'East meets East’ Chinese VIP Highlights Cambridge Investment Opportunities

Mr Zhou Xiaoming, Minister Counsellor from the Chinese Embassy visits Cambridge
to investigate investment opportunities in IT and Life Sciences.
Stamford, Lincolnshire, January 06, 2011 -- Mr Zhou Xiaoming, Minister Counsello
r from the Chinese Embassy, came to Cambridge to look at inward investment oppor
tunities with two of the city’s key sectors - Information and Communications Techn
ology (ICT) and Life Sciences.
This visit formed part of the Minister Counsellor’s tour of the East of England. I
t also came as UK Trade and Investment (UKTI) in the East of England launched it
s East meets East campaign, which aims to make more companies across the regio
n aware of the wealth of export opportunities in Asia.
Mr Zhou Xiaoming started his day at Health Enterprise East (HEE), the NHS Innova
tion Hub for the East of England based at Papworth Hospital where he was able to
find out about new product development and global licensing opportunities. His
day also included visits to Cambridge Consultants and Innova Bioscience and fini
shed with a tour of TWI, the Cambridge based centre of expertise on welding and
joining of materials. TWI has many clients in China and TWI s friction stir weld
ing is now used in the Chinese space programme and is seen as integral to China
s developing aerospace and automotive sectors.
Speaking after the visit Mr Zhou Xiaoming, said: “Today’s visit has been extremely p
roductive and I have been very impressed with the innovation, skills and entrepr
eneurship I have seen today in Cambridge. I am particularly pleased to hear abou
t the strong links, which all the companies I have visited currently enjoy with
China. This visit really confirms what an exciting place Cambridge is to do busi
ness with right now.”
Vic Annells, International Trade Director for UKTI, said:
“Without question our relationship with China is vitally important - whether selli
ng, trading, investing or franchising, China offers opportunities in abundance t
o UK companies, large or small. This year China also entered the top ten countri
es with which businesses in this region trades. Here in the East of England ther
e is also great potential for Chinese companies, particularly within the ICT and
Life Sciences sectors. I’m therefore delighted that over the next few days the Mi
nister Counsellor will see first hand, investment opportunities within world cla
ss organisations like those he has met in Cambridge today.
“The rapidly expanding economies in China and Asia as a whole are providing a dema
nd for local companies to grow and look at new export opportunities. With this i
n mind UKTI in the East of England is today launching a new campaign ‘East meets E
ast,’ to encourage businesses in the region to consider this rapidly growing marke
t.”
Dr Nick Gee, Chief Executive Officer at Innova Biosciences, said:
“China is a major force in bioscience R&D and represents a significant growth oppo
rtunity for Innova Biosciences. With UKTI support, Innova made an exploratory vi
sit to the country earlier in the year and we were delighted therefore to host t
he minister and to hear more about the opportunities in China for Innova’s pioneer
ing bioconjugation technology.” - www.innovabiosciences.com.
