Part One: Background Information

Child’s Pseudonym: Tuklus Manes -5 years old,

Family Member(s) Pseudonym(s): Halsey Manes-Foster Mom, Skay-kai Manes-2 year old sister

Description: Tuklus is a five year old, Suquamish Tribal Member. Both she and her younger
sister, Sky-Kai was sent by Tribal Child Welfare from Iowa two years ago to live with their older
second cousin, Halsey, after their biological mother lost custody of them. Since being placed
with their foster mother, they have begun to learn the Suquamish Tribe culture including their
native language of Lushootseed, the art of cedar and wool weaving, traditional song and dance
and beading. The pseudonyms I used are both Lushootseed words for different birds. Tuklus
means owl and Sky-Kai is bluejay.
I selected this family because the mother is involved in the community with integrating the
culture and revitalizing the language which was almost lost to the Suquamish people. The foster
mother, Halsey is still learning the language herself and is not fluent, but is excited to teach her
daughters the language.
