LULAC Partnership with U.S. Census 2020

Press Conference Event to Disclose Details
Mayor Nirenberg, county officials will participate on February 8th
As one of many diverse partners with the U.S. Census 2020 campaign, LULAC District 15 of San Antonio
on Saturday, February 8, 2020 will launch its partnership with the U.S. Census 2020 outreach program. In
conjunction with its 91st Anniversay LULAC Week celebration, the Honoraable City of San Antonio Mayor Ron
Nirenberg will deliver some remarks.

U.S. Census 2020 partners are vital to ensuring a complete and accurate count. As trusted voices in the
community, partners play a key role in raising awareness that the Census 2020 count is easy, safe, and important.
Last year, the Census Bureau embarked on a nationwide effort to inform everyone living in the United States
about the upcoming 2020 census and to encourage them to respond. A full count is the key for states to get their
rightful share of federal funding over the next 10 years when Congress decides on how to divvy up more that
$675 billion in federal government assistance. The U.S. Census is much more than a count of who is residing in
the 50 states and five territorties.

Several field coordinator for Bexar County and South Texas will represent the U.S. Census 2020 campaign
and make remarks on the need for more workers and the importance of the accuracy of the work that will need to
be done over the next several months. The U.S. Census Bureau is recruiting thousands of people across the country
to assist with the Census 2020 count.

“Hard to Count” people

San Antonio is a diverse community that includes a large number of immigrants who may not speak
English, “part of the Census 2020 campaign is to make it clear that participation in the census is isolated from
immigration and all other facets of government,” explains Lupe Torres, event chair and immediate past LULAC
State Director.

For Census 2020, individuals can respond online, by mail or by phone; people who live in remote areas
may be visited by a census taker. “However, getting people to respond may be hard. Minorities and young adults
are in a category deemed “hard to count” people because they are less likely to participate according to a Pew
Research Center survey” explains Torres.

Higher self-response rates increase the accuracy of the census count and save taxpayer money by lowering
census takers follow-up costs for non-responding households. According to a U.S. Census Bureau spokesperson
it has been said that it can not overstate the importance of being involved.

In closing, the training that is being done has an emphasis on why individuals need to be involved in the
count and to educate the public on the importance of assuring that marginalized groups and the communities are
included,” concludes Torres.

By law, the U.S. Census Bureau is required to protect personal information collected and keep all
responses to the survey strictly confidential. The U.S. Constitution (Article 1, Section 2) mandates that a census
be conducted once every 10 years for the purposes of reapportioning Congressional districts.

Congressional financial assistance is available for infrasastructure, agriculture, housing and urban
development, transportation, education, health and human servies, fire stations, Head Start and economic
empowerment along with many more services, such as hospitals, health care jobs, school buildings and
businesses.

The press conference will be held at 504 Avenue E starting at 9:30 am. All speakers and organizational
leaders will be available for interviews. For more information regarding the press conference, please contact Mike
Lopez, media coordinator, at 210-907-6600 or via e-mail mlopez@lulac.org
