Materials Required
Here are the cuts for the pattern. I like to pre-cut my fabric so that I don't have long lengths to
deal with.
1. Starting with the face fabric (#1), follow the numbers around the “log cabin” until you have
completely finished, using the materials list as your guide.
2. When completely done and you have ironed the block very well with a dry iron, trim away the
excess paper on the outside line, cutting away the 1/4” seam allowance. Then take out all the
paper, starting in the centre and working your way out to the edge.
3. Iron your piece of fusible interfacing to the wrong side of the block. (If you have extra, trim
away. Make sure the piece is trimmed to 7” square
4. Starting at one corner, cut through on the diagonal so that you now have two pieces.

It will look like this when it is cut......
5. Sew the 2 3/4” x 9” piece of hat fabric to the edge that has the face. Press
6. Using a plate approx. the size of a luncheon plate, cut away the paper pieced (log cabin) edge
so that you have a rounded edge. (My plate measures 8 1/2” across.)
7. Now make a cut around the edge using your plate as your guide. It will look like this when you
are done.

8. Lay the entire piece on your lining, right sides together. Sew around the bottom only of the
gnome..................the bottom is the rounded edge. Trim away all excess, hat area included.
9. Open up the gnome wrong sides still together and starting at the hat and matching the seams
sew down the entire side leaving an opening about 2” in length in the centre of the lining.
Make sure you do stitch over the seam. This opening will be for turning.

10. Sew the opening closed by hand. Push the lining inside the gnome.
11. Cut a 10” length of embroidery floss, thread through the op of the hat and tie. Mark the eyes
on the face.
12. Your gnome is now ready to hang
Make the other side in the same manner. You will have 2 gnomes ready for the tree.
