AIRCRAFT FAMILIARIZATION AIRBUS 320 OBJECTIVES This course is designed for Line Officers, Fire Fighters, and Emergeticy Response Personnel to review and familiarize themselves with emergency information pertaining to the Airbus 320 in accordance with Airbus Industries technical manuals. After attending this class personnel should be able to % Identify, locate, and describe the operation of emergency doors and over-wing exits on board an Airbus 320. + Identify, locate, and describe shutdown procedures for the interior systems found on an Airbus 320, > Identify, locate, and describe shutdown procedures for the exterior systems found on an Airbus 320. OVERHEAD 1 1. GENERAL INFORMATION AL RESCUE DIMENSIONS 1. Aircraft sits abnormally high off the ground 2 Average distance floor level to ground: Wheels retracted 7 feet 6 inches Wheels extended 11 feet 6 inches 3 Interior Fire Flows: 100% = 139 G.P._M., 75%=104 G-P.M., 50% = 69 GPM., 25%= 35 GPM. B. GENERAL AIRCRAFT DIMENSIONS 1. Aireraft Capacity: 150-176 maximum occupancy. ‘Wing Span - 112 feet; Fuselage Length = 123 feet. FUEL SYSTEM A. SYSTEM CAPACITY 1 Fuel tank capacity consists of 6,250 gallons of Jet-A fuel @ 41,875 pounds Critical flow = 512 gallons per minute. 3. Practical flow = 1,544 gallons per minute, B. SYSTEM CONFIGURATION 1 Two jet engines using Jet-A fuel. 2. A LOCATION OF CRITICAL COMPONENTS 1 2 3 4 5 APU. is located in the tail section. Access to the A.P.U. can be gained by opening the two access doors located in the bottom of the tail section. External shutdown is located on the belly of the fuselage, forward of the nose gear behind a 5 inch by 3 inch access penel door. Internal shutdown is located between the left and right ENG/FIRE buttons A shrouded A.P.U. fuel line runs between cabin floor and cargo area down the left side of the aircraft SHUTDOWN AND EXTINGUISHING PROCEDURES 1 2 External - access to the shutdown panel can be gained by opening the panel forward of the nose gear on the belly of the fuselage Lift the plastic cover and push the A.P.U. button to shut the unit down. (The on-board halon bottle is designed to discharge on its own, but proceed with operations regardless.) APU. air intake is located on the bottom of the tail section and can be used to discharge fire fighting agent into the unit. Internal - located center overhead console between the ENG/FIRE. buttons, Lift the flap, push and release the APU/FIRE button, This will shut down air and fuel to the A.P.U., as well as arm the extinguishing system Push the A.P.U. SQUIB/DISCH to discharge Halon 1301 into unit. SYSTEM IS EQUIPPED WITH AUTO-SHUT-DOWN, AUTO- DISCHARGE EXTINGUISHING SYSTEM WHICH MAY ACTIVATE IN THE EVENT OF AN OVER-HEAT/FIRE EMERGENCY. COCKPIT SHUTDOWN PROCEDURES A. ENGINE SHUTDOWN PUSH BUTTON PROCEDURES 1. Located between the pilot seats on center overhead console, numbered 1 and 2. 2. Lift flap, push and release the ENG/FIRE button, allowing button to pop out. This will shut down air, fuel, and hydraulics to the respective engine, as well as arm the extinguishing system. 3. Pushing SQUIB/DISCH button marked AGENT 1 will discharge {halon} agent around the engine; for more halon push SQUIB/DISCH button marked agent 2. B. _ INTERNAL A.P.U. SHUTDOWN PUSH BUTTON PROCEDURES 1. Internal button is located between the right and left ENG/FIRE shutdown buttons 2. Lift lap, push and release A.P.U. button. This shuts off air and fuel to the AP.U,, as well as arm the extinguishing system. 3. Pushing SQUIB/DISCH button discharges Halon 1301 into the A.P.U. C. BATTERY SHUTDOWN PROCEDURES 1. The Battery switches are located in the center of the overhead console just forward of the ENG/FIRE buttons. 2. Push both FAULT/OFF buttons to shut batteries off. 3. Batteries are located on the right hand side of the nose in a compartment below the cockpit window. 4, Batteries are equipped with quarter-turn quick disconnects. %& DISCONNECTING BATTERY POWER MAY RENDER FIRE EXTINGUISHING SYSTEMS INOPERATIVE, INSTRUCTOR'S NOTES Airbus 320 - 8 A -320 COCKPIT SHUTDOWN scent Airbus 320 - 9 Vv. ELECTRICAL SYSTEM A COMPONENTS AND LOCATION 1. Electrical system consists of two (2) nickel-cadmium batteries. 2. Both batteries are located in the electronics equipment compartment which is located on the forward right hand side of the fuselage. Access is gained through the compartment door located below the co-pilot’s window on the right hand side DISCONNECT PROCEDURES 1. Both batteries use a quarter-turn quick disconnect. 2. Also located on the right side of the aircraft is the avionics compartment which contains additional electrical equipment. IF BATTERIES ARE DISCONNECTED FIRE EXTINGUISHING AND SHUTDOWN SYSTEMS MAY NOT OPERATE. Cockpit oxygen bottle is located on the forward left hand side of the fuselage. Access is gained through the compartment door below the pilot's window on the left hand side of the aircraft Passenger oxygen system consists of oxygen generating machines located over seats. 3. Airbus 320 - 13 VII. EMERGENCY EGRESS SYSTEMS A. MAIN CABIN DOORS 1, Once placed in the ARMED mode, all main cabin doors are air actuated and will forcibly blow open if opened from the inside. If opened from the outside the main cabin doors will disarm, Main cabin doors are designed with a dual light warning system inside the cabin on the door: Red lighted square indicates cabin is pressurized White lighted square indicates cabin coor is being opened under emergency operations, These systems are used by the flight attendants, 4. Always place ladder to the aft of the cabin door as they open outwards and forwards 5. Whether inside or outside, all main cabin doors operate the same way we ® _ ARFF PERSONNEL SHOULD BE TRAINED TU ARM AND OPEN CABIN DOORS FROM INSIDE THE AIRCRAFT TO ALLOW FOR ALTERNATE EGRESS DURING INTERIOR OPERATIONS. B. OVER-WING EXITS 1, All Airbus 320's have two over-wing exits per side that use an escape slide which deploys from the side of the aircraft and unfolds toward the aft of the aircraft. 2. Escape slides deploy automatically when the over-wing exits are opened from either the inside or outside of the aircrafi C. COCKPIT EGRESS 1 Cockpit windows cannot be opened from the outside! 2. Cockpit windows can be opened from the inside by pushing the handle release button at the top of the handle while pulling the handle back. 3. B. _ ENGINE EXHAUST AREAS 1, Depending on power setting jet blast could extend over 1000 feet. C. A.P.U. EXHAUST AREAS D. OVERHEATED LANDING GEAR DANGER ZONES 1. ALWAYS approach landing gear from forward or aft when fighting a wheel fire as wheels and tires may explode 2. Wheels are equipped with fusible plugs designed to melt and deflate the tire when temperatures are excessive. 3. Use of dry chemical is preferred if tires are pressurized, but fog or foam are acceptable alternatives. Located betwen the pilot's seat on the overhead console. Lif flap, push and release the ENG/FIRE button. This shuts off the engine and arms the extinguishing system, Push either SQUIB/DISCH button to discharge Halon 1301 around the engine Utilize both SQUIB/DISH buttons |ATTERY SWITCHES AND BATTERY LOCATION(S) Battery switches are located in the center ofthe overhead console just torward of the ENG/FIRE buttons. Push both FAULT/OFF battery buttons to shut batteries off Batteries are located on the right hand side of the nose in @ compartment below the cockpit window. Quarter-turn quick disconnect knobs are provided OXYGEN SYSTEMS Oxygen bottle is located on the right hand side ofthe nose in a compartient below the cockpit window Bottle can be safetied by tuning knob clockwise Passengers relay on oxygen generating units Small First Aid type cylinders are found throughout the cabin. 4 EMERGENCY EGRESS 1 MAIN CABIN DOOR - All main doors, | left | right, and 2 left and 2 right, all operate in the same manner from cither inside or outside the aircraft. CABIN DOOR’S ESCAPE SLIDE DISARMS WHEN THE MAIN DOOR IS OPENED FROM THE OUTSIDE. Push flap in and grasp door operating handle. Lift up to its fully raised position while pulling on the door. The door is hinged to come away from the aircraft and slide forward. All doors are equipped with a two light warning system that can be viewed through the door's window from the outside When the RED LIGHT is illuminated, the cabin is pressurized and the door cannot be opened. When the door is ‘opened from the inside in the armed mode, the WHITE LIGHT will lluminate and an audible external alarm will sound, OVER-WING EXIT - Two over-wing exits can be found on each side of the aireraft. All exits are plug type and ‘opened by pushing inward, Push in on the flap at the top of the exit while pushing the exit inward. Once released. tum exit hatch and remove from aircraft. If opened from the INSIDE, a double lane escape slide will deploy from the side ofthe aircraft and extend toward the rear ofthe aircraft.
