Key Ingredients
Glucosamine - is a naturally occurring dietary amino sugar that serves in
the body as a building block to support the formation and maintenance
of joint cartilage and other connective tissues.
White Willow Bark - comes from the bark of the stately white willow
tree (Salix alba). The active ingredient in white willow is salicin, which
the body converts into salicylic acid. The salicylic acid in white willow
bark helps ease aches, pains and inflammation.
Vitamin C (Calcium ascorbate) - Source of buffered (non-acidic) vitamin
C. It is a calcium source and powerful antioxidant. Vitamin C is the salt
of ascorbic acid.
Vitamin E (d-Alpha Tocopherol Acetate) - Antioxidant source of
vitamin E, natural. Water-dispersible form of the antioxidant vitamin E.
Vitamin E is the collective term for four fat-soluble, natural vitamins
with very similar chemical structure: d-alpha, d-beta, d-gamma and d-
delta tocopherol. Of these, d-alpha tocopherol has the highest nutritional
activity. Vitamin E is perhaps the body's most important fat-soluble
antioxidant nutrient protecting cell membranes, where it prevents
oxidation of unsaturated fatty acids by trapping free radicals. Related to
its antioxidant properties, vitamin E is also important for normal
immune function.

Other Ingredients
Dextrose, white willow bark (18.7%), glucosamine sulfate and
glucosamine hyrdochloride (35% of glucosamine), vitamins, bulking
agents (microcrystalline cellulose, sodium carboxymethylcellulose), anti-
caking agents (stearic acid, magnesium stearate), tumeric root extract,
zinc gluconate, rutin, copper gluconate.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q . What is the ratio of the hydrochloride to sulfate, and why do we use
hydrochloride when sulfate is studied more?
A. The ratio between glucosamine hydrochloride and glucosamine
sulfate is actually 1:1. Thus, of the 1500 mg of daily glucosamine, 750
mg would be from the sulfate and 750 from hydrochloride.
We chose to use a 1:1 ratio in FlexCare for two reasons. First, the
mixture of glucosamine sulfate and hydrochloride may give a better
spectrum of absorption. Second, there are some safety issues with the
sulfate. Apparently there are bacteria that reside in the gut that can
transform sulfate into sulfite. Sulfite is a bowel irritant that causes
symptoms similar to those seen in colitis. This could become a
problem with someone taking 3g (double-dose) glucosamine sulfate
for a few months. Glucosamine hydrochloride does not have this
effect, and is easier on the bowels.
Q. What is the difference between FlexCare (EU) and Cartilage Formula
(US)?
A. Formulas vary per market based on the local regulatory environment.
Unfortunately, Boswellia is not allowed in Europe. Because of its
anti-inflammatory action it has been classified as a drug in many
countries. Therefore, we replaced Boswellia with white willow bark,
which as similar benefits. Boswellia does not help with the uptake of
glucosamine.
Q. What are the benefits of bioflavonoids in FlexCare
A. The bioflavonoids (quercetin and rutin) are included among several
antioxidants in FlexCare. Research has clearly demonstrated that
people with poor joint mobility often have an increased level of free
radicals. The bioflavonoids were chosen because they have been
shown to be involved in connective tissue protection, and have been
shown to help regenerate the antioxidant properties of vitamin E
and C.
Q. What is the manufacturing process of glucosamine?
A. In regards to purification and hydrolysis:
1) Purification: It consists of acid hydrolysis, water wash and alkali
hydrolysis. Acid used is generally HCL (hydro chloric acid). Typical
alkali is sodium hydroxide. Generally water used in such process is
deionised water which is potable grade or has been treated for
reduction of salts and microbial load in it.
2) Hydrolysis of Chitosan using HCL is a chemical process. On
completion of chemical process it is subjected to physical processes
like filtration, neutralisation to remove excess acid, drying and milling
to get required particle size.
