Puji bagi Allah, Handbook of Disertasi Menulis untuk Program Doktor Pascasarjana
Direktorat Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta akhirnya bisa diselesaikan. Buku panduan ini
adalah edisi revisi dari buku pegangan sebelumnya Doktor Program Menulis Disertasi ditulis pada
tahun 2009. Buku ini direvisi dalam rangka meningkatkan kualitas pendidikan, khususnya proses
dan hasil disertasi yang ditulis oleh mahasiswa Program Doktor di Universitas Muhammadiyah
Yogyakarta. Buku ini digunakan untuk memandu siswa terutama mereka yang akan menulis
disertasi dan karya ilmiah lainnya.
Selain itu, buku ini juga berguna bagi pengawas / promotor dalam mengawasi penulisan
disertasi. Buku panduan ini diharapkan dapat meningkatkan kualitas proses dan hasil, terutama
dalam disertasi menulis untuk Program Doktor di Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta.
Perbaikan buku ini mungkin dengan partisipasi berbagai pihak. Oleh karena itu, kami ingin
menyampaikan terima kasih kepada pihak-pihak terkait. Kritik dan umpan balik yang konstruktif

BAB I
PENDAHULUAN
A. Pengantar
Sebuah karya ilmiah yang dibuat oleh mahasiswa doktoral (S3) disebut disertasi ditulis
secara sistematis berdasarkan hasil penelitian. Berdasarkan sistem pendidikan program doktor
dari Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY), disertasi merupakan bagian dari
persyaratan untuk memperoleh gelar doktor. Sebuah disertasi mungkin ditulis setelah
menyelesaikan tugas kelas, melewati pemeriksaan yang komprehensif dan menerapkan proposal
penelitian.
Disertasi adalah karya ilmiah yang koheren yang terdiri dari pengenalan termasuk latar
belakang masalah, hipotesis, tujuan dan manfaat penelitian; tinjauan pustaka; metodologi dan
prosedur penelitian; hasil dan Diskusi; kesimpulan dan saran; dan daftar pustaka. Sebuah
disertasi harus (1) menemukan kemampuan calon doktor (promovendus) dalam membatasi
masalah, menganalisis, menafsirkan, dan mensintesis informasi; (2) mewakili pengetahuan
promovendus tentang literatur yang berhubungan dengan penelitian atau mengakui penelitian
sebelumnya sebagai dasar disertasi; (3) memperjelas metode dan prosedur yang digunakan
dalam penelitian; (4) menyajikan secara berurutan penelitian dan logis; dan (5) menunjukkan
kemampuan promovendus untuk membahas makna dari hasil yang diperoleh secara berurutan
dan terintegrasi.
Sebelum menulis disertasi, siswa harus membuat proposal disertasi (rencana penelitian)
yang menggambarkan masalah penelitian tentang latar belakang masalah, rumusan masalah,
tujuan penelitian dan manfaat, daftar pustaka, kerangka teori, metodologi, dan sistematis diskusi.
Setiap siswa yang mengambil program doktor (S3) di Pascasarjana Direktorat Universitas
Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta wajib menulis disertasi sebagai salah satu syarat untuk lulus dan

memperoleh gelar doktor. Agar siswa dapat menulis disertasi yang baik, berkualitas dan dapat
dipertanggungjawabkan secara akademis, buku pegangan penulisan disertasi harus ditulis. Buku
panduan ini berfungsi sebagai pedoman yang memerintah hal substantif dan teknis. Buku
panduan ini hanya mengatur ketentuan penting, sedangkan hal-hal rinci yang dikembangkan
oleh dosen dan mahasiswa, sesuai dengan proses penelitian dan pengawasan.
Buku pegangan penulisan disertasi dibuat untuk tujuan berikut:
1. Sebagai acuan dan pedoman bagi mahasiswa dalam menulis disertasi.
2. Sebagai pedoman bagi pengawas / promotor dalam mengarahkan menulis disertasi.

BAB II
DISERTASI PROPOSAL
Proposal Penelitian dapat diklasifikasikan dalam dua, penelitian kuantitatif dan kualitatif.

Hipotesis adalah pernyataan tentatif tentang korelasi (hubungan / kausalitas) antara
variabel. Dalam penelitian kuantitatif, hipotesis biasanya dinyatakan khususnya sub-bagian.
8. Metodologi
Bagian ini menguraikan paradigma / pendekatan / metode yang akan digunakan dalam
penelitian. Metode ini terdiri dari:
a. Perencanaan penelitian yang akan dipilih.
b. Prosedur sampling dan analisis unit.
c. Sumber dan teknik pengumpulan data dan instrumen penelitian.
d. Pengolahan data dan analisis termasuk validitas data sesuai dengan perencanaan yang
diusulkan penelitian.
8. Sistematis Diskusi
Bagian ini berisi flowchart penulisan disertasi menggunakan logika penulis atau
argumentasi untuk satu bagian dan bagian lainnya sebagai satu kesatuan yang utuh.
10. Diskusi Framework (outline)
Kerangka diskusi Tentatif (outline) dari disertasi disajikan. Dalam penulisan disertasi
akhir, garis besar dapat dikembangkan.
11. Bibliografi
Bagian ini berisi semua literatur yang digunakan dalam disertasi. Teknik penulisan
dapat ditemukan dalam teknik penulisan disertasi dalam buku ini.
12. Lampiran
Bagian ini berisi hal-hal yang relevan dengan proposal, seperti kuesioner, pedoman
wawancara, dan peta lokasi.

(empiris, teknis) tentang mengapa masalah ini dibawa ke dalam proposal penelitian dan
penting untuk belajar.
1. Rumusan Masalah
Penelitian dimulai dari pernyataan dari masalah yang muncul dari peneliti karena
“ketidaktahuan” tentang sebuah fenomena tertentu. Ini adalah salah satu pemicu mengapa
penelitian dilakukan. Sebagai contoh: faktor di balik peningkatan laju kejahatan dan
kenakalan remaja. Penelitian dapat berasal dari berbagai sumber: observasi, teks-teks dari
buku atau sumber lain seperti pertemuan ilmiah.
Masalah penelitian adalah pembenaran / alasan mengapa penelitian tertentu perlu
dilakukan. Pembenaran tergantung pada pentingnya masalah ini, sementara pentingnya
masalah dilihat dari beberapa aspek. Pertanyaan atau masalah penelitian yang khusus akan
lebih baik karena mereka memimpin kegiatan penelitian yang khusus juga.
2. Tujuan dan Manfaat penelitian
Bagian ini menyatakan tujuan penelitian secara khusus yang akan dicapai sehingga
rumusan tujuan dinyatakan dengan jelas dan singkat. Sebuah penelitian mungkin bertujuan
untuk mengeksplorasi, rumit, menjelaskan, dan membuktikan atau menerapkan fenomena
tertentu, konsep atau asumsi, atau untuk membuat prototipe tertentu.
Bagian ini juga menyajikan manfaat penelitian apakah secara teoritis atau praktis untuk
pihak terkait dengan upaya untuk memecahkan masalah penelitian. Manfaat teoritis
(akademis) adalah manfaat dari penelitian terhadap pengembangan ilmu pengetahuan,
sedangkan manfaat praktis adalah manfaat dari penelitian untuk komunitas tertentu.
3. Literatur
literatur tinjauan membahas teori / konsep hasil penelitian sebelumnya yang relevan
dengan studi / penelitian yang dilakukan. Tinjauan pustaka tidak hanya digunakan untuk
melihat beberapa literatur, tetapi untuk menunjukkan korelasi studi yang diusulkan dengan
literatur yang digunakan.
Pada bagian ini, dinyatakan bahwa masalah yang dibahas belum diteliti sebelumnya,
atau menjelaskan posisi penelitian dalam penelitian sebelumnya.
4. Kerangka teoritis
Bagian ini menyatakan kerangka konseptual yang dibuat oleh penulis tentang masalah
yang sedang dipelajari.
5. Metodologi

Bagian ini mengungkapkan pendekatan, metode pengumpulan data, dan analisis data
yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini.
6. Sistematis dan Diskusi Framework (Garis)
Bagian ini berisi aliran penulisan disertasi menggunakan logika penulis dan
argumentasi masing-masing bagian sebagai kesatuan yang terintegrasi. Disertasi konten
sistematis dan diskusi dinyatakan dalam garis besar.
7. Bibliografi
.Bibliography daftar pustaka yang digunakan / dirujuk dalam naskah. Pedoman untuk
menulis daftar pustaka dapat dilihat dalam bab penulisan disertasi teknik buku ini.

g. Tim Ulasan memberikan laporan tertulis dan lisan dari hasil review di seminar terbuka
proposal disertasi.
3. Disertasi Proposal Seminar
a. disertasi proposal yang memenuhi persyaratan yang diajukan ke disertasi seminar
proposal akan dinilai kelayakan mereka.
b. Kepala program studi membentuk tim penguji seminar untuk memeriksa proposal
disertasi yang terdiri dari ketua, sekretaris, dan dua pengulas / pemeriksa, dan juga
menetapkan jadwal seminar.
c. Dalam seminar proposal disertasi, kandidat doktor menyajikan disertasi mereka
menggunakan power point dalam 15 menit.
d. Setiap anggota tim penguji mengkaji kelayakan proposal disertasi dalam 30 menit.
e. Proposal disertasi yang memenuhi syarat (tanpa revisi) yang disahkan oleh ketua
program studi dan calon promotor / supervisor karena itu diusulkan.
f. Proposal disertasi yang memenuhi syarat (dengan revisi) direvisi dan disempurnakan
oleh kandidat doktor dalam waktu 1 (satu) bulan, kemudian disetujui oleh ketua program
studi dan kemudian promotor calon / supervisor diusulkan.
g. Proposal disertasi yang memenuhi syarat dikembalikan kepada kandidat doktor dan
mereka diwajibkan untuk kembali mengajukan proposal baru sesuai dengan prosedur di
atas.
4. Ketentuan promotor
a. calon Doktor yang proposalnya disetujui dapat mengusulkan dua promotor disertasi
tertulis melalui surat lamaran yang ditujukan kepada ketua program studi dengan
melampirkan 3 (tiga) salinan dari proposal disertasi yang telah beeen resmi.
b. Kepala program studi menentukan calon promotor penulisan disertasi pada pertimbangan
tim melalui sesi penyediaan calon promotor.
c. Promotor disertasi adalah 2 (dua) orang terdiri dari kepala promotor dan anggota
promotor;
d. Kepala promotor harus memiliki setidaknya posisi akademik sebagai seorang profesor,
dan anggota dari promotor harus memiliki setidaknya posisi akademik sebagai profesor;
e. Tim promotor terdiri dari dosen dari Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta dan di luar;
f. Promotors calon penulisan disertasi harus bersedia untuk memberikan konseling tertulis
untuk menulis disertasi.
g. Kepala program studi mengusulkan 2 (dua) calon promotor Direktur Program
Pascasarjana untuk penyediaan.

h. Setelah mendapatkan pemberian dari Direktur Program Pascasarjana, dua promotor
penulisan disertasi memberikan konseling untuk penulisan proposal, dan setuju untuk
menandatangani surat persetujuan proposal disertasi. Contoh format Halaman
persetujuan usulan tertutup dalam lampiran 1, halaman 25.

BAB III
DISERTASI
A. Disertasi Konten
Isi disertasi adalah sekitar antara 200-300 halaman. Disertasi ditulis secara sistematis yang
terdiri dari tiga bagian utama, yaitu sebelumnya bagian, bagian utama dan bagian akhir. The
Sistem penulisan disertasi dapat diklasifikasikan menjadi dua, yaitu disertasi yang didasarkan
pada penelitian kuantitatif dan disertai dengan hasil penelitian kualitatif.
1. Penelitian Kuantitatif
Disertasi untuk penelitian yang mengembangkan pernyataan / framework hipotetik dapat
disajikan dengan format sebagai berikut:
a. Mendahului Bagian
1) Judul
2) Judul disertasi terdiri dari stetement yang secara khusus mencerminkan isi penelitian yang
dilakukan (mencerminkan konsep dan konsep hubungan dari sympthoms / fenomena yang
dipelajari)
3) penutup halaman depan
The Front page sampul terdiri dari judul disertasi, logo UMY, penulis, pernyataan
bahwa disertasi adalah pemenuhan sebagai sebagian dari persyaratan untuk gelar doktor
(dokter), lembaga, kota, dan tahun. Penutup halaman depan adalah hard cover, coklat
(Sakura 34). Untuk contoh penutuphalaman depan, lihat lampiran 2, p. 26
4) Halaman
JudulHalaman judul berisi sama sebagai penutup halaman depan, tapi itu diketik di
kertas HVS putih. Contoh dari bagian ini adalah sama dengan cover halaman depan.

5) Halaman Pernyataan Orisinalitas
6) Halaman ini berisi pernyataan tertulis dari penulis disertasi ini, menyatakan bahwa
seluruh disertasi adalah / nya hasil penelitian sendiri dan belum pernah diajukan untuk
gelar akademik ( sarjana, pascasarjana dan / atau dokter di universitas atau lembaga lain
yang lebih tinggi di tempat lain). Disertasi adalah penulis ide murni, kerangka kerja dan
penelitian tanpa bantuan pihak lain, kecuali bimbingan dari tim pengawas atau tim
promotor. Dalam disertasi tidak akan berisi karya-karya atau argumen yang telah ditulis
atau diterbitkan oleh orang lain, kecuali orang-orang yang telah ditulis dengan jelas

sumber disebut. Halaman ini ditandatangani oleh penulis pada cap 6.000 Rp. Untuk

7) Halaman dari Promotor
8) PersetujuanHalaman dari promotor persetujuan berisi pernyataan dari promotor yang
disertasi telah diperiksa, diperbaiki dan disetujui oleh pengawas / promotor dan
memenuhi salah satu persyaratan pemeriksaan untuk gelar doktor dalam studi yang
relevan dengan masing-masing program studi.

13) Di halaman disertasi ratifikasi mengandung UMY logo, validasi, judul disertasi, nama

untuk gelar doktor, kota dan tanggal validasi, nama-nama tim penguji dan direktur
program pascasarjana dengan masing-masing tanda tangan mereka.

15) Abstrak
16) Abstrak adalah bagian dari disertasi yang mencerminkan seluruh isi dengan
mengungkapkan inti dari masalah penelitian, pendekatan yang digunakan atau kerangka
konseptual, metode penelitian, hasil penelitian dan kesimpulan. Naskah ditulis dalam
bahasa Indonesia, Arab dan Inggris di mana masing-masing dari mereka harus berisi tidak
lebih dari 500 kata, diketik dalam spasi tunggal (satu).
17) Transliteracy
18) Jika penulisan disertasi menggunakan transliteracy, maka pedoman transliterasi yang
dibutuhkan. Pilihan pedoman transliterasi diberikan kepada penulis disertasi asalkan
konsisten. Pedoman transliterasi yang dipilih antara lain adalah pedoman yang tercantum
dalam Joint Keputusan Menteri Menteri Agama dan Menteri Pendidikan dan Kebudayaan
Republik Indonesia Nomor: 1581 1987 dan Nomor: 0543b1U11987
19) Kata Pengantar
20) Bagian ini mengungkapkan masalah utama yang dipelajari. Selain itu juga
mengungkapkan hal-hal seperti; batas, mendukung ketika melakukan penelitian dan

menulis disertasi serta pernyataan terima kasih kepada berbagai pihak selama pelaksanaan
penelitian dan disertasi menulis,
21) Daftar Isi
22) Daftar isi bertujuan untuk memberikan gambaran keseluruhan dari isi disertasi dan
sebagai pedoman untuk pembaca yang ingin melihat secara langsung bab atau sub-bab
dan nomor halaman.
23) Daftar tabel (jika ada)
24) Jika ada beberapa meja tertutup dalam disertasi, maka daftar tabel yang dibutuhkan.
25) Daftar tokoh (jika ada)
26) Jika ada beberapa tokoh tertutup di disertasi, maka daftar tokoh yang dibutuhkan.

Dalam penelitian deduktif-hipotetis, tujuan penelitian secara umum adalah untuk
menjelaskan / mengukur korelasi (hubungan atau kausalitas) antara variabel-variabel
yang menjadi fokus penelitian.
d) Penelitian Kepraktisan atau Penelitian Manfaat
Ini mengungkapkan secara spesifik kepraktisan penelitian yang dapat dicapai dari:
aspek teoritis (ilmiah) dengan menyebutkan apa jenis kepraktisan teoritis yang dapat
dicapai dari masalah yang sedang dipelajari.
Aspek praktis (kegunaan) dengan menyebutkan apa jenis kepraktisan dapat dicapai
dari implementasi pengetahuan dihasilkan dari penelitian ini.
5) Kesimpulan
Bab ini negara pemahaman penulis tentang masalah yang sedang diteliti dalam
bentuk kesimpulan dan saran. Kesimpulan menyatakan temuan penelitian berdasarkan
hasil penelitian dan pembahasan, sementara saran menyatakan saran teoritis yang
berhubungan dengan apa yang dibutuhkan untuk dikaji lebih lanjut untuk
pengembangan ilmu dari lapangan ilmiah yang dipelajari, dan saran praktis yang
berhubungan dengan pernyataan dari pelaksanaan dari terkait ilmu pengetahuan.

Bagian akhir berisi sebagai berikut:

conducted research (reflects concept and concepts relations from sympthoms/phenomena

Title page contains the same with front page cover, but it is typed in white HVS paper.

36) In the ratification page of dissertation contains UMY logo, ratification, dissertation title,
writer's name, student number, program, dissertation as one of requirements to obtain
doctoral degree, city and date of validation, the names of examiners team and director of
graduate program with each of their signature.

8) Abstract
38) Abstract is part of dissertation which reflects the whole content by revealing the core of
research problem, the approach used or conceptual framework, research method, research
findings and conclusion. The manuscript is written in Indonesian, Arabic and English in
which each of it should contain no more than 500 words, typed with single space (one)
.
9) Transliteracy
39) If the writing of dissertation is using transliteracy, then transliteration guidelines is
needed. The choice of transliteration guidelines is given to the dissertation's writer as long
as it is consistent. Transliteration guidelines which is chosen among other is the
guidelines stated in Joint Ministerial Decree of the Minister of Religion and Education
and Culture Minister of Republic Indonesia Number: 1581 1987 and Number:
0543b1U11987

40) This section reveals main problems being studied. Besides, it also reveals things such as;
boundaries, supports when conducting the research and writing the dissertation as well as

statements of gratitude to many parties during the implementation of research and
dissertation writing.
b. Main Section
The main section of dissertation contains elements: Introduction, Research Result and
Discussion, and Conclusion and Suggestion chapters
1) Introduction
48) Introduction consists of research background, framework or problem identification,
objective and research practicality or benefit
.
a) Background
It reveals things that become the background of choosing research topic, including
the significance of choosing the research topic; the research can be gained from an
empirical phenomenon or a practical problem and/or theoretical problem. It reveals
and lays a research which is conducted into scientific mapping which becomes the

researcher concern; shows previous researches which have been conducted by the
writer and other researches which are relevant with the research that will be
conducted.
c) Research Objective
It states the objective of the research being conducted.
In the deductive-hypothetical research, the research goal generally is to
explain/measure correlations (association or causality) among variables which
become the focus of the study.
d) Research Practicality or Research Benefits
It expresses specifically the research practicality that can be achieved from:
theoretical aspect (scientific) by mentioning what kinds of theoretical practicality
that can be achieved from the problem being studied.
Practical aspect (usefulness) by mentioning what kinds of practicality can be
achieved from knowledge implementation resulted from this study.
f) Methodology
Methodology elaborates paradigm/approaches/methods used in the research. The
elaboration of research method includes procedure or data gathering technique, for
instance interview, observation, and document study, elaboration of data analysis,
and elaboration about how to keep the data validity/authenticity.

2) Result and Discussion
This chapter presents the research result and discussion. The result and discussion
can be presented in some chapters according to the needs. Regarding to it, the number
of chapters and title chapters is in accordance with the needs. The elaboration of result
and discussion can be presented in the chapter or separate sub-chapter or very chapter
or sub-chapter can also present the data and discussion according to the topic/main
problem chapter/sub-chapter. In presenting the result and discussion, the elaboration is
preceded by description about the location/setting/research objects which are relevant
with research problem. This analysis can be presented in a chapter or separate
sub-chapter.
If the result elaboration and discussion is presented in 1 (one) chapter, then
sub-chapter A elaborates the research result which is began with the discussion of
general description of research location, while the elaboration of the next discussion is
presented in sub-chapter B and so on.
If the elaboration of result and discussion is presented in more than 1 (one)
chapters, then chapter IV elaborated the research result which can be started with the
discussion of general description of research location, while the elaboration of the next
discussion is presented in chapter V and so on.
3) Conclusion
This chapter states the writer's comprehension about the problem being studied in
forms of conclusions and suggestions. The conclusion states the research findings based
on the research result and discussion, while the suggestion states theoretical suggestion
related to what is needed to be studied further for the scientific development from field

C. Promotors team/Supervisors
During dissertation writing, every doctoral candidate is guided and supervised by
promotors team/supervisors that consist of two people. Promotors are responsible academically
for the dissertation written by supervised doctoral candidate regarding the scientific validity and
format of writing. This academic responsibility is shown with promotors/supervisors' signatures
on the dissertation approval page.
Therefore, doctoral candidates should obtain approval from all promotors/supervisors to
go through the whole process of research planning, dissertation and examination. During the
process of dissertation writing and examination, some extent of arguments may arise among the
promotors/supervisors and external examiners.
D. Progress Report of Dissertation Writing
To monitor dissertation writing, doctoral candidates are obliged to make progress report
of the dissertation writing when re-registering every semester recognized by the promotors.
E. Dissertation Examinations
1. There are two kinds of examination:
a. Preliminary examination (closed)
b. Doctoral examination (open examination)
2. Preliminary examination (closed) is conducted in examiners session of preliminary
examination (closed) led by head of study program as the chairman of the session, and
secretary of study program as the secretary.
3. Doctoral examination (open examination) is conducted by examiners team consisting of a
chairman, a secretary, two promotors as well as examiners, and four members of examiner.

Open examination is led by the Director of Graduate Program as the chairman, and secretary
of graduate program as the secretary.
4. In dissertation examination, all examiners have the right to test students' capability in
defending their scientific work. However, it is inappropriate for the supervisors to question
the scientific validity of their students' work during the examination, because the work is the
result of their supervision. External examiners are competent to test students' capability as
well as to question the validity of students' work.
E. Dissertation examiners
1. Dissertation examiners should have a doctoral degree and an academic position at least as
an associate professor.
2. Examiners of preliminary examination (closed) is determined by the Director of Graduate
Program upon the recommendation of the head of study program.
3. Dissertation examiners in doctoral examination (open examination) are promotors and
examiners of preliminary examination (closed), and one examiner determined by the
Director of Graduate Program upon the recommendatio of head of study program.

C.Typing
1. The typing of proposal/ dissertation paper is using computer, which is regulated with the
following lay-out:
a. Top margin : 4 cm from the edge of the paper
b. Left margin : 4 cm from the edge of the paper
c. Bottom margin : 3 cm from the edge of the paper
d. Right margin : 3 cm from the edge of the paper
(The example of lay-out format of proposal/dissertation writing can be seen on appendix
10, p. 35)
2. The writing is only on one face of the paper, not to be typed back and forth
3. The font face used in proposal dissertation and dissertation is Times New Roman with the
following font size:
a. Font.16 size and bold for the title
b. Font.14 point in size and bold for the name of institution in the title
c. Font.12 point in size and bold for the writer's name on the title
d. Font.12 point in size for the content
e. Font .10 point in size and bold for the other writings on the title
f. Font.10 point in size for foot note
4. Italics is used to write books' title, journals 'name and othe r foreign terms which are not
standard in English
5. Symbols or signs which cannot be written using typing machine are written by hands using

6. Numerical which are more than ten are written using number, except at the beginning of a
sentence.
7. Denomination is stated using official acronym without a period placed behind it, for
example; m, gr, kg, km.
8. Chapter's title is written in capital and put symmetrically in the center, 4 cm from top edge.
9. Sub-chapter's title is written from left edge with capital letters on the beginning of each
word, except conjunctions and prepositions.
10. Sub-chapter's title is written from left edge with capital letters at the beginning of the words.
E. Abstract typing
1. The line spacing of abstract typing is single space.
2. The line spacing between the title of ABSTRACT and the first text of abstract is four-space.
3. The title ABSTRACT and the entire abstract text (in English) are written in italics, while
ABSTRAK and the entire abstract text (in Bahasa Indonesia) are typed with normal letter.
F. Numbering Conventions
1. Initial Section Page
a. The numbering of dissertation initial section, starting from inner title page (the page after
the cover) uses lower case Roman numerals.
b. The page number is written on the center of bottom edge (margin).

c. Title page and supervisor/promoter's approval page are without page number (the page
number does not appear), but is considered as page i and page ii.
2. The numbering of Chapter, Sub-Chapter and Paragraph
a. The numbering of chapter uses upper case Roman numerals (capital) on the center page
b. The numbering of sub-chapter uses capital letters, and is written on the left edge (eg A, B,
C, and so on).
c. The numbering of sub-chapter and subtopic uses Arabic number.
d. The numbering of other items which are not sub-chapters, if they are details of
sub-chapters uses Arabic numbers, and the next details use small case letter, and so on.
3. Numbering of Main Section
a. The numbering starts from CHAPTER I (INTRODUCTION) until the last CHAPTER
(CONCLUSION AND SUGGESTIONS) uses Arabic numerals (1, 2, 3, etc) and it is put
on the right edge (margin), three-space from the top edge (margin) of the text's first line on
that page and the last number of page number is in line with the right edge (margin) of the
text.
b. On every title chapter page, the page numbering starts from CHAPTER I
(INTRODUCTION) until the last CHAPTER (Conclusion and Suggestions) is typed on the
bottom edge (margin) precisely centered three-space from the bottom edge (margin) of the
text.

2. Tables and figures are put symmetrically.
3. Tables and figures are numbered with Arabic numerals.
4. Table's title with its number is put symmetrically above the tables and figures without a full
stop at the end.
5. The note about the table or figure is written on the same page as the table and figure.
J. Foot Note
1. The foot note is written in single space.
2. The foot note does not use the opere citato (op. cit.) a nd loco citato (loc. cit.) t erms. The
term ibidem (ibid) is still used. If the reference being referred to has been interspersed by
another reference then author's name, title of the article or book and page are written.
3. If the work cited is a translation, then the name of the translator is written after the title's
work.
4. Article's title in a journal or book anthology is written in between quotation marks, while
the journal's name and the title of anthology books are written in italics.
5. The writing of page number is of the intended page using p, ended with a full stop.
6. The writing of city, publisher, and year of publication are in parenthesis, with the details of
open parenthesis (( ) followed by city, colon (:), publisher, comma (,) , year of publication ,
and close parenthesis ( )). Comma (,) is put after the author's name, article or book's title,
and the publisher's identity. The example of footnote format can be seen on appendix 12, p.

K. Quotations
1. Source data of the referenced works or citations are written completely in the forms of foot
note which includes the name of the author, the title, city, publisher, year of publication and
the page of quotation. If the work is a translation then the name of the translator is written
after the book's title.
2. The quotation is written on its original language. The quotation which is more than three
lines are written single spaced, indented, like in the beginning of a paragraph.
3. The quotation of scriptures verse is written single spaced.
L. Bibliography
1. Bibliography is written in one space (single-spaced), double-space between entries.
2. Bibliography is written using the following sequence: the author's name, the title of the
work, city, publisher, year of publication.
3. The writing of name is from the last name (if the name is more than one word) and arranged
alphabetically.
4. The writing of al- and ibn (for Arabic name) as well as van for (Dutch name) is ignored in
alphabetical arrangement.
5. If the work cited is a translation then the name of the translator is written after the work,
preceded by the word “trans.”
6. The article's title or anthology book is written straight and between quotation marks for the
name of the journal and the title of anthology book is written in italics.
7. A comma (,) is written after the author's name, the title of the article or book, the translator's
name, and publisher. A colon (:) is written after the publisher's city or year before the year
of publication. While a period (.) is placed at the end of every entry.
