Both of the speeches that you read in Units 2 & 3 are examples of public speaking
(oratory) and demonstrate the use of rhetoric (the art of using language to
persuade). They are relatively short speeches, but provide examples of very powerful
use of spoken language.
Look again at these speeches. Write between 100 and 300 words in the
Discussion Forum to tell us how you think they are alike and how you think they
are different.
What audiences do you think Lincoln and Churchill were speaking to and how
do you think their speeches achieve this?

We are in front of two speeches coming from two important personalities, two
leaders of two great and powerful countries of the world. Lincoln comes from
America and Churchill from Great Britain.
SIMILARITIES
The two speeches were made because of war. In fact, Lincoln address was during
the civil war in America while Churchill one’s was during the World War 2.
The civil war is the worst war even happened in America and cause division of the
country. This war was a source of countless loss of lives and material destruction
for the American.
The Second World War was also a source of countless loss of lives and material
destruction for the British.
DIFFERENCES
• Lincoln address was simple and emphasized on freedom, liberty, and equality of
all the Americans.
• Lincoln address was made in order to pay homage to the victims of the civil war,
to dedicate a cemetery in Gettysburg;
• Churchill address was political and was read at the parliament;
• Churchill address happened during the World War 2 and can be conceived as a
tactic to win the war;
• Churchill address happened just after he became the Prime Minister and appear
as his program to win the war and to prepare the British to this.
Lincoln addressed himself directly to the people to advocate unity and to continue
to build the country. Churchill addressed himself directly to the parliament but
indirectly to the whole people. I think the achieved their goals because after the
end of the civil war the USA become united as ever and Churchill gain the support
of the parliament and maybe of the people for the war.
The two speeches are similar in that they both bring a message of hope and
victory to the audiences. They are designed to capture the attention of the
audience and bring a positive message to them as well as equip them with the
courage needed to overcome the upcoming challenges. The messages are both
targeted to the whole nation and not just a group of individuals.
One of the differences is that in Churchill’s speech, he indicates that he was not
the final decision maker; he still had to report his actions to a higher office. Lincoln

had to report to the people because with him true power belonged to the people
and thus anything could be achieved if the people were to put their minds to it.
Churchill’s speech does not give room for defeat and Lincoln’s speech also
encourages perseverance.
Both speeches were addressing the whole at war and they look it bringing hope
and a sense of courage to overcome any obstacles. In both cases, they use their
positions to bring across this message and this is achieved because of their
positions of influence.
These speeches have the same key words : Nation, Government, war, struggle,
men, task. Both Addresses show a similar verbal scheme: they start using the
past (Lincoln: ..our fathers brought…-Churchill: I receved from His Majesty..). then
they pass to the present and they end with the future (Lincoln: this Nations shall
have a new birth; Churchill: ..our cause will not be suffered to fail..). Both
speeches express an increasing pathos and they end in a glorious incitement of
hope in the future times.
The speech of Lincoln is different from the other, while Churchill also wrote the
reasons of his decisions; the Prime Minister shows carefully his plans and how he
will realize them. The address of Lincoln takes place in a Cemetery and he talks to
the people, all the people; he was convincing thanks to his genuine words.
Churchill talks to the House of Commons to an audience made of politicians. His
arguments revealed a deep knowledge of the matter and he wanted to say to the
audience what would expected them in the next times. He was looking for
awareness of the people, of the Nation. Both speeches were determined, strong
and pronounced, they said the reality as it was, they were sincere. For this
reason their words were impressed in the mind of their audience.
The both speeches from the two difference texts show some points which are
related to the use of rhetoric. Churchill said he trusted that his task will be
completed when the Parliament meets again. This is just the art of persuading
people when he wanted to success. Also, this sentence seems to motivate his
Parliament to join and find the solution of the war. “We are met here on a great

battlefield of the war”, he had a great emotional to persuade his people and the
families of the dead soldiers. Last point, “we here highly resolve that these dead
shall not have died in vain; that the nation shall have a new birth of freedom”
Lincoln added. This is an art of the great leaders around the world use to convince
their people when it is caused by suffering. Moreover, from his speech, Lincoln
was not only a great leader but also a great persuader. The audiences were the
Parliament of the House of Commons and the people of the dead soldiers. I think
both speeches of these great leaders achieved this because they both were
proficient in oratory, encourage and impulse.
