At Year Up, we believe that everyone in an organization plays a role in the academic and personal success of our youth.
Our high-support, high-expectation model incorporates adult learning theory and adolescent/youth development for post

Teachers will leave this session being (better) able to do the following:
1. Define the “word gap.”
2. Describe the different categories of vocabulary and levels of “knowing” a word.
3. Differentiate direct / explicit from indirect / implicit vocabulary instruction.
4. Choose appropriate words for effective, direct vocabulary instruction.

Participants will learn how the Intentional Read Aloud supports literacy instruction by connecting to targeted skills and
CLI: Intentional Read Aloud strategies. They learn how to activate prior knowledge, ask open-ended questions, and use graphic organizers to develop

For many of us, managing time is a challenge as we struggle to balance priorities, put out fires, and answer to
stakeholders all while still trying to find time to eat, sleep and attend to our personal needs. Throughout this session we

In July, we discussed the importance preparing students to read difficult texts with before-, during-, and after-reading
strategies. In September’s session, participants used a model that concentrated on setting a purpose for reading through
Planning Deeper Jimi Cannon, Comprehensive ELA Teachers, comprehension writing tasks, reading, discussing (using the accountable talk model), and taking notes that prepare

Comprehension Literacy Support grades 5 and up students to show their understanding through writing. In November, participants are asked to bring work from their own
practice that includes before-, during-, after-strategies, discourse models, and comprehension writing tasks for peer
reviewing. There will also be time for peer planning based on previous learning.

In this session, kindergarten and first grade teachers will continue to experience and reflect upon several strategies for
