Understanding
1) who these people are,
2) how they approach life and
3) how you can become/remain one,
may be the most important activity you can do for yourself and your career. Combine this
understanding with Quadrant Living and the network sciences’ emerging principles and you will
be dramatically more effective using significantly less effort.
In the publishing business any time a hard cover book sells over
50,000 copies during its entire life it is considered a best seller. I
put the Positive Deviant’s principles to work selling my new book
Missed Fortune 101 and I sold over 51,000 copies in the first
month! I did this without being an established author.

“Deviance”- a difference, departure or deviation from the norm. A normal distribution is a bell
curve; it has three sigma (S ) on each side of the mean average representing 99.8% of the
population. Deviants is often construed as negative, connoting unacceptable behavior, because
of the focus on the area outside the left half of the standard bell curve, or the -4S area. In
statistics this is a negative outlier.
“Positive Deviance”- a departure, difference, or deviation from the norm resulting in a positive
outcome. The focus of positive deviance is the area outside the right half of the standard bell
curve, or the +4S area. In statistics this is a positive outlier.
Throughout the world, there are a few “positive deviant” individuals whose uncommon
behaviors or practices enable them to outperform or find better solutions to pervasive problems,
even though they share the same resource base as their associates. They consistently identify and
exploit existing resources to provide unique solutions (Dynamic Value or DyVal).
To demonstrate the effectiveness of the Positive Deviant, Lee Brower, David Neenan and
Marshall Thurber (see attached resumes) have joined together and created a unique experiment
to test the hypothesis:
1. Network Dynamics
The structural change of the Internet requires a deep understanding how networks work and how
to optimize them. The latest network research proves that corporations and living organisms are
very similar. A full understanding of the rapidly evolving science of networks will dramatically
improve your ability to:
1. build a successful business and/or
2. exchange ideas and information (and thus influence public and political policy)
Those accepted into the Positive Deviants program will be trained in:
• The Strength of the Weak Tie
• Hierarchical Decentralization
• Bose-Einstein Condensate
• Small-World Networks
• Scale Free Structures: the Power Law
• Influencers
• Nodes, Clusters, and Hubs
• Phase Transitions
• SIR Analysis
• Preferential Attachment
Without a life purpose that is balanced, it is easy to get sidetracked. The outcome is usually
wandering and drifting.
An example of a balanced life purpose is: “to love, learn, return (give) and earn.” The order is
very important, love is first, learn is second, return (return, add value to others) is third and, as a
consequence, earning takes place. This balanced life purpose fits elegantly into The Empowered
Wealth Quadrants Model created by Lee Brower.
According to Lee Brower’s model, one must look at each quadrant in analyzing if one is “on
purpose.” First, is the activity in harmony with your Human Assets? These include your family,
your health, your character, your unique abilities, your heritage, your relationships, your ethics,
morals and values. Love in the above life purpose statement is located into this first quadrant.
According to Lee’s Quadrant Living model, money and financial success do not drive a
successful life by itself. Money is the outcome of the dynamic value (DyVal) you or your
business brings to humanity. Accountants and financial planners customarily focus here yet it is
actually the final outcome, not the driver of success.
Dr. W. Edwards Deming, the father of the world wide quality movement and considered by U.S.
News and World Report as one of the “Nine Hidden Points in History,” was invited to Ford
Motor Company when it was losing $1.5 billion a quarter. The
accountants came in and recommended that Ford make drastic
cuts in order to stop losses. Deming commented that if the
company followed the accountant’s advice, they should shut
the entire company down and then they would make a great
deal of money. Deming went on to tell them if Ford was to
survive it had to focus on creating the most value added
(DyVal) automobile possible. The first Ford Taurus was the
outcome of Deming’s DyVal focus. It became Ford’s best
selling car ever and saved the company from bankruptcy.
The Empowered Wealth Quadrant Living model asks that you review any strategic activity to
make sure that it earns a plus in all quadrants. If it doesn’t, you must work on the strategy until it
does. Failure to find a plus in all four quadrants means that the outcome (even when successful)
will not be optimally satisfying.
3. Execution
The winds and waves are always on the side of the ablest navigator.
Edward Gibbon (1737-1794)
18th Century British historian and the author
of The History of the Decline and Fall of the
Roman Empire.
The above Positive Deviant Principles work only if you execute. Almost all top performers
(executers) have two common elements:
• They have a passionate commitment to whatever they are doing (the higher the
over all good, the better).
• They had a coach/mentor who provided the initial structure to get them started
and this coach/mentor, over time, faded into the background as the top performer
became more successful.
In addition, each Positive Deviant will interact (online and by phone) using Empowered
Wealth’s unique Quadrant Coaching (“QC”) system. The QC system is designed to balance
strong centralized structure with local (individualized) decision making.

DAVID G. NEENAN
CEO & President
Experience David has over 30 years of experience in the construction industry. He purchased
Burton Builders’ company, a franchise of Butler Manufacturing, and renamed it The
Neenan Company in 1973. The company encountered a major setback in 1976 on a
project located in Casper, Wyoming. After this project, Neenan identified eight critical
business mistakes and realized he had made them, not others. He rebuilt the company
by eliminating hierarchal management and reorganizing it into a cooperative of diverse
disciplines called the Archistruction® process, a unique approach that eliminates cost
overruns, job hassles and extended schedules. This team approach to construction
management aligns the customer, company employees, outside consultants, and
subcontractors. Currently, The Neenan Company employs 165 people, and annual
volume for 2004 exceeded $85 million.
David Neenan is also an accomplished writer and has written articles on effective
management for several publications. Among them are The Colorado Springs Business
Journal, Colorado Green, Fort Collins Business World, and The Denver Business
Journal. His book, Evergreen, was published in late 1994.
