GEOGRAPHY ASSIGNMENT (WINTER HOLIDAYS)


GRADE – IX ICSE

DATE OF SUBMISSION – 17TH JANUARY 2011

The holiday assignment is for the part fulfillment of Internal Assessment requirements for the Final
Examinations: 2010-2011 through the submission of a Project Work. The topics for assignment may be
selected from the list of suggested assignments given below (ANY ONE)

Suggested list of assignments:

1. Weather records:
• Maintaining and interpreting weather records as found in the newspaper for at least one
season.
o Incase of India, you may collect the weather data from any newspaper for the months
of March to May; or, June to September; or, October and November; or, December to
February of a particular Indian city.
o The data has to be collected on a daily basis from the newspaper and a Xerox copy of
the same has to be pasted in the project sheet as per the date on a weekly basis.
• The data has to be interpreted on a weekly and then a monthly basis for the weather
variations.
• The overall interpretation of the weather data should be done for the entire season
thereafter on the changing weather pattern.

2. Collection of data from secondary sources:
• Collect newspaper and magazine articles of geographical value and write a synopsis on
current issues like-
o Use of earth resources / development activities / dangers of development
o Ecological disasters like droughts, earthquakes, volcanoes, floods, landslides,
cyclones and tornadoes in the world
• The project work in this category must be supported with recent examples, photographs /
pictures, data / graphs, maps and newspaper cuttings etc.

3. Tools and techniques used in the study of Geography, like:


• Maps and Map Projections.
• Remote Sensing, Aerial Photographs, Satellite Images and Stereoscopy.
o The project should include wider range of pictures / plates and information in this
category for a synopsis.

4. Meteorological Instruments and their uses:


• Six’ Maximum and minimum thermometer, Mercury Barometer, Aneroid Barometer,
Wind Vane, Anemometer, Rain Gauge and Hygrometer.
This project should include
o collection and pasting of variety of pictures / plates on the instruments.
o explanation on the precautions while taking measurement from these instruments.
o mentioning the unit of measurement for each instrument.
o discussion on its make up / nature / technique of their use / handling.
o extended research on Barograph and Pluviograph (automatic instruments to
measure atmospheric pressure and precipitation).

Please collect related information on the topic of your choice from various sources of
information.

The project work should be completely handwritten on A-4 sheets or practical sheets
with atleast one side blank. The blank face of the sheet may be used for pasting related
photographs / plates, data, graphs, maps or newspaper cuttings etc.

Only the cover page may be computer printed.

The project work should be submitted in a simple plastic folder.

Only black and blue colour should be used in writing the project work.

The format of the project should be strictly as per the instructions given in the
classroom.
