Aim of the experiment:-

To find the resistance of the given wire using metrre bridge and hence determine specific
resistance of its material.
1. Apparatus Required:-
2. A metere bridge(slide wire bridge).
3. A galvanometer.
4. A resistance box and a resistance wire.
5. A joykey and a one way key.
6. A screw gauge and a metere scale.
7. A set square.
8. Connecting wires and a piece of sand paper.

Procedure:-
a) Draw the circuit diagram as shown in fig. 3.07 b and arrange the apparatus accordingly
to the arrangement diagram (fig. 3.08).
b) Connect the resistance wire whose resistance is to be determined in the right gap
between C and B. take care that no part of the wire forms a loop.
c) Connect resistance box of low range in the left hand gap between A and B.
d) Make all the other connections as shown in the circuit diagram.
e) Take out some resistance(say 2 ohm) from resistance box.
f) Touch the jockey gently first at left and right end of the bridge wire.
g) Note the deflection in the galvanometer. If galvanometer shows deflection in opposite
direction, the connection are correct. If the deflection is one side only, then there is some
fault in circuit.
h) Move the jockey gently along the wire from left to right till galvanometer gives no
direction. The point where the jockey is Tuching the wire is null point ‘p’ .
i) Choose an appropriate value of ‘r’ from the resistance box. Such there is no deflection in
the galvanometer where the jockey is nearly in the middle of the wire (i.e betwn 45cm to
55cm).
j) Note position of point 0 (with the help of set square) to know length AB=l.
k) Take at least 4 set of observation in the same way by changing the values of R in steps.
l) Record your observation as given in table 1.

Observation:-
Sl. Resistance from the resistance Length Length Unknown resistance
no AB=lcm BC=(100-l)
Box(ohm)
X= ohm

1 5 49.5 50.5 5.1

2 4 5.5 54.5 4.79
3 7 58 42 5.068
4 9 64 36 5.0625
5 10 68 32 4.706

Calculations:-
a) Calculation for x
From position of d1 find lcm and write in column of table.
b) Find length (100-l)cm and write in column.
c) Calculate X and write in column 5.
d) Mean=4.9453 ohm.

Results:-
a) The value of unknown resistance X=4.9453 ohm.
b) Precautions:-
c) The connection should be neat, clean and tight.
d) All the plugs in the resistance box should be tight.
e) Move the jockey gently over the bridge wire and donot rub it.
f) The plug in key shuld be inserted only when the observation are to be taken
g) Null point should be brought in 45cm to 55cm
h) The wire should not make loop.

Sources of errors
a) The instrument screws may be loose.
b) The plugs may not be clean.
c) The wire may not have uniform thickness.
