8 – PATHWAYS
We try to make it as easy as possible for students to move from one course to a more advanced level, either
within Edenz, or to another institution. Our Business Diplomas have formal, and generous, cross-credit
arrangements with several institutions, and our graduates have been granted credits at most Universities in
New Zealand, and some in Australia. The NZDipBus has wide recognition in New Zealand Universities and is
nationally recognised qualification that allows students to gain a broad range of general business skills and
knowledge (at Level 5) followed by an opportunity to specialise on career related options (at Level 6)
We will award the following Diplomas

9 – TESOL COURSES (TEACHING ENGLISH TO SPEAKERS OF OTHER LANGUAGES)

TESOL is an internationally recognised qualification, has been a key academic area of Edenz Colleges since
1994. Edenz proudly offer TESOL Certificates Level 4 and Diploma Level 7.

9.1 – Certificates in TESOL

We offer two options for certificates courses.

9.1.2 – Trinity Certificate

The Certificate in TESOL from Trinity London is an initial teaching training qualification. It is internationally
recognised by the British Council and by employers and authorities around the world.

What is the Entry Requirement to apply for this course?

Although a degree is an advantage, it is not essential. A high level of language skills is essential though (IELTS
7.5), and that is tested by us prior to acceptance on a Certificate course. Every candidate completes a pre-
interview English task. The minimum age for course entry is 18 years.

9.1.3 – NZQA Certificate

The Certificate in TESOL (NZQA Approved) is suitable to non-native speakers who do not have an English
proficiency level high enough to satisfy Trinity entry requirements. It is still a highly recognised qualification,
and will provide the trainee with the skills required to teach at an excellent standard in their own country.
This course can be either taken as a standalone course or in conjunction with General English Classes if these
are required. Much of the NZQA course follows closely alongside the Trinity syllabus and timetable, excepted
for the Trinity moderation given in the end of the course.

9.1.4 – Time Table for Trinity and NZQA Certificates

• Intensive 4wk: Input sessions start at 9am. There will be a short break half way through the morning and
a longer break for lunch. Intensive courses run each weekday. The teaching practice (TP) sessions begin about
3pm. The TP times may vary from course to course depending on rooms and TP student availability. As group
feedback from your observer can vary in length, you will have to be flexible about finishing times. The finishing
time when you are teaching could be approximately 6pm to 6.30pm.

• Semi Intensive 12wk: The first two weeks of this course are home study. On week third the onsite
component begins with sessions in the afternoon on three days during the week (Monday, Wednesday &
Friday) from 1.00pm – 6.30pm (approx finish), with some flexibility on the last day for moderation (there will be
two interviews of approximately 30 minutes duration).

9.2 – Diploma in TESOL

For Diploma, we also offer two options, the Trinity and NZQA Diplomas. Edenz Colleges were the first school
outside of Europe to be granted validation from Trinity College for the Revised Licentiate Diploma in TESOL, in
2003. Graduates of this course are highly sought after, by reputable schools all over the world. They are able
to take up Senior Teaching positions, or positions in Teacher Training or Educational Management.

• Better pay (typically $25-40/hr)
• Eligible for Permanent Residence with any job
• Lots of jobs NOW in ESOL teaching in Auckland
• Overseas job opportunities (China accepts non-native teachers)

9.2.1 – Trinity Diploma (start October and February)

The Diploma in TESOL Trinity London is a course in advanced communicative methodology skills for
experienced teachers, with at least two years’ full time teaching experience and is recognised by the British
Council as one of their preferred qualifications. The course may be completed in one year. A Certificate in
TESOL or equivalent is a pre-requisite.

What is the structure of this course?

Distance Learning - The course will be mostly delivered by "Moodle", a Virtual Learning Environment designed
to help educators deliver online courses. This is part of our Distance Learning program. The course has a two-
week face-to-face (f2f) session at the end of the online inputs, in Auckland from mid-November. According to
the start date chosen, the three assessed assignments will be completed either before or after the f2f phase.
The distance phase will be delivered by the Edenz Colleges diploma tutor, Tony Foster. He will post weekly
work packages on our Internet Moodle site, covering the three main course modules: Grammar & Lexis,
Phonetics & Phonology and Teaching & Learning. Candidates will in turn submit their work online for
responses from both the tutor and their peers. During the distance phase the trainees will have the
opportunity to 'chat' to other course members (via messaging, Skype or Moodle forums), exchange ideas and
provide support to one another. Input sessions will be user-friendly with a balance of input and problem-
solving and a wide range of stimuli (interactive audio-visual websites, online articles and prescribed texts).

Face to Face (on-site) - During the face-to-face phase we will arrange for in-house tutor observation and
assessment of the trainees teaching. Candidates working within easy reach of Auckland centre will be able to
undertake their assessed teaching at their own school, but where this is not possible Edenz will provide the TP
classes. They will also work with their tutors on all the areas as preparation for the Written Examination, the
Phonology Interview and Teaching Practice, observed by the Trinity Examiner at the end of the f2f session.

9.2.2 – NZQA Diploma (start October and February)

Much of the course follows closely alongside the Trinity Diploma syllabus and timetable, except for the Trinity
moderation given in the end of the Trinity course. It is a one year course in advanced Communicative English
Language Teaching. The successful Candidates will be awarded the level 7 ‘Diploma in TESOL’, approved by
New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA).. In addition to the on-site study and classroom teaching
practices, there are a number of assignments and a project.

What is the structure of this course?

Distance Learning and Face to Face are as same as Trinity Course

9.4 – Study/Work Visa

This Dip TESOL course currently qualifies overseas teachers to apply for a student work visa which allows
them to work up to 20 hours per week. It is expected that the Candidates continue to ‘hone’ their skills by
regular work, while studying. As current Immigration policy stands, graduates from this course are able to
apply for a one year working visa in order to apply for a permanent position.

10 – FILM COURSE
The New Zealand Film Academy offers aspiring film makers the opportunity to get practical industry training
from industry professionals. Our 6 and 18 week courses take place in Auckland - a world renowned location
for filmmaking. We pride ourselves on the practical approach NZFA takes to its courses and try to run the
academy as closely as we can to a production house, while staying within NZ Qualifications Authority
framework. We want you to learn by doing - rather than just sitting in a class room.

Successful applicants become team members with crews that script, shoot and produce interesting and
creative short films, under the guidance of tutors who have their own accomplished and ongoing careers
within the film industry.

6 Week Introduction
This course is a short introductory to film making. It is an intensive compressed full time study primarily based
on the first 6 weeks of the 18 week course. Weekends and after hours become a valuable asset and in most
cases a necessity.

The course structure provides the learning environment for students to take their first steps toward a career
in the screen arts. Students having completed this course, will have written, filmed and directed a music video
and 2.5 min short film. This is a course gives graduates a foundational path toward further training for a
career in the television and film industry.

18 Week Introduction
This is an intensive full time study on the film making process. The course duration is geared to give students
enough 'hands on time' to hone their practical and creative skills, providing the right environment for
students to explore and create highly entertaining, imaginative productions.

With the additional training modules on Small Business Economics and Producing Fundamentals as well as the
additional short film projects, it gives a more rounded learning experience than the 6 week course.

Students having completed this course, will have written, filmed and directed a music clip, two short film
narratives and a short film drama of up to 20 minutes. Students work in small production crews to ensure that
each individual gets the attention they need to produce a quality film for their show reel.
The 18 week course gives graduates the confidence to make an informed decision on a career path in the film
and television industry.

10 –ACCOMMODATION
We are able to help students with all kinds of accommodation. Please see below the most wanted options.

• Homestay
Starting with a Homestay allows you to adjust to the New Zealand way of life, familiarise yourself with
the transport systems and learn how to find good accommodation in the best location and at the best
price. Homestay also offers you a chance to practice your English, and gives you that extra care while
you settle into a new culture. All of our Home stays are checked and must pass a detailed evaluation
process.

• Student Accommodation (available only in Auckland)

This is a modern and spacious house, with many facilities for your comfort, 13 rooms (single, couple,
share), spacious and comfortable living room with Sky TV, Internet room, Play Station, 2 equipped
kitchens with freezer, microwave, oven, toaster, 5 showers, 6 toilets, table tennis room, backyard
with BBQ. The accommodation is near to the Newmarket shops, banks, supermarkets, bus routes and
only a short ride to the City Centre. All living costs such as electricity, gas, water, internet and Sky are
included. It is a great opportunity to meet new people from different parts of the world, experience
their cultures and habits, make new friends and improve your English language skills.

• Hostels
There are several hostels near and these ranges from $130-$200 per week. This price does not include
food. It is important to remember that while staying in a hostel offers more independence than a
Homestay, it requires students to look after themselves and be disciplined in their study and
attendance. This type of accommodation is recommended for more mature students.

• Flat & Apartment

Flats range from $130-$250 per person per week, and Apartments can range from $150-$500 per
week, depending on the location of the flat and the number of students sharing the cost. This price
does not include electricity, phone or food.
