    HSE Myth of the Month

    The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) have been running the 'Myth of the
    Month' for four years to highlight and put right common misconceptions about
    health and safety and the role of the HSE. This feature is now coming to an
    end - the HSE have released a final myth of the month, which is 'health and
    safety has gone mad'.

    Over the years, stories that were created or exaggerated by the media
    included "the banning of conkers, firemen's poles and park benches" also
    stories about "excessive safety signs...onerous risk assessments and claims
    that kids need to be wrapped in cotton wool".

    With its Myth of the Month, the HSE has tried to put the record straight that it
    offers "advice setting out the sensible and proportionate steps we can all take
    to deal with workplace risks properly".

    Single EU health and safety qualification

    New plans to develop a single European qualification and training framework


    for health and safety professionals, were revealed at a conference in Brussels
    recently.

    ENSHPO (European Network of Safety and Health Professional


    Organisations) Chairman, Giancarlo Bianchi, said: “Professionals who
    possess the qualification standard will demonstrate to employers that they
    have the professional skills, knowledge and experience to conduct their job
    within any country in the EU."

    Plumber sentenced for carrying out illegal gas work

    Tony MacTaggart (who also trades as TJM Heating and Plumbing) has been
    sentenced for putting people at risk by illegally working on domestic gas
    appliances after lying to to homeowners about being registered with Gas
    Safe, the compulsory registration scheme for gas engineers.
