¾ Description
This course provides an advanced technical overview of current and coming UMTS technologies;
UMTS is one of the third-generation (3G) mobile systems being developed within the International
Telecommunications Union's IMT-2000 framework. UMTS is a global 3G system implemented with
WCDMA technology, The course begins with an overview of WCDMA and UMTS concepts, including
spectrum allocations, network topology, protocol stack, and channel mappings. It then describes the
procedures of the Access Stratum protocol layers, covering the Radio Resource Control, Radio Link
Control, and Medium Access Control layers. Next, physical layer transmit procedures are covered, as well
as procedures for acquisition, random access, paging, measurements, power control, and transmit
diversity.
¾ Objectives
This course addresses the needs of engineers and technicians who are already experienced in mobile
systems and will move to new tasks. This course provides the technical platform for system developers
but also for operation services, network planners and technical management

¾ Course Duration
This course is designed to give the participant an overview of signaling technologies and protocols
used to manage and control voice calls in Core Networks for UMTS up to release 5. The theoretical
background will provide a better understanding for the Core Network in general and signaling in specific.
¾ Objectives
The inter-working between the different protocols (RRC, RANAP, NBAP and ALCAP).
Will be able to identify normal and abnormal signaling behavior and to use signaling information for
trouble shooting and tuning the network.
The content of the different messages, and relate it to CDMA & UTRAN principles and will be able to
use this information to tune the UMTS radio network.

• RANAP statistical analysis: identify areas of poor performance; recognise anomalies analyze
data by Iups Guided exercises: Iups message breakdown and analysis (Iups traces to be
provided by operator).
• RNSAP Radio Link setup, addition, deletion.

The UMTS Radio Network Planning designed to provide a solid understanding of how a radio network
is designed and planned for UMTS. The course emphasizes the understanding of the intimate relation
between capacity and coverage and the impact on capacity and coverage by different parameters. UMTS
Radio Network Planning includes illustrative examples and practical exercises.
