JUMPSTART INSTALLATION ON

SOLARIS x86 MACHINE

INTRODUCTION

What is it?
- a custom mode during installation of Solaris
Where is it used?
- on servers
Why?
- automated installation on many computers at the
same time
An example?
- installation of Solaris on 100 systems, 70 are
SPARC for engineering group and 30 are X86 for
marketing group
JUMPSTART INSTALLATION
SCENARIO
1.Create a jumpstart installation
server
 Create an installation directory on the server
 run setup_install_server command - populate
the installation directory with solaris_10 tools
2.Create the client configuration
files
 Create sysidcfg file
 Create rules file
 Create a begin script
 Create a profile file
 Create a finish file
 Run the check script and validate the rules and
profile
3.Share the installation and
configuration directories
 Edit the dfstab file
 Start the nfs server
 Share the directories
 Verify file sharing
4.Create the client tftpboot files

 Using add_install_client command


 Enabling a preboot execution environment(pxe)
by creating a macro that defines boot file and
boot server ip
5.Configure and Run the DHCP
Server

- server name and IP


- network address
- IP of server
- ethernet addresses of the clent
- GUI=/usr/sadm/admin/bin/dhcpmgr
a.Run dhcpmgr:
Select Configure 
as a DHCP Server 
and click OK.
b.The DHCP 
Configuration Wizard 
appears: 
c.Select Text Files 
and click Next
  d. Verify the 
storage path and 
click Next
.e. Select a 
nameservice and 
click Next

f.Verify the 
lease 
information and 
click Next.
 g. Verify the 
DNS domain 
information and 
click Next.
●BootSrvA, the IP address of the boot (TFTP)
server
●Trival FTP

●BootFile, the filename of the NBP executable

located on the boot server,downloaded via TFTP,


and executed by PXE.
●PXE is an envi' to boot computers using n/w

interface independent of data storage devices or


existing OS
Final clean up

In /tftpboot/menu<filename>.lst = - install dhcp

Precautions

●Determine if you need to preserve an existing


operating system and user data.
●Check if the system has enough disk space for

the Solaris software.


●Prepare the system for custom JumpStart

installation -sysidcfg,rules,profile
●Prepare optional custom JumpStart features-

begin,finish scripts or files


●Prepare to install the Solaris software from the

network – boot
●Perform an installation or upgrade
Post Installation

The following are the log files for the JumpStart


installation:

/var/sadm/system/logs/
- install_log
- begin_log
- finish_log
- sysidtool.log
