most stunning petroglyphs in New Mexico. Mesa Prieta
is a major geological basalt formation overlooking the
Rio Grande just north of San Juan Pueblo in northern
New Mexico. Along the mesa’s eastern slope is the Mesa
Prieta Petroglyph site, on private land and containing
more than 6,000 petroglyphs dating from Archaic
(5500 B.C.) to modern times. The site is famous for its
many shield figures, abundant flute-playing animals and
