PIChE Goes International @ Taipei’s APCChE Congress
True to its mission of bringing global appreciation of
chemical engineering practice to its members, a six-man
PIChE delegation attended the 13th Asia-Pacific Confedera-
tion of Chemical Engineering (APCChE) Congress at the
Howard International Center in Taipei, Taiwan this October
5-8, 2010. The National President, Engr. Cezar dela Cruz,
led the PIChE group joined by the Governing Body of the
College of Fellows: Engr. Eriberto Pineda (Chair), Dr.
Lydia Tansinsin (PRO), Dr. Nuna Almanzor (Treasurer),
and Prof. Alberto Laurito (Secretary), and Dr. Evelyn
Laurito, First Vice-President of the PIChE MMAC.
In the APCChE Executive Council meeting preceding the
Congress, Engr. Dela Cruz presented a convincing bid for
PIChE to host the 16th Congress in Manila in 2014, but the Australian bid
for Montreal as venue in 2015 prevailed. In the same meeting however, the
Council gave PIChE the priority to host the 17th Congress in 2017. In the
Education session of the Congress program, Prof. Alberto Laurito ably
presented a paper entitled “Current State of Chemical Engineering Educa-
tion in the Philippines: Moving Towards Global Comparability”, describ-
ing the collaborative efforts of the CHED’s Technical Panel for Chemical

by Rodel T. Fronda and Dyna C. Enad
Last September 25, 2010, the 3rd PIChE National Board Physical Meeting was con-
ducted at the VIP Hotel in Cagayan de Oro City, with PIChE-Cagayan de Oro as
the host chapter.
The following PIChE NBOD officers were present: Pres. Cezar De la Cruz,
Eriberto Pineda, Alberto Laurito, Reynaldo Esguerra, Susan Mamitag, Alexander
Safran, Alexander Yap, Ferdinand Zapanta, Rodel Fronda, Dyna Enad and Eloisa
Villegas. The main agenda were the updates on the preparations for the 72nd
PIChE National Convention scheduled on February 16-18, 2011 at Bacolod City, as
well as updates on the Chemical Engineering ID and on the Washington Accord.
The second activity for the morning was the Mindanao Chapters’ meeting
and working lunch, which, in addition to the national officers from the previous gathering, was attended by the presi-
dents and representatives of the Mindanao-based chapters, namely Gemma Trozo (Surigao), Maribel Blones (Davao),
Mike Villapaz (Bukidnon), Brett Laudato (SOCSARGEN), and Edwin Richard Ortiz (CDO). It provided an opportunity for
an exchange of views between the national board officers and Mindanao chapter presidents and representatives on a
number of relevant concerns, particularly in connection with the preparations and support for the next year’s conven-
tion.
On his closing remarks during the afternoon seminar program, Engr. Cezar de la Cruz inspired the participating
students and professionals with courage and enlightenment about the enduring Chemical Engineering Profession, which
is still being regarded as “the jack of all trades” in spite of the changes in the career preferences of both upcoming stu-
dents and current professionals.
A major fellowship dinner prepared by the CDO Chapter for the National Board Officers, Chapter presidents and
representatives, and invited guests was held at the Philippine Sinter Corporation Beach House on the evening of
the said date. The host chapter delighted its guests and visitors to an impressive dining in a night complete with
