GAELSCOIL CHORAIN CELE- Youghal Senior Youth Group

BRATES 25 YEARS AS A PIO- cheque presentation to The Irish
NEERING INSTITUTION Guide Dogs For The Blind
By Christy Parker

Gaelscoil Chorain will celebrate its silver anniversary with a night of

music and dancing at the Walter Raleigh Hotel on Saturday next
(14th November). Local band Phantom Sound will supply the
rhythm as parents past and present, along with former pupils re-unite
in an atmosphere certain to be fused not just with joy, but pride.
Gaelscoil Chorain’s inauguration in 1983 placed it firmly in the his-
tory books as it pioneered a new era in Gaelscoileanna in Ireland.
Apart from a few modhscoil that existed since the 50’s, mainstream
tuition through the native language was unheard of. "It provided the
first alternative to the long- established, Christian Brothers’ system at
the time," reflects Principal Sean O’Murchu.
The school began with 32 pupils in a six-room ex-technical school
building off the main street. Enrolments mushroomed to over 250
and an extra room had to be acquired in the nearby community cen-
tre (and a pedestrian crossing installed between them). In 1997, the Amanda Hosford Mansfield, Jayne Knight and members of the Youghal Senior
school moved to its present premises in, the former CBS national Youth Group present a cheque of 508 to Breeda Phillips representing the The Irish
school, when that establishment merged with the Presentation Guide Dogs For The Blind, monies raised from the fun ’Stay Awake’ fundraiser held
Convent. by the group last July. The sponsored fundraiser involved the youths to stay awake

ten rooms. Further space is needed in truth but the Batt O’keefe cut-
backs aren’t going to accommodate that necessity in the near future.
The school has won numerous awards through the years, inclusive of
drama, dancing, singing, music and sport. It’s a small wonder that
Mr. O’Murchu, who has been in situ since day one, describes the
atmosphere at the school as "happy."
Children are forever synonymous with stories and as Kerry-born Mr.
O’Murchu reflects, there are many tales, amusing and endearing, to
be told regarding the Gaelscoil Chorain. Those are for another day’s
reading. It’s difficult however, not to mention one of the school’s
more intriguing ex-pupils, from the 1980’s, an era when foreign
nationalities were rarely found behind a desk in an Irish school. "A
lad of about nine enrolled," recalls Sean. "He was unusual in that his
father was German, which was his first language. His second lan-
guage was Polish, as was his mother’s nationality. He spoke fluent
French because the family had been living in France. Now he was
learning Irish and English in Youghal." John Joe O’Shea from The Irish Guide Dogs For The Blind accepts the cheque from

Perhaps the next generation of politicians will better respect the edu-
cation establishments that launched them to where they are.
None of which considerations will dissuade those attending Saturday
night’s celebration from enjoying the wonderful achievements of the
past 25 years -and looking forward to the next quarter century and

YOUGHAL CELEBRATES IT S ADULT LEARNERS

Fair City actor Tom Hopkins (aka Christy Phelan) and Brian
Crowley MEP were on hand to celebrate the achievements of adult
learners in Youghal at a special award ceremony on Friday 31
October. The event was held in Cumann na Daoine’s new premis-
es in Catherine Street (formerly The League of the Cross). Over 60
certificates were awarded in subjects ranging from computers,
personal development and family communications.
The Celebration of Adult Learners was organised by Youghal’s
Equality for All initiative which aims to promote equality through
improving people’s access to education, training and employment
opportunities. A special round of applause went to the 28 local
women who will graduate from UCC later this year with UCC
diplomas in Social Studies (the course was held in Youghal and
was part funded through Equality for All).

stage in Changing Ireland
Youghal volunteer Dolores Corcoran is featured in the latest edi-
tion of Changing Ireland?, the national Community Development
magazine. Dolores is a voluntary management committee member
of Cumann Na Daoine CDP and since her entry into the
Community Development Programme as a volunteer, she has
become a paid development worker with Dungarvan CDP. She
said that things have changed for better for the community since
Cumann Na Daoine CDP was established. We have very strong
women and men s groups. They outreach into the community in
Youghal and beyond.
It is great to see the growth in those people within their own
community. A disability action and awareness group was recently
set up in the CDP and they have been very active in challenging
Flag Bearers their needs and that of the town of Youghal in perceptions and of
people with disabilities. Our biggest news is we acquired our own
building and all the community in Youghal have full access.
She said she was motivated as a volunteer by the learning you get
from being involved, it continues to challenge me, not alone by
attending meetings where we have to sort out business, but it
challenges my own thought process and views. It gives you a look
at the bigger picture. Dolores credited two people in particular for
getting her to become a volunteer in her community, Flo Dineen
and Sr Maura. The top 4 issues in Ireland today, said Dolores, are
the down-turn in the economy, health service, drug and alcohol
misuse, and people being dishonest. The latest Changing Ireland
Youghal Pipe Band also highlights efforts to re-start Youghal Farmers Market.
The Moyross-based magazine which is available in Eason s, by
post and on the net (www.changingireland.ie) was established in
2001, is managed by a voluntary board and employs local youths
on an occasional basis to pack the magazine. It has, over the years,
highlighted community responses to suicide, antisocial behaviour,
rural isolation and it regularly provides solutions to supposedly
impossible social problems. Minister amon Cu v, whose
Department funds the magazine, launched the web and print ver-
sions of the landmark 25th edition in April saying: Changing
Ireland not only gives people working in community development
a voice, it also provides a central forum for the exchange of
knowledge, experience and ideas . The magazine is printed on
100% recycled paper. For more information about Cumann Na

YOUGHAL ROTARY CLUB class and to all the parent’s and grandparent’s who acted as baby-
sitters to the sunflowers while their children were in school or on
Youghal Rotary Club recently ran a highly successful "Tallest holidays. We Thank you for you support and hope we can count on
Sunflower Competition" among all the school children in the you to support other projects that you might see being run by
Youghal and surrounding catchment area. This began back in May Rotary. We need you to keep us going. We meet every Monday
with visits to the schools with sunflower seeds and telling the chil- night at 6-30pm in The Red Store. If you want to know more or
dren about some of the work that Rotary does around the world. want to come along please contact Secretary Dorothy Heaphy at
Rotary are almost totally responsible for the eradication of Polio 087-9889240.
in most countries that had Polio, funding the Polio Plus campaign
and the immunisation of all the children in Polio stricken coun-
tries. Today Polio exists in just 4 countries and Rotary continues
to keep working to eradicate it. We told the children about the
Jaipur Limb Project........a project again funded by Rotary and
helping the thousands of children who have lost limbs in landmine
accidents. Limbs for these children are very different to the limbs
a child here in Ireland would require for example, legs in particu-
lar.
The legs are made from a local timber, much less good-looking
and because the children in these countries ’squat’ to eat etc, they
have a different movement system then a limb manufactured for
use here in Ireland would have. Because the children outgrow the
legs so fast, the cheaper version but extremely functional leg is a
life saver to all the recipients. They become mobile again and live
a normal life and do not have a to rely on begging to survive.
Rotary have equipped a whole ship as a floating hospital that sails
around the African coast, performing operations such as Cataract
operations and cleft pallet operations and changing the lives of
people with such conditions. Many people have their sight
restored and can see again, can you imagine what that must be
like?...to have been blind and then to be able to see again? Many
blind from drinking contaminated water.
These were just an example of some of the charitable works that
Rotary undertake around the world and Youghal Rotary are proud
to be part of it. Our main purpose in running the sunflower com-
petition was to promote an awareness of Rotary in the Community
and to highlight the work done by Rotary around the world. We
think we achieved this. The poor and wet summer did not dampen
the enthusiasm of the Sunflower growers. The first prize was
1,000 to a charity nominated by the winner, second prize was
500 to a charity nominated by the winner and the 3rd prize was
250 to a charity of the winners choice.
All the children whose sunflowers were measured were invited
along to The Red Store on Monday evening November 3rd in the
company of parent’s and grandparent’s. All the children received
certificates and the tallest sunflower was grown by Emma Page
from Inch National school, with Donall O’Riain with the second
tallest and Julie Roche with third tallest and both of Gael Scoil
Coran. Everyone shared in lovely food and refreshments after-
wards. We express our most sincere thanks to Ithel and Mike
Mckenna of Blackwater Garden Centre for sponsoring the seeds
and we were delighted to have Ithel present on the night to see the
results for herself. Youghal Rotary Club are presenting Phil
Coulter in Concert on November 27th at 8pm in the GAA Hall,
Youghal. Tickets are 35.00 each from Cree’s Card Shop, Youghal
Pharmacy and Nevilles Drapery.
We will also have our Memorial Christmas Tree at Super-Valu
Youghal on Dec. 18th, 19th and 20th. A special chance to remem-
ber a loved one not with you at Christmas by writing their name
on a card and hanging the bow attached to it on the tree.
The names of all the children who received certificates were:
Adam Harrington, Kilcredan School, Heather Curley, Tristan

From Management and Staff last for several seasons. If you really can t begin to enter the joys
of Christmas without the smell of a real tree wafting around the
house, then pick a live tree.
Picking a tree
This couldn t be easier! Go to the nearest supplier and choose a
pretty tree. Before buying, it is always a good idea to measure up
to ensure that the tree fits in your pot or living space, that the tree s
in good health.
Choose your tree carefully
You should also decide if your tree will be in a cool area, or in a
warm centrally heated one. If you are likely to have it in a central-
ly heated house, I would advise you to buy one of the high needle
retention trees available. These trees are either Nordman fir,
Noble, Blue Spruce, or Frazer or White Firs. These will usually be
pre-cut, but for the best results will need to be cut again and stood
in water immediately.

INCH ROVERS TAKE EAST

CORK TITLE
In what was a very close fought encounter Inch Rovers J2 team
edged out Carrigtwohill on a score line of 2 - 6 to 1-8 on Saturday
Nov. 1st. Inch made the brighter start with scores from Sarah
Harrington, Siobhain Downing, Aideen Wa1sh and Leah Dorrian
but Carrigtwohill came back to level matters by half time. At the
restart Finola Neville scored a clinical goal for Inch when she
rounded the keeper and followed soon afterwards with a point
from a free. Carrig refused to lie down however and notched up 1
- 3 to take the lead in the closing stages. Inch then showed tremen-
dous character to get back up the field. They recycled the ball a
number of times in front of goal before Danielle 0’ Shea stepped
up and blasted the ball past the Carrig keeper. With the pressure
on Inch once more Yvonne Coleman was outstanding in goal and
the Inch backs led by their captain Michelle Kelly at fullback held
out for the six minutes of extra time to secure the victory. This was
a fantastic team performance considering that Inch had gone down
twice to Carrigtwohill earlier in the season. Team: Yvonne
Coleman, Mags Keohane, Michelle Kelly (Capt), Niamh T.

Conor Forde and Aaron Walsh. Diarmuid Clancy led the race off FORTHCOMING FIXTURES;
on a blistering pace followed by Fearghal Curtin in the leading East Cork Schools Cross Country - Tower Park, Thursday 13th
group. Both lads ran a thrilling race and put last year’s Munster November at 11.00am.
Champion Dean Crowley from Kerry under pressure as he tried to Co. Board Cross Country Training - Glenbower Wood, Killeagh,

Dean Crowley in the very final stretch but finished in a very good
3rd place. Diarmuid has already won his individual title in the
U/10s.
Fearghal won the Gold medal and Diarmuid took the bronze
medal. Conor Forde who is having a very good season and show-
ing tremendous improvement this year finsihed in a very strong
position in 51st place which was well up the large field. Aaron
Walsh who was running his very first cross country race did very
well under severe conditions to finish in 86th place and to com-
plete the scoring for the lads. The Club team finished in 5th posi-
tion out of a total of 14 teams. The scoring was very close
between the third and fifth teams. The lads only missed out on
bronze team medals by 12 points and qualification for the All Girls U/15 team - Lorraine Bernard, Ciara Broderick-farrell, Emma Hennessy,
Emma Flavin and Patricia Curtin
Irelands by 2 points. Cork came first in the inter-county section ;
Fearghal was the first scorer and Diarmuid was the second scorer
so both boys won Gold Munster inter-county medals. Conor
Forde was the twelfth athlete in from Cork and narrowly missed
out on qualifying to run for the Cork team in the Nationals by two
places.
GIRLS U/15
The Girls U/15 team had another marvellous day. The team
included Lorraine Bernard, Emma Hennessy, Emma Flavin, Ciara
Broderick-Farrell and Patricia Curtin. Lorraine Bernard led the
team home finishing in 13th position and missing out by one place
on an individual medal. Emma Hennessy ran very strongly to fin-
ish in 16th place and again Emma Flavin was in close pursuit in
17th place. Ciara Broderick-Farrelly ran well despite the fact that Girls U.11 Team - Niamh Bernard, Rachel Dunne, Emily O’Keefe, Fidelma Flavin
she was not feeling well during the race finishing in 41st place. and Jennifer Hennessy

The Youghal Disability Action Awareness Group has organised a
Disability Awareness Fortnight from the 10th to 24th November

School, Pobalscoil na Trionoide entered a poster competition to
highlight the difficulties facing the local disabled community, par-
ticularly parking space abuse by the public.
With the support of local businesses, the competition entrants’ and
winners’ posters will be displayed around the town for two weeks
to help make the public aware of its behaviour towards people
with disabilities.
