CONSECRATION OF THE CHURCH

30th ANNIVERSARY OF THE PARISH
PARISH LIFE
Holy Trinity parishioners were, at last, able to celebrate a great
feast, on November 7, 2010. After 30 years of dreaming, planning,
and building, and with a generous gift from the estate of the late
+Dr. Oleh and +Sophia Kudryk, which made it possible to pay off the
mortgage, the time came to consecrate the church!  Metropolitan
Stefan Soroka of the Philadelphia Archeparchy came, and together
with the pastor, Father Taras Lonchyna and two other priests: Rev.
Vasyl Syvinskyj, pastor in Baltimore, and Rev. Dr. Mark Morozovich,
professor at the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C.,
set out in a procession from the rectory to the church, with holy
relics. The cross-bearer was Ivan Kryvutsky, and the ripidia-bearers
were: Gary Villhauer and Andrew Lyszyk. The church banners were
carried by: Darka, Solomia, and Nina Nebesh, Darka and Hanusia
Blaszkiw, Ann Woroniak, Khrystia Hruszkewycz and Ruslana Kits.
The altar boys were: Orest and Oleh Pankiw, Levko Karmazyn, and
Dmytro Nebesh.
At the church door the Metropolitan was greeted with bread
and salt by the head of the Sts. Cyril & Methodius Brotherhood,
Danko Nebesh, the head of the Sisterhood of Our Lady of Pochaiv,
Iryna Yasinska Graves, and by the pastor. The Metropolitan began
the prayers before the doors to the church and blessed the
cornerstone. The cantors were Petro Krul and Myroslav Hnatyshyn,
together with supporting singers.
Entering the church, the officiating clergy came to the sanctuary
and, under the accompaniment of prayers, began the rite of washing
the altar: first with water and soap, then with wine, after that with
rose water mixed with aromatic spikenard. The Metropolitan anointed
the altar with holy chrism, then the altar was covered with linen and
embroidered cloths, which the Metropolitan sprinkled with holy water.
Then the Antimension with the sacred relics was placed on th e
altar, followed by the tabernacle, the Gospel Book, and the hand-
held cross. The Metropolitan lighted a candle and placed it on the
“honorary chair” (the bishop’s throne).  After that he took the censer
and censed the altar, the sanctuary, the iconostas, the entire church
and all the people. Father Mark sprinkled the entire church, inside
and outside, with holy water and Fr. Taras anointed the door lintels
with the sign of the cross using holy chrism. Then Metropolitan Stefan
blessed the iconostas, which was re-fashioned from the church of
St. Nicholas in Mahony City, Pa.
There followed a Pontifical Divine Liturgy, with a beautiful
sermon by Metropolitan Stefan.
The women’s choir, conducted by panimatka Jaroslava (Lialia)
Lonchyna, movingly sang two songs, composed by her: “We who
mystically represent the Cherubim” and “Holy, holy, holy”.
Holy Communion was distributed and the service ended with
the polychronion (mnohaya lita) intoned by the Metropolitan. Present
at the Liturgy was a representative of the Embassy of Ukraine, Vasyl
Zvarych. Finally there was a joint photograph of the officiating clergy
in front of the iconostas, and then outside with all parishioners.
This unforgettable celebration continued at a festive banquet
with the participation of Catholic and Orthodox clergy, the
Ambassador of Ukraine, Dr. Oleksandr Motsyk with spouse Natalia,
with representatives of the Washington community, and numerous
parishioners and guests.
PARISH LIFE
The banquet took place in the beautiful hall of
our good-neighbor Orthodox parish of St. Andrew,
where the pastor is Rev. Volodymyr Steliak with
panimatka Marta. The banquet Master of Ceremonies
was Roman Yasinsky, who asked that the deceased
of the parish be honored with a one-minute of silence.
The program began with a performance by the
children and young people. Noah’s Ark was depicted,
which prefigures the church, and in which the faithful
find salvation. The children sang five songs written
by panimatka Jaroslava (Lialia) Lonchyna. The Ark
was built by Ivan Kryvutsky, and decorated with
animals by artist Darya Bilyk Villhauer. At the end,
the Ark was transformed into a church, and four large
icons were lowered, which represented an iconostas.
Iconographer Svitozar Nenyuk did beautiful work in
depicting on canvas the “namisni” icons of Christ and
of Mary, the icon of the church of the Holy Trinity, and
of the beloved saint, St. Nicholas.
Metropolitan Stefan greeted everyone and
blessed the food. The banquet followed.
The head table was introduced, where there were
seated three pioneers of the parish and long-time
members of the church council: Mykola Stawnychy,
Petro Krul, and Ihor Gawdiak. The Ambassador of
Ukraine, Dr. Oleksandr Motsyk greeted the audience
with a wonderful address. The main speakers were,
in Ukrainian, Iryna Yasinska Graves, and in English,
Anna Woroniak.
Video interviews with parishioners were shown,
prepared professionally by: Adrian Karmazyn,
Alexander Pikas, and David Humphrey. Then there
was a showing of slides prepared by Mark and
Christine Pikas, with background music from a
recording of the spiritual music of Roman Hurko.
The closing remarks were spoken by the
Reverend Pastor Taras Lonchyna, who said that the
Lord loves banquets, because He Himself fed five
thousand people, and He continues to feed us with
His spiritual banquet in the Church. Rev. Volodymyr
Steliak concluded the banquet with a prayer, and
Metropolitan Stefan blessed all present.
OUR PRIESTLY FAMILIES

Galysh (Galysh family). The next presentations will be in this order:

Rev. Osyp Galysh (1909–1967)

Father Osyp Galysh was born on March 31, 1909, in Zolochiv,
where his father, Ivan Galysh, was a non-commissioned officer in an
Ulan regiment in the Austrian army. His mother, Antonina, was from
the Kotelnytskiy family.
He attended a public gymnasium, which he completed in 1930.
That same year he was arrested by the Polish police for civic activity. He found himself in prison in
Ternopil, later in Lviv. He was freed on September 30, 1930. Because on October 1 he was to report for
duty at a military school, he went directly from jail into the army. After finishing his military service he
returned to Zolochiv and then enrolled in the Theological Academy in Lviv, which he completed in 1936.
He married Eugenia Semenyna, daughter of Maksym and Anna Semenyna (nйe Melnychaiko), on
July 30, 1936. They had three sons: Ivan, Roman, and Taras.
Osyp Galysh was ordained to the priesthood on December 12, 1937 by the Lviv auxiliary bishop
Ivan Buchko. After this he was assistant pastor in Bezbrudy and in Kutkor, and eventually became
pastor in Bezbrudy, in Zolochiv county. He also engaged in civic activities, serving as a member of the
board of a “Prosvita” branch, on the board of directors of “Ukrain-Bank”, and in “Ridna Shkola”.
In 1939 he was arrested again and sent to the concentration camp at Bereza Kartuska. He returned
to his parish in Bezbrudy, where he continued ministering during the Bolshevik occupation.
During the German occupation he became pastor in Ozerianka and in Kutkor. Before the new
Bolshevik occupation he moved west with his family, through Slovakia, and then to Vienna. From there
the family fled again, on foot, to Scherding, Austria (1945-1948).
From 1948 to 1949 they were in the DP camp in Munich, Germany. Arriving in the United States in
1949, he ministered for a short time in the Church of St. Nicholas in Muskegon Heights, Michigan. On
October 15, 1949 he became pastor of the Church of the Archangel Michael in Woonsocket, Rhode
Island, where he ministered for 18 years. Under the energetic leadership of Father Osyp the church
mortgage was paid off, and an expansion of the parish began. The church building was renovated and
embellished with works of art by two Ukrainian artists. The painter Sviatoslav Hordynsky painted pictures
and wall ornaments in the old Ukrainian style, and created and installed stained-glass windows, and
woodcarver Serhiy Lytvynenko did carvings for the iconostas and the tabernacle. The church renovation
project was completed in time for the commemoration of the Golden Anniversary of the parish in 1958.
Father Osyp was actively engaged in spreading an understanding of the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic
rite in the Roman Catholic community. He celebrated Liturgies in the local high school and at the seminary,
and also explained our rite in local parishes and organizations.
Father Osyp died unexpectedly of a heart attack on February 7, 1967, and was laid to rest at the
Ukrainian Catholic Holy Ghost cemetery in Hamptonburgh, New York. Decades later his wife was buried
next to him.

BIBLICAL STUDIES FOR WOMEN:

ABOUT PEACE IN THE NEW TESTAMENT
under the guidance of panimatka Lialia Lonchyna
Luke: 1:28 “Schlomlech Mariam”
1:79 prophecy of Zechariah–” to guide our feet into the path of peace.”
2:14 about what were the angels singing?
2:29 Simeon
7:50 “Go in peace”
24:36 “Peace be with you!”

Metropolitan Stefan Soroka said: “In the Old Testament it was as if one had to earn or merit peace. In the New
Testament it is a gift.” Perhaps God will first give peace, and then the soul will seek forgiveness?

Mark: 4:39 peace and storm

9:50 salt and peace

Matthew: 10:34 “I have come to bring not peace…” What?!

John: 14:27 “Peace I leave with you…”

16:33 “…so that you might have peace in me”
20:19, 21, 26 “Peace be with you!”

Matthew: 5:9 “Blessed are the peacemakers…”

11:28-31 “Come to me…”

Luke: 10:41 “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and worried about many things…”

St. Paul: Philippians: 4:4-7* “Have no anxiety at all…”* and “the peace of God…”*
Colossians: 3:15 “Peace of Christ”.

Does Christ’s peace reign in our hearts?
