Committees Play an Important Role within LMOA: On Tuesday


evening, February 1, two meetings will be held in the Terrace Room that will highlight
LMOA committees. In addition to committee members, other LMOA members who are interested in
committee activities are welcome to attend.
 At 6:30PM, the Annual Committee Orientation will be an excellent learning opportunity for committee members who want to
learn about Association resources and ways to increase effectiveness. Veteran and new committee members and chairpersons are
encouraged to attend. Presenters will include President Scott Meiss, General Manager John Korhonen and Communications Manager
Peggy Alexander.
 At 7:30PM, the Board and Committee Chairs Work Session will give each committee chair an opportunity to update the Board
on current activities, the status of projects and plans for the future. Chairpersons who are unable to attend may delegate a committee
representative. Time will be allotted for member comments on the agenda topic only before the discussion begins.

Highlights of January 27 Board Meeting


• Confirmed a consent agreement dated January 17, 2011, to authorize a request for proposal with the intent to award a contract for
design and turnkey installation of at least 48 boat docks at the Marina. The installation will replace the current Marina basin docks.
• Authorized the General Manager to complete work on the lower level of the Police/Operations building, for $12,500 from the property
transfer fee account, which was approved as part of the 2011 budget. More on this project to follow.
• Delayed approval of contracts with Watershed Services for repairs to the main lake and Tufton Lake dams until after review by LMOA
legal counsel and insurance carrier.
• Voted to form an ad hoc committee to develop a policy on memorials, bequests, gifts and endowments to enhance the community.
• Confirmed the 39th Annual Meeting of Members will be held on Sat., June 25, 2011 in the Clubhouse.
• Authorized the Water Safety Patrol to educate and assist boaters, swimmers and other users of the lake and to assist the LMPD with
enforcement of LMOA rules between Memorial Day and Labor Day 2011.
• Confirmed the date of a Board and Committee Chairs work session as Feb. 1. (See lead article for details.)
• Made committee appointments: Jo Anna Chacho to Safety & Security , Wayne Murphy to Golf and Ray Wiemer to Buildings, Roads
and Grounds. The term of Golf Committee member Barbara Senig was adjusted to end Dec. 31, 2012.
• Authorized an amendment to the contract with Digs, Inc. for repairs to the Acres pond to modify the completion day to April 15, 2011.

Petition Packets Available Next Week: At its Jan. 27 meeting, the Board confirmed that the 39th Annual Meeting of LMOA
Members will be held on Sat., June 25, 2011. During the election, members will vote to fill three vacancies on the Board and vote on
any Board or member proposals that may be properly brought up for vote. At least four candidates are needed to provide choices for
the member vote to fill the Board vacancies. The Bylaws require that member proposals meet certain criteria to qualify for member
vote. Both candidates and sponsors of member proposals must complete the petition process by the deadline of March 28.

President Scott Meiss to Host TV Program, “What It Means to Be a Director,” for locally-produced community news and
information show, “This Week at the Lake.” The program will be shown on cable channel 10(977) beginning on Feb. 3 at 7PM and run
daily at 9AM and 7PM through Feb. 9. President Meiss will welcome outgoing directors Mike Harrison and Ray Gott and former director
Ed Seroskie, who will share their experiences on the Board and talk about the rewards of community service.

Congratulations to Chris Fairchild, who was appointed Rivanna District Supervisor by the Fluvanna Board of Supervisors
on Jan. 20. He takes the seat that was vacated by Gene Ott at the end of 2010. Chris is a familiar face in the County. He grew up at
Lake Monticello and lives here with this family. Chris is CEO of National Filter Service, which is located at Carysbook, and is active
within the County on many levels. We welcome Chris and look forward to working with him toward an even better Fluvanna.

Pasta for Pets: The Eagles Nest will host a fundraiser for the Fluvanna SPCA on Mon., Feb. 7, from
5 to 8PM. 20% of sales will be donated to the SPCA. Prices for pasta, small salad, garlic bread and
beverage start at $10. All welcome to enjoy a great meal and help our furry friends at the same time.
Volunteers Needed for Community Fishing Pier Construction: Efforts are underway to identify and organize
volunteers who want to participate in the construction of the Community Fishing Pier, scheduled to begin in March. Persons interested
in participating as team members, team leaders, overall project supervisor or performing various support functions are encouraged to
register now. Letters were mailed this week to those who have expressed their interest and provided contact information in the past. To

Get Out of the House! A special flyer being delivered to mailbox cubbyholes this weekend will highlight two great
programs taking place in early February. The flyer will detail the following events:
 Gardening for Birds, 7PM on Thurs., Feb. 10, in the Terrace Room. Dr. William H. D. Leaning, a retired veterinarian and
passionate nature photographer, will present a pictorial diary of the birds, butterflies, insects and other critters he has encountered and
give tips on planting and landscaping to attract more birds. This free program will be broadcast live on LMOA’s cable TV channel 10 on
Feb. 10 at 7PM, then repeated at 9AM and 7PM daily through Feb. 16. Sponsored by the LMOA Wildlife Committee.
 Love Your Lake, 10AM to 12N, Sat., Feb. 12, in the Terrace Room. The Lake Health Education Group is sponsoring this free
interactive fun fair on how to care for our lake for Lake kids from kindergarten through middle school age. VA Museum of Natural
History educator Nancy Newman will speak at 10AM sharp about the animals that inhabit or depend on our lake, ponds and streams.
Other activities will include a puppet show, crafting your own “Love Your Lake” Valentine, games, displays, demonstrations.

December 2010 Police/Security Report


Police Chief Tom Boisvert reports the following December statistics for both Police and Security:
Police: Agency assists – 20; court – 10; investigations/follow up – 39; LMOA building security – 15; directed patrols – 297 (radar,
barcodes, gate watches, ECC notices, etc.); incidents/events – 350 (suspicious, officer/fire/rescue assists, resident assists/welfare
checks/lockouts, etc.); offense activity – 39 (gate arm breaks, larceny, possession, etc.); rule violations – 66 (dogs barking, loose
dogs/cats, parking, etc.); traffic enforcement – 168 (speeding, equipment, registration, license tags, etc.). 149 Police shifts with 8
officers.
Security: Main Gate, guest/vendor activity: Vehicles authorized – 19,135 (av 617/day); vehicles entered – 13,854 (av 447/day); phone
calls – 2,643 (av 85/day); database updates – 123 (av 4/day). Barcode gate entries (Dec. 8 – 21): Ashlawn (Main) – 39,832 (av
1,660/day); Riverside – 25,735 (av 1,072/day); Fairway (Slice) –unavailable; Falcon Hills (Turkeysag) – 61,340 (av 2,556/day); Tufton –
57,498 (av 2,396/day). Total entries for December: 184,405 (av 7,684/day).

Golf Instruction
Winter Golf Seminars for men and women, 10 to 11:15AM on Tuesdays, Feb. 8, 15, 22 and March 1 in the Crofton Room at the Pro

The Indoor Practice Facility is up and running at the Marina. Thirty-minute indoor lessons are available by appointment for just $10,

• GARDEN PLOTS STILL AVAILABLE: The Fluvanna Community Garden at Pleasant Grove has plots available for 2011. If you like
to garden but don’t have the space or sunlight needed, this is a great alternative and an opportunity to meet other gardeners. Water
