GREEN MOUNTAIN CHRISTMAS: Green Mountain

Christian Center announces plans for the Third Annual Green
Mountain Christmas on Dec. 17 and 18, 2010 at Green
Mountain Christian Center (GMCC), 440 Main St. Bennington,
Vermont. The plans include the Gift Room for Parents in Need,
gingerbread house decorating, Christmas music, cookies, cider,
hot cocoa, family movies and other Christmas tide activities.
The Toy Gift Room for parents in need is at the center of the
activities. Last year, The Spirit of Sharing re-directed its efforts
toward raising funds to help folks with food and fuel. The
Green Mountain Christmas will do its best again this year to fill
in the toy gap, but we will obviously need help. You can donate
a toy or cash to help stock the GIFT ROOM where parents in
need can select presents for their children ages 12 and under.
Thanks to the generosity of many in this community, Christmas
2009 was a huge success providing local parents with gifts for
their children. We were able to help over 200 parents with toys
for 500 children. We hope to increase that to 300 parents (750-
900 children). Donations can be brought to Green Mountain
Christian Center, 440 Main St. Bennington, VT, Mon. – Fri. 9
am – 4 pm (office in rear). Parents in need should call the
Green Mountain Christian Center office at 802-447-7224

MASTER GARDENER VOLUNTEER TRAINING
PROGRAM – 2011. The Cornell Cooperative Extension (CCE)
Master Gardener Volunteer Training Program in Warren County,
NY is now accepting applications for the program beginning in
January 2011. Space is limited, so please contact our office soon
and we will send the application to you. Information about the
program can be found on the CCE Warren County website at:
http://counties.cce.cornell.edu/warren. (You do not need to use
www. in the web address.) On the Warren County Cooperative
Extension website, select ‘Gardening & Landscape’ under
‘Program Areas:’ in the left-hand Menu column, then select
‘Master Gardener Volunteer Training Program Information.’ The
link to the Training Program information is under the heading,
‘Master Gardener Volunteers.’After enrolling in the course, you
are provided with a large binder of information and reference
material for the course that supplements the weekly presentations
from Cornell University faculty, Cooperative Extension staff,
and local experts on a wide range of horticultural topics. The
topics include: Basic Botany, Entomology, Soils, Home Lawn
Care, Vegetable and Fruit Gardening, Composting, Organic
Gardening, among others. Local regional training is held in Ballston
Spa on Mondays from late January to mid April. Upon completion
of the 12-week lecture series, volunteers receive a Cornell Soil pH
Test Kit that will be useful as you begin the real portion of the
training. Master Gardeners are relied upon to help answer the
volume of calls that County Extension offices handle during the
gardening season. Master Gardener volunteers also provide
gardening information to community groups, school children, and
the gardening public through lectures, pH soil clinics,
demonstration gardens, articles in a monthly newsletter, and garden
workshops. Master Gardeners are also provided with advanced
training and are encouraged to attend state and regional conferences
as well as Master Gardener sponsored garden tours. For more

HOMES FOR THE HOLIDAYS HOUSE TOUR. Bring your
friends and visit 8 distinguished Salem area homes decorated for
the holiday season. The Homes for the Holidays tour will begin
at the Courthouse Community Center on East Broadway in Salem
at 1 pm on Saturday, December 11. Each of the lovely homes on
the self-guided tour has local significance with a few of the homes
being over 200 years old. While at the CCC receiving your tour
map, you will be entertained by the Bluebillies country music
band. The beautifully blended voices of Mark and Mel Guarino
and their band will offer Christmas favorites. This live
performance has been generously donated in support of the CCC.
The proceeds from this event will support the many enrichment

lecture, food historian Peter G. Rose delves into the early history

Dutch in the 17th century, and again, transformed into Santa in

religion, the fine arts, and Dutch food ways to describe the
extraordinary story of Saint Nicholas’ generosity, which has had

CELEBRATION
FIREFIGHTER PARADEAND CELEBRATION HOOSICK FALLS Friday, December
10 as Hoosick Falls pays tribute to area fire departments with a lighted holiday parade
and community celebration. The Hoosick Area Youth Center & Community Coalition
(HAYC3) and its Youth Impact Team are organizing this Pride & Tradition Initiative.
TREELIGHTING The celebration begins at 5 p.m. in Wood Memorial Park on Main
Street with the lighting of the Village Christmas Tree in the gazebo. The community is
invited to join in the ceremony. PANCAKE DINNER Youth Center, 115 Church Street,
Hoosick Falls after the parade. There will be holiday activities for everyone and pancakes
will be served from 5-7 p.m. One price includes pancakes, coffee, hot chocolate and
juice. SANTA & THE LIGHTED PARADE at 6 p.m., the lighted holiday parade will
depart from the Youth Center. The parade will feature our community fire engines decked
out for the season, along with everyone’s favorite holiday figure, Santa Claus. The
community is invited to enter lighted floats and compete for the $100 first prize and the
$50 second prize. The parade will line up on Center Street and will turn right onto
Church Street, before traveling to the Main Street intersection. The parade will then
head down Main Street, passed Wood Park, turn left onto John Street, left onto Church
Street and return back at the Youth Center. Please call 518-686-9050 and leave a message
for Aelish Nealon or Beth Dillard if you intend to be part of the parade line-up. Participants
must be in place by 5:45 p.m. for entry judging and the parade will step off promptly at
6 p.m. After the parade, Santa will visit for awhile with the children of the community at
the Youth Center. He will have a little something for each child and parents are welcome
to photograph their child with the jolly old elf. MERCHANTS PARTICIPATING Several
merchants and restaurants in the downtown area have agreed to be part of this holiday
celebration and will be staying open late on December 10. Stop in at these businesses
and do a little holiday shopping. Anyone who spends at least $5 will be entered into a
drawing for one of three gift certificates (worth $50, $25 and $25 each). The certificates
will be good at any of the businesses participating in the December 10 celebration. The
raffle will only be available for entry on Friday, December 10 – so be sure to support the
local merchants who are staying open that night. Local eateries are also participating
and will be open for all to enjoy before, during and after the treelighting and parade.
During the next few weeks, firefighter theme holiday Dalmatians will be popping up in
storefronts throughout the Village. Take a stroll around town, visit a few stores and see
if you can SPOT all of them?

THE HUDSON RIVER SHAKESPEARE COMPANY will
be holding auditions for its winter production on Wednesday,
December 15, 2010 at 7:00 pm at the United Methodist Church,
227 Main Street, Hudson Falls. Parts are available for ages
fourteen and up. No previous experience or prepared material is
necessary however it is important to be on time. The show will
either be Henry IV, Part I or Coriolanus, depending on the
auditions. Andy Daly will direct. Rehearsals for this production
will be evenings Monday through Thursday, December 27 through
January 20, 2011. Not everyone will be called for every rehearsal.
There will be four performances January 21 and 22 at 8:00 PM
and two matinees on January 22 and 23 at 2:00 PM at the
