01 Brazil
02 Belém
the country and other cities in South America. Attracted to the possible job
offers, Belém has many poor inhabitants and quite extensive slum areas around
it, but the Center has quite some pretty places.
Belém is a jumping-off point for those
seeking Amazon adventures, and also one of
Brazil’s busiest ports – about 60 miles upriver from
the Atlantic Ocean. The river is the Para, part of
the greater Amazon river system, and the city is
built on a number of small islands intersected by
channels and other rivers.
One part of Belém contains modern
skyscrapers and the other part, the colonial section, has charming tree-filled
squares, churches, and traditional blue tiles.
When in Belém, you should not miss the Cidade Velha, or old town. Here
are the best colonial buildings preserved, among which the Cathedral (1748).
Also the Praça da República (Republic Square), a nightlife hangout, crowned
with the Neo Classical Teatro da Paz is a must. Other sights are the 1909
Basilica of Nossa Senhora de Nazaré, with its
astounding stained glass windows, paid for with
the profits made on rubber plants, upstream. A
peculiar sight is the replica of the Big Ben tower
on the Praça do Mercado, just next to the fishing
port. A very nice touristic center was recently
opened in the old harbor area. There are three
different spaces: one for events such like
conventions, one for gastronomy and another one
for arts. There you can also schedule light boat rides. The most interesting of all
leaves at four o’clock every morning, and leads the tourists to the so called
“Parrots Island”- these birds chose it to spend the nights, and the visit occurs at
the time they begin to fly away: unforgetable for birds lovers.
Temperatures in Belém range from 22.15 to 32.85 (Celsius), and rainfall
in Belém varies from 198.0 to 1488.0 (mm/month). The equatorial climate
means little variance from day to day, but the wettest months are between
January and May.

Suggest of Coming
• By Plane
During the four weeks we have the pleasure of welcoming you in Belém,
we will try to provide you with an interesting mixture of the medical clerkship
and social program.
Insurance
Social Program
It always will start on first Monday and finish last Friday of each month.
Normally, the clerkship starts between 7.30 a.m. and 8.00 a.m. in the morning
and lasts until 3.00 p.m. or 4.00 p.m. but it can vary depending on the
department. Please ask your tutor about your timetable on the first day.
The incoming student will work at the hospital from Monday to Friday
during 4 weeks, being assisted for a staff doctor or a resident. You will be able
to see consultations, physical examinations, ambulatorial procedures, image
exams, surgeries, etc… Depending on your level of speaking Portuguese and
the permission of the head of the department, you may do yourself the physical
examinations and consultations, assisted for a doctor. It is advised that you
must bring your own stethoscope and white coat. Students must wear
pants/jeans, T- shirts and shoes.
We expect the exchange student to participate seriously and actively at
the department. We know that this international exchange does not only mean
hard work in the hospital but it should also be a lot of fun! If you need one day
off, please ask your tutor in advance.
Certificates
You will get an IFMSA certificate after your clerkship, for this, you must
attend at least 75% of the clerkship's proposed activities. We will hand it out to
you and at the end of your clerkship, ask your tutor to sign and stamp it.
06 Home Stay
You can reach the house in which will be hosted until two days before the
start of their training and stay up to two days after the end of it.
You will be entitled to, at least, two meals per day.
You can ask the host family more specific information about the city.
For a good living is important to talk with your hosts on the house rules,
habits, culture, religion and social program, as Brazil hosts a people culturally
very diverse and each family may have its merits.
Do not feel embarrassed or upset because the Brazilian families are very
hospitable and will be happy to receive you!
