With a view to update Civil Engineers in these exciting areas of development, Civil-
Aid Technoclinic Pvt. Ltd. started imparting training in software package in 1998. In
the modern day scenario, it is not possible to analyse sophisticated structures manually.
This calls for use of specialized software packages. In this direction we have
commenced with STAAD III training in 1998 and are now training in STAAD.Pro
2006, the latest version till date.

STAAD.Pro is a widely used software for structural analysis and design from Research
Engineers International. It is simple to use and user friendly. No prior knowledge of the
language of the program is necessary to get started.
The STAAD.Pro Graphical User Interface (GUI): It is used to generate the model,
which can then be analyzed using the STAAD engine. After analysis and design is
completed, the GUI can also be used to view the results graphically.
The objective of this manual is to familiarize the user with the basic principals involved
in the implementation of the various analysis / design facilities offered by the STAAD
engine. As a general rule, the sequence in which the facilities are discussed follows the
recommended sequence of their usage in the input file.
Input Generator
The user communicates with STAAD through an input file. The input file is a text file
consisting of a series of commands which are executed sequentially.
Types of Structures
A structure can be defined as an assemblage of elements. STAAD is capable of
analyzing and designing structures consisting of both frame, plate/shell and solid
elements.
Unit Systems
The user is allowed to input data and request output in almost all commonly used
engineering unit systems including MKS, SI, and FPS.
3
Civil-Aid Technoclinic Pvt.Ltd.
STAAD is equipped with a state –of –the art plate/shell and solid finite element.
Member Properties
Cable Members
Member Offsets
Some members of a structure may not be concurrent with the incident joints thereby
creating offsets. This offset distance is specified in terms of global or local coordinate
system.
Material Constants
The material constants are: modulus of elasticity (E); weight density (DEN);
poisson’s ratio (POISS); co-efficient of thermal expansion (ALPHA); composite
damping ratio; and beta angle (BETA).
4
Civil-Aid Technoclinic Pvt.Ltd.
Supports
STAAD allows specifications of supports that are parallel as well as inclined to the
global axes.
The master / slave option is provided to enable the user to model rigid links in the
structural system.
Loads
Loads in a structure can be specified as joint load, member load, temperature load and
fixed end member load
Load Generator
STAAD is equipped with built – in algorithms to generate moving loads and lateral
seismic loads on a structure.
Analysis Facilities
Member end forces and moments in the member result from loads applied to the
structure. These forces are in the local member coordinate system.
Multiple Analyses
Structural analysis / design may require multiple analyses in the same run. STAAD
allows the user to change input such as member properties, support conditions etc. in
an input file to facilitate multiple analyses in the same run.
Extensive design capabilities are available in STAAD for steel, concrete and timber
sections.
5
Civil-Aid Technoclinic Pvt.Ltd.
Footing Design
A footing design facility capable of designing individual footings for user specified
supports is available.
Printing Facilities
All input data and output may be printed using PRINT command available in
STAAD.
Miscellaneous Facilities
- Perform rotation : After the geometry has been specified, this command can be
used to rotate the structure shape through any desired angle about any global axis.
- Substitute: Joint and member numbers may be redefined in STAAD through the
use of the SUBSTITUTE command.
- Calculation of Centre of Gravity: STAAD is capable of calculating the centre of
gravity of the structure.
Menu bar: Located at the top of the screen, the Menu bar gives access to all the
facilities of STAAD.Pro.
Toolbar: The dockable Toolbar gives access to the most frequently used commands.
Main Window: This is the largest area at the centre of the screen, where the model
and the results are displayed.
Page Control: The Page Control is a set of tabs that appear to the left of the Main
Window.
Data Area: The right part of the screen is called the Data Area, where different
dialog boxes, tables, list boxes, etc. appear depending on the type of operation one is
performing.

The basic steps involved in modelling, analyzing and designing a structure are:
37
Civil-Aid Technoclinic Pvt.Ltd.
Select the tools to be used to initially construct the model. Add Beam, Add Plate
or Add Solid are the starting points for constructing Beams, Plates or Solids. Open
Structure Wizard provides access to library of structural templates. These options
are also available in the menus of GUI. After selecting one of the above, Click on
Finish.
38
Civil-Aid Technoclinic Pvt.Ltd.
Snap node / beam dialog box appears in the data area on the right side of the screen along
with the construction lines on the main window. The spaces between the adjacent
construction lines can also be altered.
39
Civil-Aid Technoclinic Pvt.Ltd.
Apart from the database materials we can create a new material property and assign to
the structure.

To Display the node and beam numbers, right click the mouse button anywhere in the
drawing area, choose labels, check the node numbers and beam numbers.
Then Click OK.
Beam & Node numbers will be displayed on the structure as below.
Specifying supports
43

Add fixed supports, select Support 2 in the ‘Supports – Whole Structure’ dialog box
and assign to respective nodes.
Specifying loads
44
Civil-Aid Technoclinic Pvt.Ltd.
Click on primary load, we see ‘Create new definition / load cases / load items’ Dialog
box . Enter Title & load case number. Click Ok. ‘Load’ dialog box will appear. Select
‘Load case 1’, click on ‘Add’ for selecting the type of loading in that load case. Select
load, by adding intensities assign to the required members.

As the analysis progresses, several messages appears on the screen as shown above.
Once the analysis is complete notice that we can choose from the three options
available in the above dialog box.
View Output file – Option allows to view the output file created by STAAD.
The output file contains the numerical results produced in response to the various
input commands, specified during model generation process. It also tells us
whether any errors were encountered
Go to Post Processing Mode – Option allows to go to post processor where we
can verify the results, view the results graphically, plot result diagrams etc.
Stay in Modeling Mode – Continues to be in model generation mode

The various structures that are commonly adopted in our day to day analysis and design
are trusses, plane frames, grids and space frames. The various loadings are dead loads,
imposed loads, wind loads and seismic loads. In the following examples and exercises
the above structures along with the various load cases and their combinations have been
dealt with.
