Western Students Sound Off on the Advantages of a Diverse School

―Walled Lake Western High School is like a bag of Sour Patch Kids; each of them a different color, different taste,
different appearance. Yet they are all in the same package, and are all equally good‖—Nadia Berenjian

―The first advantage about going to a diverse high school is being able to understand different religions. Also, they
have different clubs where you can learn about different ethnicities and make new friends‖—Morgan Burke

―Diversity is the key to the development of society. Diversity has taught me to be more accepting more of who I am
and who others are‖—Kelly Fink

―Diversity is what brings all kinds of people from all around the world together. We adapt and learn from one an-
other‖—Janel Kishmish

―Without a diverse school and multi-cultural friends, I probably would have never known the gravity of prejudice
that [certain] words possess. . . or benefit from the amount of patience and overall tolerance required to understand
and interact with other races‖—Felicia Igbani

―Going to a diverse high school will help students be more accepting towards the differences between people‖—
Madeline Longville

―Every day I learn something new from someone, and hope that someone has learned something about me as well. I
am Persian, and my parents were born in Iran‖—Nadia Berenjian

―Students are able to learn how to manage in a multicultural and multiethnic environment‖—Mishelle Dimitrova

―To see how everyone looks completely different from one another whether it is their skin color, hair, race, or relig-
ion, and know that we all come together as one school is incredible‖—Noor Faraj

―The first reason why schooling within a diverse environment has an upper hand in training students is the challenge
that stepping outside of the box poses for students. Working within a racially familiar setting allows one to smoothly
carry out tasks, but ultimately poses no challenges to the students to learn and become accustom to new cultures, tra-
ditions, histories, and even languages from both foreign and domestic classmates who know from first-hand experi-
ence‖ –Felicia Igbani

―Sharing traditions makes each one of us view each other differently and makes Western a closer [knit] school‖—
Natalia Jarbou

―We should appreciate this opportunity to explore different races, religions and cultures. They can teach us so
much‖—Carly Eichler

Western Student Diversity Quotes Continued...

―Sometimes, [differences] may be hard to understand or relate to, but the beliefs of others help us better understand
ourselves. The new ideas we learn about can make us dig deeper into our own souls. We can better question who we
are, why we are that way, and whether it is the way we want to be‖—Jennifer Lim

―In one of my classes, I have a foreign exchange student from China. She is a very nice girl and has taught people in
class about her life back at her hometown. I think it is very interesting to have someone who lives in another country
come to our school and teach us about stuff‖—Nick Malles

―[Students in a diverse high school] can become citizens of more global consciousness, and I feel less ‗different‘
here‖—Clivia Wang

―Knowledge of various cultures and ideas from around the world will be advantageous to me in both my education
and my career‖—Joe Cancilla

―Learning about other people helps break down stereotypes and negative thoughts and feelings about others‖—Jalen
Cooper

―Having diverse schools brings people closer together by expanding our knowledge of different kinds of people and
helping the students understand different [cultures] and customs‖—Brandon Mazell

―The real world is harsh and full of faces you have never seen before. Western brings about its diversity to teach the
students how to treat people who might not be the same as them‖—Mishelle Dimitrova

―When I was little, I thought there were only Chaldean people in the world. My mind was wrapped around my own
culture. I find it very interesting that Western is so diverse. I have learned about many new cultures. [The advantages
are] learning not to discriminate or judge, and learning to be open-minded‖—Raneen Samona

―A school is a [microcosm] of society. The more diverse it is, the more civilized it could be‖—Clivia Wang

―A teacher cannot teach you how to consider others‘ opinions, but being surrounded by them provides [us] the
chance to absorb such knowledge‖—Josh Bez

―Working together can be challenging, but it adds another aspect to school that is beneficial to my education. It has
helped me realize I should keep an open mind, and learn that everyone is pretty much the same, but our differences
make the world more interesting‖—Jennifer Lim
