Bandara Internasional Kalamazoo-Battle Creek (IATA: AZO, ICAO: KAZO) adalah

The inspiration of an airport in Kalamazoo began in 1925. In May of 1926, the City of
Kalamazoo bought 383 acres of land near Portage and Kilgore Roads. Scheduled air
service began between Kalamazoo and Grand Rapids shortly thereafter, and the first
regular air mail service started in July, 1928. In February 1929, the field was licensed as
the first municipal airport in Michigan. It was named Lindbergh Field in honor of famous
aviator, Charles Lindbergh.

In 1958 a new terminal was constructed to replace the old building that had housed
passengers since the 1920’s. In 1961, an air traffic control tower and additional runways
were built. Year after year, the number of passengers using the facility and the number of
flights in and out of Kalamazoo continued to grow. The consistent growth necessitated a
terminal expansion in 1979 and the building increased from 12,000 to 30,000 square feet.

In 1982, the Core Council decided that the City of Kalamazoo should no longer bear the
full cost of operating the airport, and in 1984, the City transferred ownership to the
County of Kalamazoo. The County recognized the need to increase service at the
Kalamazoo County Airport. The terminal was completely renovated in 1989, with the
addition of a new concourse, an enlarged boarding area, a new baggage claim area, and a
ramp expansion. This expansive project doubled the size of the terminal, and passenger
traffic grew from 200,000 per year to over 500,000 per year by 1993. In 1994, passenger
volume dictated the need for a parking lot expansion, during which time, over 300 long-
term spaces were added.

Today, the Kalamazoo/Battle Creek International Airport is served by 4 major airlines


that fly hundreds of passengers each day to major hubs with worldwide connections. The
airport is self-sufficient and has a significant economic impact on Southwest Michigan.
The goal of the Kalamazoo/Battle Creek International Airport staff is to continue to
provide a variety of safe, reliable commercial air transportation services to our customers
and to adequately adapt and expand to meet their needs.

The Air Zoo — formerly known as the Kalamazoo Aviation History Museum — is
located just down the street from the Kalamazoo-Battle Creek International Airport and
only minutes from downtown Kalamazoo in Portage, Michigan. It is the first museum of
its kind in the world with its "museum-meets-indoor-amusement-park" theme. It boasts
many historical and rare aircraft, including the world's fastest air-breathing aircraft, the
SR-71B Blackbird. Many of its antique planes are airworthy.

S.P.A.D. WWI Fighter in the Kalamazoo Air Zoo

The Kalamazoo Aviation History Museum was founded in 1977 under the idea that it
would be: "Dedicated to preserving and displaying historical and military artifacts and to
serving as a research and educational facility for this country and abroad." The doors
opened on November 18, 1979 to great local acclaim, and the museum quickly developed
into the tenth-largest nongovernmental aviation museum in the United States.

In 1994 the Restoration Center was added, changing the museum's role from only
displaying to restoring and rebuilding old aircraft to proper working order. This helped
Kalamazoo to gain credibility and to be recognized as one of the country's premier
aviation attractions.

In early 1999, the moniker "Air Zoo" was adopted and as the leaders began plans for a
major reconstruction. On April 25, 2003, construction began on a new 120,000-square-
foot (11,000 m2) facility that would double its original size and boast vintage aircraft,
flight simulators, amusement rides, Smithsonian exhibitions, character actors, and a 4-D
theater, which combines 3-D filmmaking with special effects such as rocking chairs and
plumes of smoke simulating anti-aircraft fire. Bob Ellis, executive director for the Air
Zoo, spoke with reporters when the new facility opened in April 2004:

"The new Air Zoo doesn't just teach people about history, it surrounds them with it. There
will always be something new to see. Because of our partnership with the Smithsonian
Institution, the Air Zoo has access to over 142 million artifacts and an endless source of
world-famous traveling exhibitions."

The new building also holds a world record. The largest indoor mural greets visitors as
soon as they enter with a 25,000-square-foot (2,300 m2) tribute to the history of flight.
Creator and aviation artist Rick Herter named the mural "Century of Flight". Tony
Hendrick serves as the project's assistant artist and had this to say:
"I want people to walk inside the Air Zoo and escape to another place in time, the mural
helps them do that by making the physical walls seem to disappear."

Miriel Williams, sub-contracted by Mr. Herter, completed the 168-foot (51 m) "Night to
Day" mural located on the wall opposite "Century of Flight". This unique mural,
positioned between "Century of Flight" and a computer generated background on an
adjacent wall, adds the finishing touch, and creates a stunning mystical effect.

Stuart Claxton, research manager for Guinness, was on hand to officially induct the mural
into the Guinness Book of World Records, saying:

"Guinness World Records is all about celebrating ordinary, everyday people who do
extraordinary things. Today we congratulate the Air Zoo and artists Rick Herter and Tony
Hendrick for developing a mural that is not only breathtaking, but it also has set a
Guinness World Record as the largest indoor mural."

In June 2007, the Michigan Space & Science Center opened in the old building (East
Campus). The building features several artifacts from the defunct Jackson Space Center
and features several attractions as well as a World War II Aircraft display.

MISSIONS Theatre-Salute To Heroes-Located in the AIR ZOO's Main Campus, the


MISSIONS Theatre-Salute To Heroes is one of the highlight attractions at the museum.
The MISSIONS Theatre was the first attraction of its kind in the Midwest. It's a 4D
theatre with a 180 degree looming screen. The theatre is inside of an authentically
recreation of a World War II Quonsett hut. The Salute to Heroes Experience puts you in
the middle of a World War II bombing mission over Nazi Germany. The attraction is
designed to recreate the feeling of being part of the crew of the "Kalamazoo Gal" B-17
through a mission. Not only do objects pop out of the screen towards you, but your seats
also move and you can feel and smell everything that is happening. The Video itself was
developed through a combination of 3D Computer animation and live actors. It was
developed by the AI Group of the United Kingdom.

Montgolfier Brother's Balloon Ride (Main Campus)-The first flight made by man was
in a Hot-Air Balloon by the Montgolfier Brothers. Experience a flight in a hot-air balloon
in this spinning family ride built by Zierer.

Flying Circus- (Main Campus) A kiddie/family Barnstormer ride built by Zierer. Take
the controls of a stunt biplane as you rotate around the centerpiece.

Sentinels At Sea MaxFlight Missions- (Main Campus)Take the controls of one of four
simulators themed to Navy Flying near your favorite Navy aircraft. These simulators

is no longer just an F/A-18 simulator.
Journey's Beyond- (Main Campus) This 3D Simulator will take you through a Space
Mission. Blasting off from Cape Canaveral and docking with the International Space
Station. Once docked, you will take a virtual tour of the station and see the last
component added to it. From there, you will then undock and go through re-entry before
touching down at the Shuttle Landing Strip. With your Mission Complete, you will leave
the simulator in awe of what you just experienced. The film for this simulator was also
developed by the AI Group.

A Trip to Mars- Located in the Space & Science Center "A Trip to Mars" is the Newest
Simulator at the AIR ZOO. The simulator simulates a mission to Mars and lasts
approximately 5 Minutes. During the simulation, guests will experience what might be
NASA's next generation of space vehicles.

Zero Gravity- An S&S Power Frog Hopper ride located at the Space & Science Center.

Space Ball-A 2-Person Gyroscope ride located at the Space & Science Center

S.P.A.D. Perang Dunia I Fighter di Kebun Binatang Air Kalamazoo

The Kalamazoo Aviation Museum Sejarah didirikan pada tahun 1977 dengan gagasan

A Concierge Travel Center opened at the airport in May 2010, offering the ability to book
airline tickets, cruises, tours, car rentals, and hotel rooms.[42]

In June 2010 Apple Vacations announced seasonal flights to Cancún, Mexico (CUN);
Montego Bay, Jamaica (MBJ/MKJS); Fort Myers (RSW); Orlando (MCO); and Las
Vegas (LAS) beginning in December on Sun Country Airlines.[43] In October the airport
was awarded a U.S. Department of Transportation Small Community Air Service
Development grant, worth $750,000, to help reestablish nonstop flights from Lansing to
Washington, D.C. These grants are designed to promote air service development from
smaller markets. Washington, D.C. is the number one end destination from Lansing,
according to the Capital Region Airport Authority.[20][44][45]

Current and future development

The Mid-Michigan Business Travel Coalition, Inc., formerly the Lansing Regional
Business Travel Trust, was formed by the Airport Authority and the Lansing Regional
Chamber of Commerce in 2004. A coalition of the local business, education, and
government community, the Travel Coalition seeks to promote the airport through
negotiations with air carriers and area promotions.[44][46][47]

The airport's most recent Master Plan was released in December 2006. The Plan identifies
four major goals for the airport: Retain and expand scheduled passenger flights, increase
charter operations, increase corporate and general aviation activities, and increase cargo
activities.[48] In order to achieve these goals, the airport over the long term endeavors to,
among other things:

• Construct a new terminal building at the airport


• Interim terminal improvements including additional passenger loading bridges,
rental car, and baggage claim facilities, and passenger security screening
improvements
• Construct a new control tower
• Construct a new 9,000 feet (2,743 m) runway and connector taxiway to replace
the existing 10L/28R runway
• Extend the existing 6/24 runway to 7,785 feet (2,373 m)
• Expand vehicle parking lot parking areas
• Local road improvements for better access to nearby freeway I-69
• Expand the existing business park at the airport
• Cargo and sort facility expansions
• T-hangar and access taxiway expansions for general aviation[48]

The planned expansion at Capital Region International Airport calls for the replacement
of a building occupied by Lansing Community College's aviation mechanics program. In
June 2009 the College announced that it was relocating the program to nearby Mason
Jewett Field (TEW).[49] By February 2010 the program relocation plans were on hold, due
to pending litigation.[50]

The airport received U.S. Port of Entry status in January 2008. The name "Port Lansing"
reflects this designation. Capital City Airport was renamed "Capital Region International
Airport" to emphasize the Port of Entry status. By June a U.S. Customs Inspection
Station was established. To promote increased international commerce in and around the
airport, a Foreign Trade Zone was activated, effective August 24, 2009.[51] The Foreign
Trade Zone includes 840 acres (3.40 km2; 1.31 sq mi) of property near the terminal and
runways. The trade zone allows goods to be delivered there duty free — with reduced,
deferred, or eliminated customs fees — providing a competitive advantage to companies
doing business within the trade zone.[52] According to the Airport Authority, the airport
has over 100 acres (0.40 km2; 0.16 sq mi) of land available for immediate development.

The current terminal building, constructed in 1959, is 161,500 square feet (15,004 m2)
and has four floors. The lower two floors are passenger levels. The third floor houses the
airport's administrative offices and the fourth floor contains the control tower. The
terminal has nine gates, including six jetways. Located in the terminal is the Capital
Market, a gift shop featuring many items unique to mid-Michigan. Café Lan, on the first
level of the terminal, is a full service restaurant and grill serving breakfast, lunch, and
dinner. The Concierge Travel Center offers the ability to book airline tickets, cruises,
hotels, tours, foreign currency exchange, and limousine rentals.[42] The Spartan Pub, on
the second level, is a cocktail bar and coffee shop (serving Coffee Beanery brand) with a
deli menu. A business center is located near gate 6, and it provides complimentary
wireless (SSID "CRAA") Internet access.[54]

The Michigan Department of Transportation Bureau of Aeronautics and Freight Services


is located along the airport's southeast ramp.[55] The Michigan Aeronautics Commission
meets at the airport bimonthly.[56]

The airport has both short and long term parking lots, with a combined capacity of 1,500
parking spaces. There is a 15 minute grace period in the short term parking lot. The short
term lot is closer to the terminal building, though the long term lot generally provides
lower rates. Several area hotels participate in the airport's "Park and Fly" program, in that
they offer special room rates and free shuttle service for airport patrons.[57]

For the 12-month period ending December 31, 2008, the airport had 46,562 total aircraft
operations (a 44 percent decrease from 2007), with an average of 128 per day. 61% of the
aircraft operations were general aviation, 37% were scheduled commercial, and 2% were
military. Of the 80 aircraft based at the airport, 63% were single engine, 26% were multi-
engine, 8% were jet aircraft, and the remaining were helicopters and military aircraft.[2]

Passenger aircraft landings dropped from 12,224 in 2000 to 3,623 in 2009, according to
the Capital Region Airport Authority.[44]

In February 2009 Forbes Magazine ranked Capital Region International Airport tied for
the 18th most expensive airport to fly from in the United States, with an average fare of
35¢ per mile. The magazine ranked two other Michigan airports as more expensive.
Cherry Capital Airport (TVC) in Traverse City was ranked second (41¢ per mile), and
MBS International Airport (MBS) northwest of Saginaw was tied for the 11th most
expensive airport in the country (36¢ per mile).[59]

Incidents and accidents

On July 17, 1985, a single-engine plane, piloted by a passenger, landed at the airport after
the pilot suffered a fatal cardiac arrest. The plane, which departed from Flint, Michigan,
incurred a damaged nose and blown tire upon landing. The pilot of a nearby plane flew
alongside and guided the troubled aircraft to the airport.[72]

In February 1988 Kenneth Hasson, of Los Angeles, was arrested for bringing 30 pounds
(13.6 kg) of cocaine, worth $11 million, through the airport. Hasson and an accomplice
were sentenced to life terms in prison.[73]

On February 11, 1991, a Glasair 3 two-passenger plane skidded off a runway into a field
after experiencing problems with the landing gear. The plane caught fire; however, the
pilot and passenger were not injured.[74]

On August 23, 1991, about 250 hamsters and gerbils shipped from Mississippi chewed
through packing boxes, escaped, and scattered throughout Lansing's airport.[75]

On September 27, 1993, a Midwest Flying Service Aero Commander 690A twin-engine
turbo prop crashed near Lansing en route to Battle Creek, Michigan (BTL) shortly after
take off. The plane was experiencing electrical problems and reportedly changed
direction and altitude continually before colliding with trees. The crew of two were
killed.[76]

On June 6, 1996, Continental Express flight 3123 from Cleveland sustained minor
damaged from a small cockpit fire en route to Lansing. The Beech 1900 aircraft landed
safely in Lansing with no injuries to the 2 crew and 16 passengers.[77]

On November 24, 2004, Northwest Flight 1933 from Detroit slid off the runway into a
field. The flight had been delayed due to inclement weather. No injuries were reported.[78]

On July 22, 2007, Northwest Flight 619 to Minneapolis had to return to Lansing after
takeoff due to smoke appearing in the cockpit. No injuries were reported.[79]
On April 18, 2008, a Beech twin-engine airplane flying from Tomahawk, Wisconsin
sustained heavy damage when its landing gear retracted while landing. No serious
injuries to the pilot and passenger were reported.[80]

On July 5, 2009, a Cessna single-engine airplane made an emergency landing after its
landing gear would not go down. The plane was damaged; the pilot and two passengers
were not injured.[81]

On February 14, 2010, Delta Connection flight 3679 with 35 passengers returned to the
airport terminal after a passenger became unruly and tried to exit the plane while taxiing
prior to takeoff. The Bombardier CRJ200, en route to Detroit, was delayed for three
hours. The passenger was detained by airport police and Federal Bureau of Investigation
agents.[82]

On June 10, 2010, a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) official noticed a


deceased person in a vehicle parked in the airport's long term parking lot. The driver, a
victim of a suicide, parked the vehicle on February 25 and was not in plain view.[83]

Capital Region International Airport (IATA: LAN, ICAO: KLAN, FAA LID: LAN),
formerly known as Lansing Capital City Airport, is a public, Class C airport located 3
miles (5 km) northwest of downtown Lansing in DeWitt Township, Michigan.

The airport is owned and operated by the Capital Region Airport Authority, a six-member
governing board. Three members represent Ingham County and three members represent
the City of Lansing. The Airport Authority also oversees nearby Jewett Field (TEW) in
Mason, Michigan.[4]

According to the Airport Authority, 265,967 people flew in or out of the airport in 2009,
a 38 percent drop from 2008, and a 59 percent drop since 2000.[3]

Modal Daerah International Airport (IATA: LAN, ICAO: KLAN, LID FAA: LAN),

The first recorded flight in Lansing took place on October 15, 1911, at an old racecourse
(now the Red Cedar Golf Course). More than 20,000 spectators watched pilot Jimmy

The dedication of Capital City Airport was held on the weekend of July 14 – 15, 1928,
and attended by 70,000 people.[6] A Stinson Detroiter plane arrived at the airport with
Lansing's first air mail delivery on July 5, 1928. Mayor Laird J. Troyer, Chamber of
Commerce President Alton J. Hager, and airport committee chairman Clyde B. Smith,
among others, were present to witness the plane's arrival.[7] Regular cargo service from
Capital City Airport began on July 17, 1928, via Transamerican Airlines. That day pilot
C.V. Pickup departed with five sacks of mail en route to New York City. Lansing
postmaster Walter G. Rogers was among those present to witness the event.[8]

In 1929 J.D. Foster completed construction on a 60-by-120-foot, 7,200 square feet (669
m2) aircraft hangar, the first building in what would become known as the Francis
Aviation Complex at Capital City Airport. By the end of the year, fixed base operators
Foster Airways, SKF Air Service, Inc., and Wolverine Flying Service, Ltd. had
constructed hangars at the airport.[9] Passenger service commenced on September 1,
1929, by Kohler Airlines. By 1934 Pennsylvania Airlines and Transport was providing
air mail and passenger service to Detroit, Muskegon, Grand Rapids, and across Lake
Michigan.[10] The Foster Hangar housed a flight school operated by Harvey Hughes
from 1934 to 1936. In the late 1930s, Lansing aviator, Lieutenant Arthur J. Davis,
operated Michigan Airways, Inc. out of the hangar.[9]

During World War II, Francis Aviation and Hughes Flying Service provided ground and
flight training to 300 pilots per month as part of the U.S. Government's Civilian Pilot
Training Program and War Training Service. The training included three weeks of
instruction at Michigan State College and continued at Capital City Airport.[11]

The airport's original terminal building was constructed in 1940. The same year, a 100-
by-100-foot concrete hangar and an adjoining office wing were completed at the west end
of the airport. In addition, the airport acquired 67 acres (27 ha) of land adjoining the north
side of the airport and runway 6/24 was extended by 1,000 feet (305 m). Also in 1940 the
airport unsuccessfully bid for an $8.4 million Aircraft Engine Research Laboratory of the
National Advisory Committee on Aeronautics

Dedikasi Modal City Airport diadakan pada akhir pekan tanggal 14 Juli - 15, 1928, dan
dihadiri oleh 70.000 orang [6] Sebuah pesawat Stinson Detroiter tiba di bandara dengan
udara pertama pengiriman Lansing mail pada tanggal 5 Juli 1928.. Walikota Laird J.
Troyer, Kamar Dagang Presiden Alton J. Hager, dan bandara ketua komite Clyde B.
Smith, antara lain, hadir untuk menyaksikan kedatangan pesawat. [7] kargo layanan
reguler dari Capital City Airport dimulai pada tanggal 17 Juli 1928, melalui Airlines
Transamerican. Itu pilot hari C.V. Pickup berangkat dengan lima karung surat perjalanan
ke New York City. Lansing postmaster Walter G. Rogers di antara mereka yang hadir

Pada tahun 1929 JD Foster menyelesaikan pembangunan, 60-by-120-kaki 7.200 kaki


persegi (669 m2) hanggar pesawat, bangunan pertama di apa yang akan menjadi dikenal
sebagai Penerbangan Francis Kompleks di Capital City Airport. Pada akhir tahun,
operator basis tetap Foster Airways, SKF Air Service, Inc, dan Wolverine Flying Service,
Ltd telah membangun hanggar di bandara [9] layanan Penumpang dimulai pada tanggal 1
September 1929, oleh Kohler Airlines.. Dengan 1934 Airlines Pennsylvania dan
Transportasi memberikan surat udara dan pelayanan penumpang ke Detroit, Muskegon,

Selama Perang Dunia II, Francis Penerbangan dan Hughes Flying Layanan yang
diberikan tanah dan pelatihan penerbangan ke 300 pilot per bulan sebagai bagian dari
Pilot Sipil Pelatihan Pemerintah AS dan Perang Program Training Service. Pelatihan ini

Pada bulan Januari 2008 Capital Region Bandara Internasional ditunjuk sebagai
Pelabuhan Internasional Masuk ke Amerika Serikat, dengan Bea Cukai dan Perlindungan
Perbatasan petugas yang bertugas untuk memproses penumpang internasional dan
angkutan udara. Pada bulan Mei 2009, baru 14.000 kaki persegi (1.301 m2) stasiun
inspeksi federal dibuka pada terminal, mampu memproses 200 penumpang per jam. [38]

Pada bulan November 2008 sebuah 500 kaki (152 m) perluasan terbesar dari tiga
landasan pacu (sekarang 8.506 kaki (2.593 m)) telah diselesaikan untuk memungkinkan
pesawat yang lebih besar untuk menggunakan bandara. Proyek $ 9.900.000 diperlukan
penutupan sementara Jalan DeWitt dekatnya. [39]

Pada bulan Maret 2009, Federal Aviation Administration mengumumkan rencana


konsolidasi radar kontrol bandara Lansing, serta yang bandar udara di Grand Rapids dan
Muskegon, untuk dekat Kalamazoo / Battle Creek International Airport di 2013. Biaya
tabungan bergerak akan terjadi setelah selesai dari udara menara baru Bandara
Kalamazoo kontrol lalu lintas (TRACON). Meskipun konsolidasi, masing-masing
bandara akan tetap mempertahankan udara sendiri menara kontrol lalu lintas. [40]
Pada bulan November 2009 Lockheed Martin, operator stasiun layanan penerbangan
yang terletak di Bandara Internasional Capital Region, mengumumkan penutupan stasiun
layanan, efektif Februari 2010. Stasiun Lansing adalah salah satu dari 13 untuk menutup
nasional dan menyediakan 25 pekerjaan dan $ 120.000 di sewa tahunan ke bandara. [41]
