In any healthcare setting, protection from exposure to blood and body fluids as well as other hazardous substances is of critical importance for you
and your patients. Barrier effectiveness, glove powder complications and patient and healthcare worker sensitivities or allergies should be considered
during the glove selection process.
Factors in choosing the appropriate glove material include the procedure being performed, the protection level required, the potential for contact
with body fluids and exposure to bloodborne pathogens, possible reactions to glove materials or components, and glove powder complications.
Glove material strength and durability should be appropriate for the task(s) and their associated risks. Also, gloves should fit snugly, but be comfortable.
Understanding the differences between latex, nitrile and synthetic barrier properties and material strengths will help you make the right glove choice.

In an ongoing study of occupational blood or body fluid exposures to skin or mucous membranes at approximately 70 hospitals since 1992, over
two-thirds of the cases have involved blood or body fluid contact with the eyes, nose, or mouth, with the eye(s) exposed more than half of the time.
Although gloves were reported to have been worn in the majority of cases, goggles or protective eyeglasses (with side shields) were only worn
in about 3% of the cases. Face shields or masks were worn about 15% of the time. Regular use of available personal protective equipment can
minimize blood and body fluid exposures.

Medical Waste Containment

Choosing the right container for your needs is very important.
Things you should consider are:
• What type of waste do I produce?
• What type of storage area do I have and how much room?
Is it in a secure location?
• Do I need sharps containers?
• Do I have liquid waste?
• Do I have chemotherapy waste?
• Do I have pathological waste?

Not all medical waste can be packaged together. Sharps material

must be packaged in sharps containers which may either be
transported or placed in another container to be transported.
Chemotherapy and pathological wastes must be identified. Certain
states require special handling and disposal of these materials,
therefore, they must be identified. Check with your Stericycle
representative to get details about your state specific requirements.

HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT SHARPS CONTAINER

NIOSH
The National Institute for Occupational Safety & Health (NIOSH) has developed a document, “Selecting, Evaluating and Using Sharps
Disposal Containers,” which presents comprehensive guidelines for selecting sharps containers and evaluating their efficacy as part
of an overall needlestick injury prevention plan. Within this document, NIOSH has clearly described sharps container design elements
that contribute to healthcare worker (HCW) risk reduction.

These elements include:

Functionality Accessibility
waste containment

• Puncture, leak and impact resistant • Ease of operation

• Appropriate size and design to accommodate the largest • Guards that prevent hands from entering
sharps used • Handles to facilitate safe use, removal and transport
• Secure closure mechanism • Free of obstacles, away from wall switches, clear of impact zone
Visibility • Placed within arm’s reach and below eye level at their point of use
• Visible and recognizable with proper biohazard warning label • Appropriate wall mount height (52”– 56”) to allow for view and
safe access of container door
• Opening completely visible and clear before using
• Fill status visible prior to use
Eye Level = 57 inches
Accommodation Line
of sig
ht
15 degrees

An ideal standing installation

• Ease of storage and assembly height for a fixed sharps
disposal container is
• Intuitive and easy to use 52 to 56 inches.
This height will comfortably
• Promotes one-hand disposal accommodate 95% of all
adult female workers.
• Safe mounting system
Thumb tip reach =
• Durable, stable and cleanable 11 to 19 inches

The use of a container with a counter-balanced door in a patient exam room

increases ease of use and decreases risk of exposure by facilitating one-hand
disposal and tamper resistance. Containers mounted in locking cabinets at
the appropriate height of 52”– 56” will further lower your risk of exposure.

Patient/Exam Room Container
OSHA Standard 1910.1030(e)(2)(ii)(J) calls for prompt placement of needles and syringes in a puncture-resistant
container. Protect your healthcare workers and patients by using these OSHA compliant sharps containers in
patient/exam rooms and critical care units.
