Support the City in Opposing Measure J -
Attend the "Paddle Out Against Paredon" this
Saturday May 1st
Santa Barbara Channelkeeper is helping sponsor
and organize a "Paddle Out Against Paredon" this
Saturday in Carpinteria. The paddle out will
demonstrate the widespread public support for
the City of Carpinteria's opposition to Venoco
Oil's Measure J, which is on the City's June 8th
ballot. Also called "The Paredon Oil Drilling
Initiative," Measure J would change the City's
governing constitution and highjack local self-rule
in an effort to bypass the typical development
approval process for a huge slant drilling project
within city limits - a project that has been
identified to have numerous significant
environmental, health and safety concerns.
The precedent-setting language and corporate
authorship of Measure J will have negative
implications for all of California. So no matter
where you live, come join Carpinterians in saying
"No to J" by attending Saturday's event. Either
paddle out on your watercraft of choice or show your support from shore! The
Paddle Out starts at 11:00AM at the beach end of Linden Avenue. Parking is
limited so carpooling is encouraged. You can drop off your surfboards at the
end of Linden before parking, and kayaks can be deployed at Ash Street.

The RWQCB is currently updating the program that regulates agricultural

discharges to Central Coast waterways. The agricultural industry is fiercely
opposed to the changes being recommended by RWQCB staff and has mounted
a broad campaign to generate additional opposition. Therefore, it is very
important that the RWQCB hears from Central Coast citizens who support
stronger protections for our surface and groundwater resources from

10th Annual Blue Water Ball - May 22nd

Channelkeeper's annual fundraising gala, the Blue
Water Ball, will take place on Saturday, May 22nd
from 5-9 pm at the Rockwood Woman's Club in
Santa Barbara. Our Blue Water Ball will feature a
delicious organic dinner, live music, live and silent
auctions, and actress and environmental activist
Gloria Reuben as our keynote speaker. Get your

Proceeds from the event will provide critical

unrestricted funds for Channelkeeper's daily
operating activities as well as our ongoing
community outreach and advocacy efforts to
protect water quality and restore aquatic habitats
in and along the Santa Barbara Channel.

Volunteer Dockhands and Divers Needed for

Harbor Clean-up
On Saturday, May 8th, from 8 am-12
noonChannelkeeper will partner with the Santa
Barbara City Waterfront Department to conduct
the fourth annual Harbor seafloor debris clean-
up ("Operation Clean Sweep"). Please join us
by volunteering to help with this important
clean-up effort. You can help by volunteering
your time topside as dock support or as a diver
if you are SCUBA certified. Divers need to
supply their own equipment, but Channelkeeper
will provide tanks. This year we will target the
CUDA dock, City Pier and Fish Floats north and
south. Donuts, coffee and water will be
provided for volunteers. Contact us at

Student Art Show on Display April 26 - May 8 at
Kim Kieler Gallery

For the seventh year in a row, Santa Barbara

Channelkeeper has produced an ocean-themed
juried student art show, "What the Channel
Means to Me." The show features a wide
range of creative expression, from ceramics
and oil paintings to jewelry, but all the work
focuses on celebrating our coast and ocean.

The artists' reception and awards ceremony

took place on April 25th with Santa Barbara
Mayor Helene Schneider presenting the
awards. The show will remain on display until
May 8th at the Kim Kieler Gallery at 1 N. Calle
Cesar Chavez, so please come and check out
the beautiful works of art created by local
students for our show.

This year's juror was local artist Michelle

Thomas, who selected the 69 pieces in the
show from 139 entries. Work was judged on
creativity, technical skill, sense of style and interpretation of the theme.

First place went to Alexis Ireland from San Marcos High School (see her piece,
"Cousins by the Sea", shown above). For a complete list of winners and more

This year's art show sponsors were Trillium Enterprises, Santa Barbara Bank &
Trust, Montecito Frame and Gallery, the Kim Kieler Gallery and McConnell's Ice
Cream. With their generous support, it is our aim to both reward and enable
young local artists to develop their talents and continue to inspire others to care
for the marine environment through their art.

Choose to Reuse, in partnership with the City of Santa
Barbara Environmental Services Department, is hosting
a local screening of Tapped, an award-winning
documentary taking a behind-the-scenes look at the
unregulated and unseen world of an industry that aims
to privatize and sell back the one resource that ought
never to have become a commodity: our water.

From the production of plastics to the contamination of

the ocean where so many plastic bottles end up, this
inspiring documentary trails the path of the bottled
water industry and the communities that were the
unwitting chips on the table. A powerful portrait of the
lives affected by the bottled water industry, this
revelatory film features those caught at the intersection of big business and the
public's right to water.

 Stream Team - Sunday, May 2 in Goleta
Ventura CANCELED for Paddle Out

Stream Team is Channelkeeper's volunteer-

based water quality monitoring program. Every
month, volunteers join Channelkeeper staff to
test for common water quality parameters at
numerous sites in the Ventura River and Goleta
Slough watersheds. Come join us to help protect
our local waterways; we will not be sampling in
Ventura on Saturday due to the "Paddle Out
Against Paredon" but will be in Goleta on
Sunday, May 2nd. For more information, visit

Well, not literally...just virtually. Help drive awareness and action around the
pollution of our seas by plastic bags. Channelkeeper and more than 130
partners have joined Heal the Bay's online campaign called "Trash Your Friends.
