vote for this coming election, look at their whole body of work 
from the past. If you like what you see then don’t let anyone 
convince you otherwise. However, if you don’t like what you 
see chances are history will repeat itself, and that politician will 
repeat old patterns, so move on.

Community organizations should consist of people from 
all layers of society.  Community organizations should 
also be established in various districts of Statia. However 
the success of these organizations requires a number of 
factors, such as strong, skilled leadership, a stable or‐
ganization in terms of membership, participation and 
funding and an overall strategy to gain influence.

at the Secondary school on St. Eustatius. What I discov‐
ered is that it is not that the kids don’t wait to learn but 
it is more the absence of good, viable materials. Every 
student has their own way of learning whether by hear‐
ing a song, seeing a picture or by speaking about the 
subject that is being given. The approach for this would 
be for the teachers to learn how to implement all of the 
different types of learning methods within their teach‐
ing. Many people have mentioned it is not just getting 
up and going to teach and be done with it. There has to 
be a love for the profession. It has often been said that 
teaching and nursing are jobs that are done out of love  Elementary  schoolteacher at work 
for others not for the love of money or fame. 
If St. Eustatius should receive the opportunity to install 
these kind of materials for teaching, they would first 
need the finances, to make it happen and the teachers 
would need to be trained to be able to work with these 
kinds of systems/materials. Another thing also I am 
hearing lately that the children don’t know how to 
read, write etc. It is true to some extent, I find the kids 
need to be more motivated to learn how to read and to 
improve their writing skills, it is not again that they 
don’t want to, it is just that some do need the extra 
help and motivation to get them up to a certain level. 

A Smartboard: great tool for teachers (picture not made on

Here in The Netherlands we have the privilege of having 
a smart board in the class rooms. These are special elec‐
tronic boards that one can connect their laptops to and 
pull up a PowerPoint and give your lessons. Within these 
PowerPoint’s you can also insert links that take you right 
to the internet and provides better visual support to the 
students. This makes teaching so much easier and learn‐
ing so much fun. Where I did my Internship at the Gwen‐

would give them more motivation in wanting to learn 
also. This is only one example.   
  
  Deseree Houtman is studying in Holland at the Hogeschool

"Ik ben Jomanda", zegt de vrouw.
Dat treft, zegt de Duitser, ik ben goed gelo-

nen afhelpen..dan graag
Jomanda raakt zijn voorhoofd aan en
meteen houdt de pijn op.
De Duitser vertelt het verhaal aan zijn tafel-
genoten en de Engelsman gaat nu op Joman-
da af: Ik heb een ongeneeslijke reuma, door
uw aanraking zal ik genezen.
Jomanda raakt de schouder van de Engels-
man aan en hij is meteen van z'n kwaal ver-
lost.
De Engelsman vertelt zijn verhaal, maar de
Antilliaan, die geeft geen krimp.
Na een poosje komt Jomanda naar hun tafel
en vraagt aan de Antilliaan:

Waarop de Antilliaan zegt :
