Deception

From the time Tanaka brokers Sayuri and her sister away from their home, the theme of
deception guides the course of events in the novel. While Tanaka's deception is indirect
(after all, he never actually tells young Sayuri what her future holds), Hatsumomo's
deception is overt. Hatsumomo not only lies about Sayuri, but she goes so far as to set her
up to look guilty when she is innocent, as when she puts money into Sayuri's obi before
telling Mother that Sayuri sold some of her jewelry. Hatsumomo also makes empty
promises so she can manipulate and dominate the young apprentice geisha.

As much as Sayuri resents so much deception in her life, the irony is that she takes on the
profession of a geisha, which relies on deception. As a geisha, Sayuri assumes an identity
other than her true one, she laughs at jokes that are not funny, and she learns to make a
certain kind of blank face that men can believe means whatever they like. Her success
depends on her ability to appear not as herself but as whomever her clients want her to
be.

As an innocent young girl in Yoroido, she absolutely convinces herself that Tanaka will
adopt her, her sister, and her father after her mother dies. It is an idea she embraces and
then persuades herself is the truth, which only makes the heartbreak worse when it is not
true. In Kyoto, she convinces herself that her sister has been taken to another okiya and
that they will reunite at geisha school and escape together. She does not consider any
other possibility, which again makes the reality all the harder to endure. As she ages,
however, Sayuri learns the cynical ways of Gion as she learns more about herself.
Although her fantasies about the Chairman seem like a regression to her childish ways of
thinking, in the end, her dream comes true.

What is a Geisha?

The word Geisha literally translates to "arts person" or "one trained in arts" (gei = art,
sha = person). It is also sometimes described as "women of arts, which is exactly what a
Geisha is - a woman trained in the traditional arts of Japan such as dance, music, singing
to name a few.

Are Maiko and Geisha prostitutes?

Most certainly not! A Maiko and Geisha's profession is based on preserving the
traditional arts such as dance, singing and music and entertaining in a non-sexual manner.

The confusion as to whether Geisha are prostitutes or not seems to have stemmed both
from the close proximity Geisha had to courtesans in the Edo era and the fact that they
did technically originate from the red light districts. The main culprit though appears to
be from post World War II occupation by U.S. service men.
Many U.S. service came home from Japan with wild and raunchy stories of "Gee-sha
Girls" whom, for most of the part where not in fact real Geisha, but rather, ordinary
Japanese women or prostitutes masquerading or calling themselves "Geisha", largely
because it was easiest for the service men to understand.

Of course, the large majority of service men did not know the difference, and despite the
survival of the Geisha districts after the enforcement of the prostitution laws in 1957 and
the subsequent closure of the red light districts, the misconception has haunted the flower
and willow world ever since.

How can I tell apart a Maiko from a Geisha?

It is actually very simple and easy to distinguish between the two. Starting from head to
toe, the main points of difference are:

• Hairstyle: Maiko have their natural hair dressed in various traditional styles according
to their position in the Maiko hierarchy. Junior Maiko wear the Wareshinobu style and
progress onto the Ofuku style as she becomes a senior Maiko. As a senior Maiko, she has
the privilege to wear her hair in the Katsuyama style and Yakko Shimada style for special
occasions, and finally the Sakkou hairstyle, right before she becomes a Geisha. The
maiko of the Pontocho hanamachi wear an additional 5 hairstyles through the duration of
their training: Umemodoki, Oshidori no Hina, Osa Bune/fune, Mizu/sui Guruma and
Ikiguruma. Geisha wear a katsura (wig) in the Shimada-mage style (or traditional style of
choice). Please read the hairstyle article for further information.

• Kanzashi: Maiko wear a wide variety of kanzashi such as tsumami kanzashi (also
called hana kanzashi) made from habutae silk. They also wear kushi or tenkazari with
silk. These ornaments generally correspond with the relevant season and month. Geisha
only wear a few pins and a kushi in their hair which are generally plain in style and not
covered in silk. This was a direct result of the sumptuary regulations imposed on Geisha
during the Edo era. The exception being a Geisha performing a formal tea-ceremony,
where she may wear a small hana-kanzashi. Please view the kanzashi calendar for further
information.

•Make Up: Maiko paint their faces white, but leave a line of bare skin around their
natural hairline. There is also a greater amount of pink blush on the cheek and eye area,
and her eyes and eyebrows have a noticeable amount of red. She will also only partially
paint her lips in (refer to the diagrams below). When Geisha wear the white make-up,
they leave no bare hair line, due to them wearing katsura. They have minimal amount of
red outlining the eyes and eyebrows, and the pink blush is subtle. She will paint her lips
almost in full. A Geisha not wearing white make up will wear a subtle, often natural
shade of make-up and her hair pulled back in a simple bun. Please view the make-up
article for further information.
Nitta Sayuri was not born in Kyoto, such as who is known for many people. And his birth
name is Sakamoto Chiyo, a little girl who comes from a small fishing village named
Yoroido. But his past is like drowning in a colorful kimono and glamorous life in the
geisha district, Gion. After both parents died and her sister, Satsu, fled from Gion, Sayuri
has hardly any piece of the past. Only boards spirits sent Mr. Tanakalah held as a
memento of decrepit shacks and the smell of the sea Yoroido. Now people know him by
the name of Nitta Sayuri, a geisha district of Gion intelligent.

One time Chiyo planned escape from Gion along with her sister, Satsu. Unfortunately, in
an unlucky day that he fell from the roof and fainting. Broken hand and education at the
school geisha is stopped. When he learned his brother had run away without him, plus
news of her parents had died, Chiyo's life when it has collapsed as a whole. It has no
purpose in life and threatened Nitta okiya trapped as servants for life. Thinking about
this, Chiyo is so sad and desperate. Until one time he stood on the banks of the river
Shirakawa and cry. A 40-year-old man held out a handkerchief to her and talk to him.
Chairman Ken Iwamura, his name, spoke from the heart to him when Chiyo feels hostile
world. Chiyo then a dozen years old, fell in love for the first and last time.

Chiyo brief meeting with the Chairman bring a big change in her life. Every step he took
was to be located closer to the Chairman. Together Mameha, a geisha of Gion's most
popular in the Depression era, which later changed its name Chiyo becomes Sayuri's
struggle to become a successful geisha. Competition, friendship and betrayal and turns
his life lika coloring. All the longing and hope to be with the chairman to make
increasingly strong determination to survive and become popular geisha in Gion. Though
not chosen this life. As Mameha said, "we become a geisha is not to be happy, but
because we have no other choice."

Like a sweet orange that tasted so delicious during hot weather, a novel by Arthur Golden
is filling our thirst will be a very interesting life of a geisha. Interesting, because the
geisha known as closed and not many want to reveal his personal life in the public eye.
No wonder the launch of biographical fiction novel that shaped it invites a lot of applause
from around the world. Golden tales Sayuri pack nicely in a beautiful narrative.
Recognition of the world also increased when the "Memoirs of a Geisha" was made a
movie a big success in the market.

Realize that Sayuri has a very hard life throughout the novel. She loses her Parents in
Early Childhood, she is taken from her home, separated from her sister, and mistreated in
the okiya (geisha house) she is Brought to. He lost his parents in early childhood, she was
taken from his home, separated from her sister, and torture in okiya (geisha house) he
was taken to. After growing up, she is a successful geisha, but she is never Permitted to
follow her heart and confess her love. After growing up, he is a successful geisha, but she
was never allowed to follow his heart and claim to love him. That Might lead you to the
conclusion That even though she possesses a lot of great character traits, she always is
under a great amount of pressure and a very introverted person. Which can lead you to
the conclusion that although he has many great characters, he's always under pressure and
large numbers of people are very closed. In order to enjoy adapting Some of her skills
and traits, do not be too hard on yourself. To adapt some of their skills and enjoy nature,
do not be too hard on yourself.

characterized by her unusual and stunning gray-blue eyes and also by her clever,
imaginative, and sweet disposition. Dia ditandai dengan biasa dan menakjubkan abu-abu-

in maneuvering the intricate social and interpersonal world of geisha.
She is capable of differentiating between true and false
beauty, and values good character. Dia mampu membedakan antara keindahan sejati dan
palsu, dan nilai-nilai karakter yang baik. Her inspiration to become a great geisha comes
from her undying love for the Chairman; her suffering and desire are rewarded when the
Chairman finally becomes her danna at the end of the novel. inspirasi nya untuk menjadi

Hatsumomo Hatsumomo

her way of becoming a successful geisha. ambisi nya tirai dan membuatnya horrendously

She is

as her “little sister”, or apprentice and teaches her the many skills a geisha must master.

Mameha is
kind, cultured, refined, and worldly. Mameha adalah baik, berbudaya, halus, dan duniawi.

up, the Chairman confesses his love for Sayuri and becomes her danna . Ketika Nobu

o Themes: Tema:
Beauty
The theme of beauty is manifest in the novel through Golden's consideration
of true and false beauty. Upon her arrival in Gion, Chiyo is absolutely stunned by her first
glimpse of the exquisitely beautiful Hatsumomo. At this point in her life, she is unable to
distinguish between true inner beauty and false external beauty. Golden depicts the two
through the Hatsumomo's character: she is astonishingly lovely in physical appearance,
but her inner character is ugly. Sayuri is only able to distinguish between the two after a
military officer shows her his pistol; she recalls being awed by it's beauty, but her
appreciation for it vanished when she realized what it's true purpose was for. Sayuri links
this revelation to her perception of Hatsumomo, incapable of viewing her as beautiful
when the basis of her inner self is evil. Sayuri Beauty is also exemplified as a prominent
theme through Sayuri's intricate descriptions of kimono.

Metamorphosis Perubahan bentuk

Metamorphosis is a prominent aspect of Sayuri's life and is therefore a

reoccurring theme throughout the novel.
She makes the
metamorphosis from a simple peasant girl from a coastal fishing village to a renowned
geisha in all of Japan.
She also
undergoes the basic yet nonetheless significant metamorphosis of her name, Chiyo to
Sayuri.
Metamorphosis is a daily aspect of a geisha's life when she is preparing
to go out to entertain in the evening: Metamorfosis adalah aspek sehari-hari kehidupan
hari:

“Because, you see, when a geisha wakes up in the morning she is just like any
other woman. "Karena, Anda lihat, ketika geisha bangun di pagi hari dia sama seperti
wanita lain. Her face may be greasy from sleep, and her breath unpleasant. Wajahnya
IT may be true that
she wears a startling hairstyle even as she struggles to open her eyes; but in every other
respect she's a woman like any other, and not a geisha at all.
sekali. Only when she sits before her mirror to apply her makeup with care does she
become a geisha.
And I don't mean that this is when she begins
to look like one.
satu. This is when she begins to think like one, too.” (61) Ini adalah ketika dia mulai
berpikir seperti satu, juga). "(61

Metamorphosis invests itself in the novel through both physical and

psychological means.

Deception Penipuan

Deception is a prominent theme in the novel, and is exemplified through

Chiyo's imaginative naiveté: she deceives herself by deluding herself into thinking that
Mr. Tanaka will adopt what remains of her family and that is it possible for her and Satsu
to run away and escape Gion forever.
melarikan diri Gion selamanya. Although she may outgrow her naiveté, she doesn't
necessarily stop deceiving herself: as Sayuri, she continues to believe that she will one
day be with the Chairman, even though for a good portion of the novel the odds of this
are incredibly slim.
tipis. On a broader note, deception is the basis for geisha culture: she deceives her clients
on a daily basis when she conceals her true self and becomes whatever her clients desire
her to be.

Destiny Takdir

Destiny seems to be the explanation behind every event in Sayuri's life. Takdir
It was
destined for Mr. Tanaka to send her away to become a geisha just as it was destined that
she should encounter the Chairman that day on the bridge.
Destiny is an inevitable force in the
novel, and is self-fulfilling: when Sayuri attempts to fight her destiny with Nobu in order
to be with the Chairman, she winds up fulfilling her destiny of being with the Chairman.
In Memoirs of a Geisha , destiny
is considered an uncontrollable force: in trying to fight your destiny, you wind up
fulfilling it.
