our growth as a church. Indeed, we have a “New Song” to sing as Christians. We are
grateful to Pastor Effie and Janice Lotz for the wonderful Ladies’ Tea, where we heard
the President of AB Women speak on “Human Trafficking.” The women of TTBC will
be meeting to discuss practical things we can do to minister in Boston. Let’s continue in
2011 to sing of our Redeemer and His love for everyone!
In the first month of this New Year there are already many new beginnings. Let me
remind you of some important events in the life of our church this January:

JANUARY 2011

1. Special Business Meeting, : Sunday, January 16th: The Church Council has called for a Special
Business Meeting on Sunday, January 16th.A number of vacancies have occurred. Our Moderator has
resigned and the Vice Moderator has been acting in his absence. The Deacons have nominated Chelsa
Bailey, who has been serving as Vice Moderator, to become the new Moderator. There have also been
interim appointments made as permitted in Bylaws, Article V, section 4. The Church Council has
called for a vote on these appointments, again, as per the Bylaws.
2. “Nations in Our Neighborhood” : Saturday, January 22nd: We live in a multi-ethnic society. We
are an international church. Many of our students who work in our Christian Education Ministry are
students from overseas and studying at Gordon-Conwell (CUME). They have had experience in wit-
nessing to people of many nations who live amongst us. We need to know that mission is not only for-
eign missions, but home missions! Therefore, we are planning this Conference to engage our students
and our members to become more effective witnesses to “the nations amongst us!” We will discuss
how to reach out to those of other religious traditions and how to effectively announce the Good News
of Christ! A further schedule of events is published in this issue of Temple Tidings. We will begin
with coffee at 9:30 am, and the Conference will run to 1:00 pm.
This Conference is for everyone. Save the date and plan now to attend! This is part of our program
helping all of us to become a missionary people!
3. Martin Luther King, Jr. : Sunday, January 23rd: Tremont Temple Baptist Church has a long
history or working for human rights for all people. Abraham Lincoln spoke here. The first reading in
Boston of the Emancipation Proclamation of 1863 was read here. Our church defied Federal Law
and hid runaway slaves behind the choir loft. We believe that Christ has come to free all of humanity
and that we belong together because we belong to Christ!
I am pleased that Rev. Dr. Michael E. Haynes, former Pastor of 12th Baptist Church, and a friend of
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., will preach for us at this special celebration. Let’s come and affirm our
commitment to racial equality and justice for all in Jesus’ Name!
4. Appointment of Director of Children and Youth Ministry : In unanimous agreement with the
Church Council, I am pleased to announce the appointment of Lucrecia Rodriguez as our new
Director of Children and Youth Ministry. Lucrecia has just completed her M. Div. at Gordon-
Conwell and has been doing a wonderful work as Chair of Christian Education. Please welcome
Lucrecia with all the wonderful gifts that she brings to this Ministry. We are pleased that our Sunday
School program is beginning to experience growth.
5. A Personal Word: Janice and I will be traveling to Switzerland and Germany after the service on
December 26th. We look forward to seeing six of our grandchildren who are living there, as well as
our son, Carsten, who is Pastor in Frankfurt, and our daughter, Alena, who lives in Zurich. In order
that we might celebrate Communion together in the New Year, we will celebrate the Lord’s Supper on
Sunday, January 9th, 2011. Rev. Robins will be preaching on Sunday, January 2nd, 2011. Pastor Effie
will lead Wednesday Prayer Meeting on December 29th, 2010 and Rev. Robins on January 5th, 2011.
I have enjoyed being your Pastor this past year. We look forward to the further growth and
stabilization of our church membership in 2011. Both Janice and I are grateful for the opportunity we
have had to minister amongst you. We will share with you our hope for the future ministry of TTBC
at our specially called Business Session!
May the Peace and Joy of Christ be with you in all that you do in the coming year. May you have a
Happy New Year because of the Joy of Christ in your midst!

Yours faithfully in Christ,

Denton Lotz , Pastor

P.S. Have you made your Pledge yet? Scripture admonishes us to bring our tithes into the store-
house ! The TTBC “Covenant of Membership” reminds each of us of the requirements of being a
member: “We will faithfully support by our prayers and personal participation, by our tithes and offer-
ings, the ministries of this church, its Bible School, its home and foreign missionary programs.”
