Message from the Editors
The last Bugle of the year! YAY! WE’RE SO EXC....sad. We’re very sad.
No, we really are sad. It’s been a fun year of Bugles and of getting to put them
together. And we get to end this year by beating ASU! Right, football team?
Not much else to say. You can submit to the Leaky Bugle, but they probably
won’t be published until next year.....
Special thanks to: All contributors for the year, Ashley Mason and Fast Copy
for printing the Bugles, Emilio Romero for cover design, and Amanda Tester
for taking the Bugles in to be printed.

Interview with an ASU Drummer
Interview conducted by Jose Hermosa
So if you haven’t seen the video of the ASU drummer that passes out during a live feed, do it! Look it up under “Tenor drummer
passes out” on Youtube. I actually know this guy and was able to get an exclusive interview with him. Enjoy!
Jose- Alright buddy, so I know what happened and you know what happened, but please share with my fellow POA members what
went on in this video?
Nick - Well I was a freshman and it was my first week of college, and also our first week of band camp as well. So it was my first Fri-
day night living by myself and in the college atmosphere. Even though I knew we had a rehearsal the next day at 8 a.m., my friends in
the band invited me out for a “get together” at a friend’s house. I had a lot of fun that night, but when I woke up at 7:59 a.m., I wasn’t
having such a great time. I then remembered my instructor saying “If there is ONE day you are not late this season... it is tomorrow,
because we are filming a live webcast for www.bandirectors.com, broadcasting a clinic on how to run a drumline. SO DON’T BE
LATE!” I then sprinted out of my dorm to rehearsal and jumped in just in time for the clinic to start.
I was a little “hazy” still from the previous night, and very “dehydrated”, and I felt “terrible”. And about 3 exercises into the clinic, I
KNEW I was going to pass out. So I waited for the next available moment to step out of the shot, which I knew would be right after
the dirty attack we usually played that early in the season. So we cut after the attack, and I put my sticks down on the tenors and
started to walk away out of the shot, knowing that I had about ten seconds until I was lights out. However, as I was walking away, I
noticed my sticks falling off of my drums. Not wanting to get scolded by the instructor for having my sticks fall all over the place in
the video, I regrettably went back to fix them, and about five seconds later, my knees buckled, and I toppled over my tenors like a rag
doll.
The next thing I remembered was opening my eyes and seeing the entire drumline and staff in a huddle staring down at my limp body.
After regaining my hearing and vision, I then noticed a couple paramedics and firefighters running towards me. They gave me some
fluids and helped me recover, but nothing they could give me could take away the extreme case of embarrassment I had after I passed
out over my drums in front of 1000+ band directors on a live webcast at ASU on how to run and manage a drumline. Yep... I was that
guy.
J- Do you ever watch this video for fun? If so, what do you think about when you watch it?
N - I actually watch it a lot if I am having a bad day or in a less than favorable mood. It definitely makes me laugh and realize that my
day could be far worse. At Blue Devils this summer my buddies watched it about 3 or 4 times a day on tour and thought it was funnier
every time they watch it, and couldn’t believe I was “that guy”.
J- Last but not least and be honest...Who do you think will win the game?
N - I think it’s easy to be good at football when you live in a place like Tucson :) Go Devils!
J- I’ll forgive you for that one. Thanks for answering my questions and good luck on getting your Handicap parking pass...aka ASU
diploma.....Bear Down!
N- Nice!
J- I know!

Meet the Director
Interview conducted by Rachel Bennett
The Leaky Bugle: How can you park wherever you want?
Rees: Well, I didn’t originally have that power to park in so many different locations. But then
it got to the point where it was kind of understood that I needed to be at different locations
around campus. I go back from the music building to the athletics pavillion, often at different
times of the day, and it is no longer consistent. It changes around a lot, and finally we were able
to qualify for the service permit pass. So the band office now has a couple that we can give out
to certain individuals. Parking on this campus is difficult, and we always have issues. During my
early years on campus, I got tickets all the time.
Rees: It is so unusual that the game is on a Thursday and a school day that we will not be able to
do the usual ASU vs. UA exhibition, and because of that we don’t have an available time slot to
do a joint music rehearsal like we usually do for this particular game. Because of these factors,
we probably won’t be doing a joint halftime performance. Instead, we are both sharing halftime,
and each school will get to have some part of halftime dedicated to their halftime show.

Billy the Band Geek
Editor’s Note: Billy the Band Geek is an article that used to run in the Bugle where embarrassing stories
would be told by POA members under the pseudonym Billy the Band Geek. This week, the Bugle was ap-
proached with such a story. Names have been changed to protect the innocent.
It was three years ago, the night before the ASU game. That year, the game was in Tempe, so we were leaving
Tucson on buses at around 7AM the next morning. A few of us rookies were hanging out in someone’s dorm
room when we decided, at 9PM, that we wanted to go to Walmart, despite the fact that it was raining and none
of us had cars.
“Never fear,” one member of our group who may or may not be drum major right now but who we’ll refer to as
Bob said. “I am from Tucson, so I know how Suntran works.” (Those may not have been his exact words, but
close enough).
The rest of us were a little afraid of having to call our section leader the next morning and tell her we weren’t
going to be at the ASU game because we had accidentally ended up in Mexico, but we really wanted to go to
Walmart, so we followed Bob to the bus stop and onto the bus.
We got to Walmart successfully and did our shopping, but then Bob had to go home, leaving us to try and get
home on our own. Needless to say, we were at this point legitimately terrified of ending up in Mexico.
It was still pouring rain as we waited at the bus stop for the right bus to come and take us back to campus. The
time that Bob said the bus would be there came and went, and there was still no bus. As we began to freak out a
little, someone noticed that across the street from us, stopped at the red light and waiting to turn left, was a blue
station wagon.
We all laughed until we recognized something, I don’t remember if it was the license plate or a bumper sticker
or something, on the back of the car that let us know that it was, in fact, Rees.
We kind of all stood there for a second or two. “Should we do something?” we wondered. Then the light turned
green.
“Hurry, Billy!” yelled someone from our group I’ll call Sally. “Give me your camera!” And Sally ripped the
camera out of my hand and ran down the sidewalk, taking picture after picture as Rees turned left. Unfortunate-
ly, the pictures have since been lost due to hard drive crashes and computer switches.
And yes, the bus did eventually come, and we made it back to campus successfully.

Bowl Game Scenarios/Game Preview
by Chelsea Cohen
We’ll know for sure where we’re going by the end of this weekend, but here’s a rundown of the possible sce-
narios that would get us to each bowl game. First, some background information. The Pac 10 has tie-ins with
six bowl games: the Rose Bowl, the Alamo Bowl, the Holiday Bowl, the Sun Bowl, the Las Vegas Bowl, and
the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl (yes, that name is correct). There are currently only three teams in the Pac 10
who are eligible for a bowl game (A team needs a 6-6 record to be bowl eligible): Oregon, Stanford, and us.
Although ASU currently has a 5-6 record and could get to 6-6 by beating us, they still aren’t eligible for a bowl
game because they played two FCS schools (the division below the one we’re in), and by NCAA rules, you can
only count one win against an FCS school toward bowl eligibility.
Washington State, UCLA, and California all finished with losing records. USC is ineligible for a bowl game-
because they’re cheaters who got caught. Washington can become bowl eligible if it beats Washington State
this weekend (a pretty good bet, although you never know). Oregon State can become bowl eligible if it beats
Oregon this weekend (not going to happen). So the end of the regular season will most likely see the Pac 10
with four bowl eligible teams: Oregon, Stanford, Washington, and Arizona. If Oregon beats Oregon State, they
are going to the National Championship.
Another possibility is that Auburn, currently #1 in the BCS rankings and Oregon’s likely National Champion-
ship opponent, loses to South Carolina this weekend. This could very well open the door for TCU (#3 BCS) to
slip into the National Championship. If this happens, the clause about the Rose Bowl having to take a non AQ
team is void because there’ll be a non AQ team in the National Championship. Then Stanford can go to the
Rose Bowl and we’ll still end up in the Alamo Bowl.
If Oregon loses but Stanford still manages to stay in the top 4, Oregon will go to the Rose Bowl and Stanford
to another BCS bowl, meaning we could still be in the Alamo Bowl.
The above all assume we beat ASU. However, if we lose to ASU and Washington State pulls an upset and beats
Washington, we’ll still go to the Alamo Bowl simply because there’s no one else available.
Fun story: Some projections have us in the Alamo Bowl...against Nebraska. Rematch?
8
Holiday Bowl (San Diego): How We Get There
However, the Holiday Bowl is still a possibility. If we lose to ASU, we end the season on a 4 game losing
streak. Bowl games don’t like that. It’s worthwhile to note that just because the Alamo Bowl is the second Pac
10 bowl doesn’t mean that the second place Pac 10 team goes there. It means the Alamo Bowl has the second
CHOICE of Pac 10 teams. If Washington is bowl eligible and we’ve just lost 4 games in a row, the Alamo
Bowl could pick them over us, even though we: a) have a better overall record and b) beat them by 30 points
with our backup quarterback. Then we’d end up in the Holiday Bowl, which would probably not be happy with
having us back, but they’d have to deal with it because they wouldn’t have another choice.
Also, if Oregon loses and Stanford drops out of the top 4, Oregon will go to the Rose Bowl, Stanford to the
Alamo Bowl, and then we could end up in the Holiday Bowl.
Game Preview
In the big picture, this game probably doesn’t matter that much. We’re still going to a legit bowl game - it’s
just that the only thing this game most likely decides is whether it’s the Alamo Bowl or the Holiday Bowl, and
I personally wouldn’t mind going to either place. But we all know that saying this game doesn’t matter that
much isn’t true. I mean, it’s ASU. We hate them. And I, for one, will be very upset to close out my years in
Arizona Stadium with a loss to ASU. But have no fear. We should win this one. Key word being “should.”
I think we’ve all noticed by now that our football team can be erratic at times. Sometimes we play really well
(like the last two minutes of the USC game), and sometimes we don’t (like the rest of the USC game). ASU’s
5-6 record is kind of deceiving, too. Two of their losses, to Wisconsin and USC, were only by a point. Wis-
consin is now the #5 team in the country. They also gave Oregon and Stanford two of their toughest tests this
season before eventually losing. The sucky thing for ASU is that losses are losses, and they’re not going to a
bowl game because two of those five wins were over NAU and Portland State, both FBS teams, and you can
only count one win over an FBS team toward bowl eligibility.
ASU’s backup quarterback, Brock Osweiler, will be starting on Thursday after starter Steven Threet was
knocked out of the UCLA game with a concussion last weekend. Osweiler came in and threw for 380 yards
and four touchdowns in ASU’s 55-34 win, though, so he can definitely play. However, Nick Foles threw for
448 yards and three touchdowns against the top team in the country last week, while UCLA is in the lower
rungs of the Pac 10. Quarterback advantage: us.
In the end, I think our football team will come out pumped up and ready to beat our hated neighbors from the
north, and our football team is very, very good when they want to be. So final score:
Arizona: 35
ASU: 27

Color Theory
by Monique Murietta
Oregon-Green and Yellow: Green=growth and prosperity, yellow=all the f---in flags the refs throw
against us. Plus we were playing, you know the #1 team. But I fell into a turkey coma in the middle of the
game, so you can blame me again.
ASU-ASU Maroon and ASU Gold: Why do schools do that? I don’t have paint tubes marked ASU Ma-
roon/Gold. Then again, I generally don’t want people to puke on my paintings...Maroon is a weird type
of red. It’s almost a brown. Not very captivating. And Ron Weasley hates maroon. Come on. Pairing it
with gold? That’s too too close on the wheel! I’m pretty sure all the other schools we’ve faced knew about
the importance of CONTRAST. Even when I did a portrait of a guy breathing fire, I made sure the back-
ground was filled with dark blues, purples and greens to act against all the crazy red/orange/yellow shz
happening on the figure. With ASU it’s like oh let me jump into this lava pit, but first I’ll ignite myself to
prepare. You need balance. OMG JUST LIKE IN MUSIC! Football too, I’d imagine. But anyway it’s be-
come second nature for me to pick opposing colors to keep things interesting, but apparently nobody
thought of that up in Tempe-oh wait! Nobody THINKS there. That explains it.
