FONDS DE JOINTS SIKA ®

Special devices for application of sealants

Description
FONDS DE JOINTS SIKA are enclosed-cell polyethylene foam sections.
They are sold as light grey strips of circular cross-section.

General characteristics
Owing to their composition FONDS DE JOINTS SIKA have
a first-rate resistance to the action of most solvents and chemicals,
a very low water absorption:
- after 24 hours’ immersion: about 0,5 % (by volume)
- after 48 days’ immersion: about 4 % (by volume)
- no adhesion on SIKA sealants.

Ph and Ch (mechanical) characteristics

Density: about 0,032.
In-service stability: from – 50°C to + 70°C.

Application
FONDS DE JOINTS SIKA are used to delineate the depth of a joint before covering it with
a sealant.
They meet the requirements of SNJF’s trade recommendations that stipulate that “the
backing roll must have no chemical action on the sealant while allowing its free displacement.
It must withstand the pressures developed during the application”.
They can be used for traditional masonry work, heavy or lightweight prefabrication, curtain
walls, mirror-glass production, cold-cast soil joints.

Packaging
6-mm diameter: carton holding one 400-m coil
10-mm diameter: carton holding one 100-m coil
15-mm diameter: carton holding one 50-m coil
20-mm diameter: carton holding one 40- or 300-m coil
25-mm diameter: carton holding one 200-m coil
30-mm diameter: carton holding 72 strands 2.5 m long i.e. 180 m
40-mm diameter: carton holding 48 strands 2,5 m long i.e. 120 m

Storage and shelf-life

FONDS DE JOINTS SIKA must be stored in a dry, temperate room. This prevents them from
being modified in time.

Instructions
Choosing the diameter
For FONDS DE JOINTS SIKA to be used for placing sealant without being expelled by the
pressures developed during extrusion and tightening, their nominal diameter must exceed
the width of the joint to be covered by about 25 to 50 %.

Width of the joint to be packed Backing roll diameter

Below 5 mm Ø 6 mm
From 6 to 8 mm Ø 10 mm
From 9 to 12 mm Ø 15 mm
From 13 to 16 mm Ø 20 mm
From 17 to 20 mm Ø 25 mm
From 21 to 24 mm Ø 30 mm
From 25 to 32 mm Ø 40 mm

Placement
The placement takes place by applying a pressure on the section sides and pushing it down
to the depth determined by joint sizing. Refer to trade regulations or to the tables of width
vs. depth proportions in technical books for sealants.
Use a wooden gauge or a round-edge non-cutting tool so as not to damage the backing roll
as this might cause bubbles in the sealant.

Important considerations
Non-hazardous handling.
