Ombudsman’s Corner Greetings G'town Families!!!

As the CMC stated, it is hard to believe it is December! We have had a long, successful year in our command; our families and
sailors have stood strong through it all. In preparing for the upcoming deployment, please put my number and email address in a
convenient place to insure that I am easily reachable in the event that I am needed. My job as your Ombudsman is to be your point
of contact with the command and to provide you with any resources you may need to make your lives easier. I am always willing
to give the benefit of my knowledge to our families and if I don't know the answer to a question, I WILL FIND IT! Keep your eye
on the Ombudsman Facebook page for upcoming events, information, and deployment hints/tips to make things easier. Please
remember to take advantage of any opportunities to gather with other command family members and benefit from the support
that we can provide for each other. I also want to extend a warm welcome to our new GERMANTOWN families
and the new additions to the existing families. I ask that each and every one of you make them
welcome and share your knowledge and support with them. This will be the first
deployment for several of our families but trust me when I say, you can
make it through and YOU ARE NOT ALONE!!

Sincerely,
Tina M. Wright Command Care Line (619) 515-4826

MY FAVORITE RECIPE

For future issues, we would like this area to be used to put in favored recipes,
submitted by our families. This month, I will use my own favorite to start us off.

BUCKEYES
This is a no bake recipe that I use usually during the holidays. Easy to make, and fun for the
kiddos too. Mine always enjoyed rolling the balls.

1 small jar peanut butter (chunky or smooth depending on your preference)

1 8 oz. pkg cream cheese, softened
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
6 cups confectioners' sugar
4 cups semisweet chocolate chips (white, dark or milk)

Directions:

1. In a large bowl, mix together the peanut butter, cream cheese, vanilla and confectioners' sugar.
The dough will look dry. Roll into 1 inch balls and place on a waxed paper-lined cookie sheet.

2. Press a toothpick into the top of each ball (to be used later as the handle for dipping) and chill
in freezer until firm, about 30 minutes.

3.Melt chocolate chips in a double boiler or in a bowl set over a pan of barely simmering water.
Stir frequently until smooth.

4.Dip frozen peanut butter balls in chocolate holding onto the toothpick. Leave a small portion of
peanut butter showing at the top to make them look like Buckeyes. Put back on the cookie sheet
and refrigerate until serving.

HOLIDAY SAFETY
With the Holiday Season being upon us, a lot of us decorate by hanging lights, either on
trees or buildings. Taking this into consideration, it is important to be safe and smart
when using lights. Here are some safety tips to remember.
Extension Cord Safety Tips
Proper selection, use and maintenance of extension cords is critical to avoiding injuries
and fires. Following a few simple safety guidelines can prevent potentially dangerous
mistakes with extension cords this holiday season.
Safety Tips
u Extension cords are meant to provide a temporary solution and should not be
used as a long-term or permanent electrical circuit.
u Purchase cords from authorized retailers and check to see that they have been
approved by a nationally recognized testing laboratory.
u Select a cord that is long enough to meet your needs. Never attempt to extend
the length of an extension cord by connecting it with another extension cord.
u Never use a cord that feels hot or is damaged in any way. Touching even a single
exposed strand can result in an electric shock or burn.
u Make sure the extension cord you use is rated for the products to be plugged in
and is marked for either indoor or outdoor use.
u Examine extension cords before each use. Cracked, frayed, or otherwise
damaged cords should be replaced immediately.
u Unplug and safely store after every use. Store cords indoors to keep them
protected from damage caused by water and excessive heat.
u Do not place extension cords in high traffic areas, under carpets or across
walkways where they pose a potential tripping hazard.
u Do not allow extension cords to dangle from counters or tables, where someone
could accidentally pull them down or trip over them.
u Do not run extension cords through walls, or across doorways, ceilings or floors.
This may cause the cord to overheat, creating a serious fire hazard.
u Cover unused outlets on the extension cord to prevent children from making
contact with a live circuit.
Outdoor Safety Tips
u When working outdoors, use only weather-resistant, heavy gauge extension
cords marked “for outdoor use.” These cords have added safeguards designed to
withstand the outdoor environment.
u Keep all outdoor extension cords and light strands clear of snow and standing
water, and well protected from the elements.
u When using electricity outdoors, always plug extension cords into GFCI-
protected outlets. USS Germantown
