Course description
The objective of the first level course is to introduce the student to the Italian language,
covering the basic communicative tools that are useful for everyday interaction in Italy.
The course utilizes an integrated communication method that puts the student at the center of
the learning process in a cooperative relationship with the teacher. Grammatical theory will
be always connected with the practical use of the language.
The students will not only be taught the linguistic system, but will also be given strategies
and techniques that facilitate the learning process.
All of the didactic materials used throughout the course, such as textbooks and multimedia
devices, are in Italian.

Absence Policy
Attendance is very important for the continuity of class activities and it is mandatory. There
will be no unexcused absences, except in the case of illness with written doctor’s certificate.

1st absence - student will be warned.

2nd and 3rd absences - student will receive a lower grade – a deduction of 4 % for each
absence.
4 or more absences - student cannot receive a passing grade and must formally withdraw
from the course, except in the case of doctor certified illness.

Quizzes cannot be missed, but IF you miss it (even if it’s your 1st absence) you will receive 0
on the quiz and a 2% deduction from your overall final grade.

Final exams and quizzes cannot be taken early or postponed.

Exceptions to this scale may be made for extreme, unforeseen circumstances, and only at the
instructor’s discretion.

Consistently late arrival or early departure may affect your attendance grade, at your
instructor’s discretion.

Class Participation
Students are expected to actively participate and contribute to class discussion. Participation
grade requires more preparation and contribution, and if a student is not in class he/she is not
contributing or receiving the inputs of his/her classmates and teacher.
Class participation will count for 20%.

Homework
Please do all the exercises assigned every day. We will do many of these exercises together in
class. Lack of preparation will significantly lower your grade. Homework will count for 10%.

Settimana 1 Scusa come ti chiami?

Funzioni comunicative: Salutare e rispondere ai saluti. Presentare noi stessi e
presentare gli altri. Chiedere e dire il nome, l’età, la nazionalità e la
provenienza. Dire il proprio indirizzo e numero di telefono. Porre domande
relative alla generalità. Affermare, negare. Compilare un modulo anagrafico.

 Grammatica: I pronomi personali soggetto. L’uso di “tu” e “Lei”. Il presente
indicativo dei verbi della prima coniugazione:-are. Il presente indicativo dei
verbi essere,avere, abitare, chiamarsi. I numeri cardinali da 0 a 10.000. Gli
aggettivi di nazionalità. La frase affermativa, interrogativa e negativa. Gli
interrogativi: chi, come, dove, quale, quanto, da, dove. Le preposizioni: da ,a,
in.
Lessico: Nomi, nazionalità, saluti, numeri cardinali, paesi.

Settimana 2 Cosa mangi?

Funzioni comunicative: Esprimere preferenze. Fare un’ordinazione. Chiedere
il prezzo e il conto. Offrire qualcosa a qualcuno, accettare o rifiutare.
Comprendere un menù e una ricetta. Esprimere quantità.
Grammatica: Gli articoli determinativi e indeterminativi. I nomi maschili,
femminili, singolari e plurali. I verbi in –ere, -ire e alcuni verbi in –isc
(preferire).Il verbo irregolare bere. Un po’ di. Le preposizioni:di e da.
Lessico: I negozi, il cibo, i prodotti alimentari. Pesi, misure e contenitori. I
prezzi e il denaro.

Settimana 3 Quanti siete in famiglia?

Funzioni comunicative: Esprimere relazioni famigliari. Presentare il proprio
stato civile e la situazione famigliare. Presentare qualcuno. Chiedere di
identificare e descrivere alcune semplici caratteristiche fisiche e soggettive di
una persona. Esprimere il possesso.
Grammatica: I dimostrativi: questo. Gli aggettivi possessivi Gli aggettivi
qualificativi. Accordo degli aggettivi con i nomi. I nomi invariabili.
Lessico: I nomi di parentela. Gli aggettivi utili per la descrizione fisica. Le
caratteristiche soggettive.

Settimana 4 Che cosa fai di solito?

Funzioni Comunicative: Parlare delle abitudini quotidiane. Indicare ed
esprimere la frequenza di azioni quotidiane. Indicare la durata di azioni
quotidiane. Chiedere e dire l’ora. Dire i giorni della settimana e le parti della
giornata
Grammatica: Il presente indicativo dei verbi riflessivi. Il presente indicativo
dei verbi irregolari fare,andare,uscire. Alcuni avverbi di tempo (prima, poi,
nel frattempo) e di frequenza (spesso, mai, sempre).
Lessico: Gli avverbi di frequenza. Le azioni di routine. Le parti della giornata.
I giorni della settimana. L’ora.

Settimana 5 Com’è la tua casa?

Funzione comunicativa: Descrivere la propria abitazione. Localizzare oggetti
nello spazio. Leggere e comprendere un annuncio di affitto o di vendita
Grammatica: Le preposizioni semplici. Le preposizioni articolate. Le
preposizioni improprie (dietro a, davanti a, ecc.). C’è/ci sono. Gli aggettivi: i
colori, la posizione degli aggettivi. I numeri ordinali fino a 100. I numeri
cardinali da 10.000 in poi. Verbi in –care e -gare.
Lessico: L’arredamento, le stanze della casa. I colori.

Funzioni comunicative: Chiedere e dare informazioni stradali. Chiedere e dare
informazioni su orari e prezzi. Acquistare un biglietto. Leggere un biglietto del
treno. Prenotare una stanza d’albergo.
Grammatica: Presente indicativo dei verbi servili volere,potere e dovere. I
numeri moltiplicativi. Il pronome relativo che. Ci vuole/ci vogliono. Gli
interrogativi: quando. Uso di venire e andare.
Preparazione per il Midterm written and oral exams

Settimana 7 Preferisco quella rossa!

Funzioni comunicative: Indicare un oggetto e descrivere le sue caratteristiche.
Esprimere i propri gusti e le preferenze. Fare acquisti. Dire che cosa si
desidera.
Grammatica: I dimostrativi: quello. Gli aggettivi in –co, -go. L’articolo
partitivo. Piace/piacciono. I pronomi diretti atoni. Posizione dei pronomi. Uso
di vorrei.
Lessico: L’abbigliamento e gli accessori. Le taglie. I negozi. Le modalità di

Settimana 8 Com’è il tuo lavoro?

Funzioni comunicative: Parlare della propria attività professionale, indicare
professioni e luoghi di lavoro.
Indicare azioni e fatti di routine. Parlare di azioni in corso di svolgimento.
Leggere, comprendere e rispondere ad un annuncio di lavoro. Esprimere
soddisfazione e insoddisfazione. Sostenere un colloquio di lavoro.
Grammatica: Uso dei verbi sapere e conoscere. Forma perifrastica: stare
+gerundio. Formazione degli avverbi in –mente. I nomi: genere dei nomi e
particolarità. Il femminile dei nomi di professione.
Lessico:Le professioni, i luoghi di lavoro, gli strumenti di lavoro,. Le forze
dell’ordine. Formazione delle parole: alcuni suffissi dei nomi di professione(-
aio, -iere, -ista).

Settimana 9 Come hai passato le vacanze?

Funzioni comunicative: Descrivere fatti al passato. Parlare delle vacanze
trascorse. Collocare le azioni nel tempo. Comprendere un itinerario turistico.
Descrivere luoghi.
Grammatica: Il participio passato. Il passato prossimo. Uso del passato
prossimo. Accordo del participio passato. Participi regolari ed alcuni irregolari.
Espressioni di tempo.
Lessico: Espressioni di tempo al passato. Gli anni, le stagioni e i mesi. Lessico
per descrivere emozioni legate al tempo passato. Le vacanze e i luoghi di
villeggiatura.

Settimana 10 Quando ero piccolo…

Funzioni comunicative: Descrivere persone e situazioni nel passato. Collocare
le azioni e gli eventi nel tempo. Riferire fatti ed eventi delle propria storia
personale. Narrare fatti e azioni ricorrenti al passato.

Grammatica: L’indicativo imperfetto: verbi regolare e irregolari. Forme ed
uso. Le congiunzioni coordinati: e, o, ma .Le congiunzioni subordinanti:
perché, mentre, quando, poi. Uso del passato prossimo e dell’imperfetto.
Accordo dei pronomi diretti atoni con il passato prossimo. I nomi alterati:

Week 1 Communicative objectives: Greeting someone. Introducing oneself and others.

Asking and saying one’s name, age, nationality, and place of residence. Saying
one’s address and telephone number. Asking general questions. Affirming,
denying. Completing a data form.
Grammar: Personal pronouns. Working with tu and Lei. Verbs in the present
indicative tense of the First Conjugation: verbs ending in –are. Present
indicative forms of essere, abitare, chiamarsi. Numbers from 0 to 10.000.
Adjectives concerning nationality. Sentences: affirmative, interrogative and
negative. Interrogatives: chi, come, dove, quale, quanto, da, dove.
Prepositions: da, a, in.
Vocabulary: Nouns, nationality, greetings, numbers, and countries.

Week 2 Communicative objectives: Expressing likes and dislikes. Placing an order.

Asking about prices and the bill. Offering something to someone; accepting or
rejecting. Understanding menus and recipes. Expressing quantity.
Grammar: Gender of nouns, indefinite and definite articles. Verbs ending in –
ere, -ire and in –isc. The irregular verb bere. Un po’ di. Prepositions: di, da.
Vocabulary: Shops and food. Weights and measures. Prices and money.

Week 3 Communicative objectives: Talking about one’s family. Presenting one’s

marital status and family situation. Presenting someone. Identifying and
describing some simple physical and subjective characteristics of a person.
Expressing possession.
Grammar: Demonstratives: questo. Possessive adjectives. Using possessives
with family members. Adjectives. Noun-adjective agreement. Invariant nouns.
Vocabulary: Family names. Adjectives for physical description. Subjective
characteristics.

Week 4 Communicative objectives: Talking about one’s daily activities. Expressing the
frequency of daily activities. Indicating the duration of daily activities. Asking

 and telling the time of day. Saying the days of the week and the parts of the
day.
Grammar: The present indicative tense of reflexive verbs. The present
indicative tense of irregular verbs: fare, andare, uscire. Adverbs: prima, poi,
nel frattempo, spesso, mai sempre.
Vocabulary: Daily activities. Parts of the day. Weekdays. Time.

Week 5 Communicative objectives: Describing one’s home. Locating objects in space.

Reading and understanding a listing for the rent or sale of a property.
Grammar: Simple and articulated prepositions. Improper prepositions: dietro
a, davanti a, etc. C’è/ci sono. Adjectives describing colors and their position in
sentences. Ordinal numbers from 0 to 100. Cardinal numbers over 10.000.
Verbs ending in –care, -gare.
Vocabulary: Furniture, rooms in the house, colors.

Week 6 Communicative objectives: Asking and giving directions. Maps. Asking and
giving information about schedules and prices. Purchasing tickets. Reading a
train ticket. Booking a hotel room.
Grammar: Present indicative modal verbs: volere, potere, dovere. The
multiplier. The relative pronoun che. Ci vuole/ci vogliono. The interrogative
quando. The use of venire and andare.
Preparation for the written and oral Midterm Exam.

Week 7 Communicative objectives: Identifying an object and describing its

characteristics. Expressing tastes and preferences. Shopping. Communicating
what one wants.
Grammar: The demonstrative quello. Adjectives ending in –co, -go. The
partitive article. Piace/piacciono. Direct object pronouns. Position of
pronouns. Introduction of the conditional mood.
Vocabulary: Clothing, accessories, and sizes. Shops, payment methods, store
signs.

Week 8 Communicative objectives: Talking about one’s professional activities.

Indicating one’s profession and workplace. Indicating actions and habits.
Talking about activities in progress. Reading, understanding and responding to
a job vacancy. Expressing satisfaction and dissatisfaction. Job interviews.
Grammar: The use of verbs sapere and conoscere. Progressive/continuous
tense: stare + gerundio. Formation of adverbs ending in –mente. Gender of
nouns. The female nouns of professions.
