MUSTARD SEED HARAMBE-CAMEROON

ENTREPRENEURSHIP PROGRAM AT YAOUNDE CENTRAL PRISON (EPYCP)

MUSTARD SEED-HARAMBE CAMEROON ENTREPRENEURSHIP PROGRAM AT YAOUNDE CENTRAL PRISON (EPYCP) Todays prison reinsertion realities have highlighted the need for organizations to work together to establish ways in which prisoners can reintegrate the community with low risks of reverting to violence, or any act that led them to prison in the first place. To remedy the problem of reinsertion of prisoners in our society, Mustard Seed in collaboration with Harambe Cameroon, as well as the Central Prison of Yaound Administration, will work cooperatively to develop an Entrepreneurial solution to the reinsertion of prisoners in our communities. The penitentiary in Cameroon is governed by the Ministry of Justice. It is made up both prisoners and detainees under the supervision of the Officials of the Penitentiary Administration. These inmates are imprisoned for one reason which is mostly theft, murder and other criminal offenses. The detainees are mostly those who are held for some political reasons. There are several prisons in Cameroon amongst which the Nkondengui Central Prison - Yaounde. In most of these prisons amongst which the Nkondengui Central prison is not left out, the issue of overpopulation leading to very poor housing conditions and feeding are some of the major obstacles they face. The inmates however, suffer marginalization not only by the fact that they are abandoned by their families but also, are not given a place in society even after being granted freedom. Thus, the need for these prisoners to be rehabilitated, so that they can think positively even while in prison and get to put their different talents to use as a means of surviving during these periods of detention. The solution we propose to this problem will take the form of an Entrepreneurship Program implemented at the Yaounde Central Prison, to help inmates develop project ideas they would implement, with the help of Mustard Seeds and Harambe-Cameroons financial and technical assistance, once their sentence is over.

Main Aim: To rehabilitate the Penitentiary by making the prisoners see their sojourn in the cell as a corrective measure not punitive, to bring prisoners to think positively and to ameliorate prison conditions. It is also aimed at getting the prisoners to use their time while in prison to think and conceive micro projects to develop their communities and also as a means of livelihood be it under detention or when granted freedom. Specific Objectives: i. To assist in their feeding by donating food materials. ii. Counseling the inmates to get to think positively about themselves. iii. Organizing a concert and a prison fellowship as a means of bringing them close to God. iv. Helping them to conceive and come up with projects that could be a source of income be it when out of prison or not even while there. Harambe-Cameroon - Transforming our problems into opportunities!

Project design: The targeted group consists of the prisoners of the Kodengui Central prison and the project will run for 20 days : from the 1st of August 2011 to the 19th of August 2011. Prison Realities: Starvation to death because they have no food and most of them are not visited by their family members Overpopulation; instead of housing 800 inmates, it houses about 4000 inmates. Violations of rights that is, the weaker inmates are used as slaves by stronger inmates. On December 29th, 2010 Mustard Seed in collaboration with Harambe-Cameroon, launched an Entrepreneurship program at the Yaounde Central Prison.
