Algebra II and Trigonometry

Chapter 5 Review Problems
1. Solve 2 x 2 ! 7 = 43 by taking square roots.

2. Solve the following by factoring.

(a) x 2 + 11x + 24 = 0 (b) x 2 + 14 x ! 15 = 0 (c) x 2 ! 19 x + 60 = 0

COMPLETING THE SQUARE REVIEW

To solve x 2 + 6 x + 5 = 0 by "completing the square" we do the following:

.
1. x 2 + 6 x + 5 = 0
2. x 2 + 6 x = !5 • subtract to put the constant on the other side.
3. x 2 + 6 x + 9 = !5 + 9 • add ( 12 6) 2 = 9 to both sides.
4 ( x + 3) 2 = 4 • rewrite the left side as a perfect square.
5. x + 3 = 2 or ! 2 • take the square root of each side.
6. x = !1 or ! 5 • solve for x .

3. Fill in the blanks to write the trinomial on the left a perfect square

x 2 ! 20 x + ____ = ( x ! ___ ) 2

4. Solve each equation by completing the square

(a) x 2 + 10 x + 9 = 0 (b) x 2 ! 8 x + 11 = 0

5. The parabola y = ( x ! 8) 2 + 7 is in vertex form. What is its vertex?

6. Follow the steps for completing the square to write each parabola below in
vertex form. Then identify the vertex of the parabola.

(a) y = x 2 + 8 x + 5

Hint: The first step is to subtract 5. Then add ___ to both sides …

(b) y = x 2 ! 2 x + 20

7. (a) Write the quadratic formula below.

(b) Use the quadratic formula to solve 6 x 2 ! x ! 12 = 0 . Simplify completely

PARABOLA REVIEW

To graph y = x 2 + 2 x ! 15 we need to find the following:

.
1. y-intercept Set x = 0 . The y-intercept (0,!15)

!b !b
2. vertex: x-coordinate The x-coordinate is . Here = !1
2a 2a

y-coordinate To find the y-coordinate of the vertex, plug the

x-coordinate (!1) into the parabolas equation

The y-coordinate is (!1) 2 + 2(!1) ! 15 = !16

So, the vertex is (!1,!16)

3. x-intercept(s) Set x = 0 and try to solve the quadratic equation you obtain.

You can solve x 2 + 2 x ! 15 = 0 by factoring or by using the quadratic formula.

You should find solutions x = 3 or ! 5 . So, the x-intercepts are (3,0) , (!5,0)

Remember A negative under the square root in the quadratic formula means
that the parabola doesnʼt cross the x-axis. It still has a graph.

4. The axis/line of symmetry is the vertical line that passes through the vertex.
The line of symmetry for this graph is x = !1 (the x-coordinate of the vertex)
8. For each parabola below, find the x intercepts, y-intercept, and the vertex.
Sketch their graphs on a separate piece of paper. Label all key points.

(a) y = x 2 ! 2 x ! 8 (b) y = ! x 2 ! 4 x + 5

9. Sketch a graph of the inequality y > x 2 + 6 x + 10 . Donʼt forget to shade.

Clearly indicate if the parabola is dashed or solid.

DISCRIMINANT REVIEW

The "discriminant" of the quadratic equation ax 2 + bx + c = 0 is the number D = b 2 ! 4ac .

It is the number that appears under the square root when you use the quadratic formula.

• If D > 0 the quadratic equation has two real solutions.

• If D = 0 , the quadratic equation has one real solution.
• If D < 0 , the quadratic equation has no real solutions (two complex solutions).

ex The discriminant of x 2 + 6 x + 5 = 0 is the number D = 6 2 " 4 ! 1 ! 5 = 16

Since 16 > 0 , the equation has two real solutions.

10. Calculate the discriminant of each equation below.

Decide if each has 2 real solutions, 1 real solution, or 2 complex solutions.

(a) x 2 + 4 x + 4 = 0

(b) 2 x 2 ! 6 x + 5 = 0

The Complex Number "i" review

We define the complex number i by i = ! 1 . It has the property that i 2 = !1 . So…

ex (!2i )(3i ) = !2 " 3 " i " i = !6i 2 = +6

ex (5i ) 2 = (5i )(5i ) = 25i 2 = !25

ex ! 9 = 9 " (!1) = 9 ! 1 = 3i
11. (a) Simplify (7i ) ! (3i )

(b) Simplify (!3i ) 2

12. Use the quadratic formula to find the complex solutions of 2 x 2 ! 6 x + 5 = 0

Simplify completely

y=4
13. Solve the system
y = ( x ! 5) 2
