Leading Causes of Mortality

Mortality refers to the number of deaths in a specific community or in a certain


population. It is the incidence of death in a certain population.

The table above shows the frequency and distribution of the Top 5 Leading
Causes of Mortality in Barangay Molocboloc, Alubijid Misamis Oriental as of April 2019.
A total of 35 deaths for the past five years were recorded from Purok 1 to Purok 7 based
on the survey made. The highest and leading cause of mortality is hypertension and
vehicular accident which comprises 20% of the total number of deaths, while the fifth
leading cause of mortality is cancer which comprises 8.5% of the total number of deaths
in Barangay Molocboloc for the past 5 years.

HYPERTENSION

Hypertension is the leading cause of mortality in Barangay Molocboloc, Alubijid


Misamis Oriental. A total of 7 deaths were recorded from Purok 1 to Purok 7 which
comprises 20 % of the total number of deaths for the past 5 years.

Hypertension also known as the silent killer


According to Institute of Health Metrics and evaluation, Hypertension has consistently
placed among the top 10 of Causes of Death and Causes of Disability as of 2017. This
is an increasingly alarming issue since there is an upward trend of Filipinos developing
the disease. Causes of developing high blood pressure are varied. The top causes are
increasing BMI, smoking and eating habits and physical inactivity. Furthermore, in a
study by Taira et al (2007), Filipinos consistently ranked the least likely to adhere to
their anti-hypertensive medication regimen. All these contribute to the booming numbers
of hypertension cases in the Philippines.

HEALTH IMPLICATION

As observed in the data given, hypertension is the second leading cause of


morbidity and is also the leading cause of mortality in the community of barangay
Molocboloc. Hypertension does not cause death immediately but prolonged
hypertension leads to a wide variety of diseases and when complications arise, death
may follow. According to a study entitled “An Effective Approach to High Blood Pressure
Control” by Go et al, the following suggestions were made in an effort to reduce the
prevalence and occurrence of high blood pressure. Among these, the most important
lifestyle modification is the reduction of body weight, constituting a projected decrease
of as much as 20 mmHg off your systolic blood pressure. Other factors include dietary
modifications, lowering the daily sodium intake, improvement of physical activity and
moderation of smoking and alcohol intake.
