1.5 hours

Braille Institute
Braille Institute is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to eliminate barriers to a fulfilling
life caused by blindness and severe sight loss. The Institute provides an environment of hope
and encouragement for people who are blind and visually impaired through integrated
educational, social and recreational programs and services. The organization provides
assistance to more than 75,000 people across five regional centers in Southern California and
through more than 350 Community Outreach locations.
Program: Expressive and Interactive Arts for visually impaired

Work Training Programs, Inc (Returning Program)
WTP offers a variety of employment services to assist individuals with disabilities or
disadvantages to overcome barriers to employment by strategically placing them in work
environments that are compatible with their interests, talents and abilities.
Program: Expressive and Interactive Arts for developmentally disabled adults

Cottage Rehabilitation Hospital (CRH), (Returning Program), Expressive Arts Workshop


Cottage Rehabilitation Hospital provides comprehensive medical rehabilitation services, for
both outpatient and inpatient care, to empower people with disabilities to achieve optimal
quality of life.
Program: Creative Art for community members and outpatients with disabilities
Schedule: First Week in May, 2011, for 6 weeks, on Tuesdays 3:00-5:00
Will begin again in February 2011 – also on Tuesdays 3:00-5:00

Friendship Manor
For 32 years, Friendship Manor has provided an affordable senior housing in the Santa
Barbara, California area. It is not just a place to live, but a home that provides comfortable
surroundings, which reinforce self-respect, self-esteem, and the dignity of aging. This
affordable senior community celebrates life and prolongs independence.

Additionally, Arts for Humanity! participates in Santa Barbara’s wonderful free public events by
providing creative enrichment programs at no charge for our local non profits and our community:

Student Pursuing Alternative Recreation in the Community! (SPARC) Arts for


Humanity! partners with Isla Vista Teen Center to provide teens the

Spontaneous Theatre individually, in pairs and in groups. The teens’ photos are then emailed out 2011

Family Service Agency’s annual Children’s Festival gives children and
families a chance to enjoy a day full of family and fun entirely for free.

riding ponies. "Spontaneous Theatre" is an event wherein Arts for Humanity!
Agency staff and interns provide an opportunity for children of all backgrounds to 2011
Spontaneous Theatre interact with each other as they dress in costumes and use props for
spontaneous theatre and imaginative play. The children also greatly enjoy
their portraits being taken as part of this event.
Special Olympics provides year-round sports training competition in a
variety of sports for individuals with intellectual disabilities, giving them
continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage,
Special Olympics experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship.

Spontaneous Theatre Spontaneous Theatre for Children is an event alongside Special Olympics
activities where youth with developmental disabilities experiment with
costumes and props to stretch their imagination and expressivity in a social
peer focused environment.
Arts for Humanity! interns recreate art by artists with disabilities from Arts
for Humanity!’s Community Expressive Arts Programs. I Madonnari, or
street painters, transforms the Santa Barbara Mission plaza using pastels on May 28-30,
I Madonarri pavement to create 150 vibrant, colorful, large scale images. The Children's 2011
Creative Project, put on by the Santa Barbara County Education Office, has
made this the first street painting festival in North America.
The Summer Solstice Celebration has evolved into a creative and original
display of floats, giant puppets, whimsical costumes and masks of more
than 1,000 parade participants, of all ethnic and economic backgrounds. It
Summer Solstice in is the largest, single-day arts event in Santa Barbara County. The parade

the Park, culminates in a festival with a wonderful collection of live world music,

AH!’s Community Events are a surprise and delight for participants, such as
our Spontaneous Theatre for Children where costumes and props provide a
plethora of creative opportunities for Santa Barbara youth.
Just Communities offers cultural competency training to organizational
leaders, education seminars for the general public, leadership training
institutes for students and teachers, and customized consultation to local
Just Communities agencies for diversity and organizational change initiatives. Just
Spontaneous Theatre Communities consciously works with people from a diverse cross-section of
the community along the lines of race, income, gender, sexual orientation,
age, and religious affiliation. Arts for Humanity! interns provide our
Spontaneous Theatre event for Just Communities annual fundraiser.
