Dear Parish Family,
Peace and all good!
In this week’s Gospel reading from St. Matthew (5.:1-
12), we meet Jesus early on in his public ministry. In
this passage, Jesus announces His program—his
agenda and intentions—to all the world. It is, in a way,
his State of the Union address. But it is totally unlike
any speech ever given by a politician or statesman of
any description.
In this teaching, which we call “the Beatitudes”, Jesus
firmly establishes his conviction that, despite any and
every obstacle, God’s will for justice and equity will be
realized in his Kingdom. He reassures each and every
one of us that God identifies with our struggles and our
suffering. He tells us that God will never forget or
abandon us.
Jesus shows us that these “be- attitudes”—these
“attitudes of being” are not just sentimental or pious
platitudes, but part and parcel of both a spiritual vision
and reality. He demonstrates their power and
importance through his own life, suffering, death—and
triumph. The mystery of evil-- of injustice,
discrimination, violence and hatred of every kind—is
overcome by the Pascal Mystery. The God who made
us will never abandon us.
This week, we celebrate Catholic Schools Week
throughout the United States. We are proud of our
Catholic educational system—the oldest and largest
private instructional network of its type in the entire
world. Many of us, myself included, are beneficiaries
of Catholic education. For more than 200 years,
Catholic schools— staffed by dedicated laypeople and
religious alike—have provided millions of children with
a faith-based, Christ-centered education which has
enriched their lives and through them, our
entire society.
Today, we salute the students, teachers, and staff of
our parish school, Old Mission Montessori. For nearly
100 years—first through the Little Flower Academy
(with the Precious Blood Sisters) and, since 1976 with
the faculty of OMMS, children from the parish and
Mission have had access to a quality Catholic
education. At present, our parish school, under the
leadership of Mrs. Wanda King and her incredible staff,
has some 225 students, 70% of whom are from parish
families. Incredibly, Old Mission Montessori is financed
almost entirely through tuition and considerable
“sweat equity” provided by parents and community
members.
We thank the Lord for our parish school and ask that
you help us continue our commitment to its vision and
mission through another century. Let us keep our
school in prayer. And many thanks to all who
contribute time, talent, and treasure, to its continuing
success.

Small Christian Communities

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
New Bingo Volunteers are urgently needed to help out
now on Wednesdays and Saturdays. The only
requirements are: 18 and older, friendly smile, love to
welcome Seniors, walking and standing needed to cashier,
verify and distribute prizes to our winners. Bingo experts
or novices welcome.

School Notes
Spring Cleaning?
Our Old Mission Montessori School is looking
for your “gently” used household items for
our annual Christmas in July fundraiser. We
accept new and used items, with the
exception of clothing and shoes. Donations
may be dropped off at the school between the hours of 8:00
a.m. and 3:00 p.m.

All proceeds go directly to our Parish School. We thank you

The Annual Fashion Show Luncheon

Prayer Formation & Opportunities
CENTERING PRAYER: is a renewal of the rich
tradition of contemplative prayer in the
Christian Church. It is designed to reduce
obstacles to an intimate personal relationship
with God. Our centering prayer group meets every
Wednesday evening from 7:00-8:30 p.m. for prayer and
instruction in Rm. #12 in the McKeon Ctr. For additional

INTERCESSORY PRAYER: our parishioners have the
opportunity to write their needs and blessings in the
Intercessory Prayer books that are located in the Serra
Center and the Parish Chapel. Members of this ministry meet
each Saturday, from 8:15-9:00 a.m. in Rm. 209 to pray for all
members and the intentions written by the parishioners in
the books. Members may also pray at home. Anyone can be
part of this ministry: shut-ins, retired, etc. For further

In his letter to the Corinthians, St. Paul reminds us that all of
us are called to participate in the work of the Church. There
can be no excuses. We cannot say that we are not wise
enough, powerful enough or smart enough. We cannot say
that we do not have the time, the talents or the skills. God
can use each of us. All we have to do is offer our humble
lives to Him and then be willing to follow where He leads.

Obedience of Faith

Our response to God is called the ‘obedience of faith.’ What
does this mean in today’s Church? Is there a conflict between
obedience and reason? How can a thinking modern person
give faithful assent?

Second Lecture in Series on Old Mission

 DEL ESCRITORIO DEL PARROCO…
Querida Familia Parroquial,
¡Paz y todo bien!
En la lecturas del Evangelio de esta semana, de Mateo (5:1-
12), nos encontramos con Jesús en su ministerio público. En
este pasaje, Jesús nos anuncia Su programa, Su agenda y Sus
intenciones para todo el mundo. Es algo así como su dinero a
su Estado de la Unión. Pero es totalmente diferente a cual-
quier discurso dado por cualquier político o funcionario esta-
tal de cualquier descripción.
En esta enseñanza, la cual llamamos “las Bienaventuranzas”,
Jesús establece firmemente su convicción de que, a pesar de
cualquier obstáculo, la voluntad de Dios sobre justicia y equi-
dad se realizarán en Su Reino. El nos asegura a cada uno de
nosotros que Dios se identifica con nuestras luchas por nues-
tro sufrimiento. El nos dice que Dios nunca se olvidará de
nosotros ni nos abandonará.
Jesús nos muestra que en la enseñanza, que llamamos actitu-
des o dichas de los seres humanos, estas “actitudes de ac-
tuar” no son dichos sentimentales solamente, sino parte de
ambas; de la unión espiritual y de la realidad. El demuestra el
poder y la importancia de éstas a través de su vida, de su
sufrimiento, de su muerte y de triunfo. El misterio del mal de
la injusticia, de la violencia de cualquier odio—es vencido por
el Misterio Pascual. El Dios que nos hizo nunca nos abando-
nará.
Esta semana nosotros alabaremos la Semana de las Escuelas
Católicas a través de los Estados Unidos. Nosotros estamos
orgullosos de nuestro sistema de educación Católica—el más
antiguo y es la red educativa privada más antigua y más gran-
de de este tipo del mundo entero. Muchos de nosotros, in-
cluyéndome yo, somos beneficiarios de la educación Católi-
ca. Por más de 200 años, las escuelas Católicas—dirigidas por
laicos y/o religiosos—han provisto a millones de niños una
educación basada en la fe y centrada en Cristo la cual ha enri-
quecido sus vidas y a través de ellos, a nuestra sociedad en-
tera.
Hoy, nosotros saludamos a nuestros estudiantes, maestros, y
al personal de nuestra escuela Montessori de la Misión Vieja.
Por alrededor de 100 años, primero a través de la academia
“Little Flower” (con las Hermanas de la Sangre Preciosa) y
desde 1976 con la facultad de la Escuela Montessori de la
Misión Vieja han tenido acceso a una educación Católica y de
calidad. Actualmente, nuestra escuela parroquial, bajo el
liderato de la Sra. Wanda King y de su personal increíble,
tiene unos 225 estudiantes, de los cuales el 70% proviene de
familias parroquiales.

La Escuela Montessori, increíblemente, está financiada casi
totalmente a través de las matrículas y por donaciones con-
siderables de trabajo provisto por los padres y por miembros
de la comunidad.

Clases de Música y Liturgia con el
Nuevo Director de Alabanza
Si usted ha estado esperando una opor-
tunidad para crecer como músico: cantan-
te, instrumentalista o arreglista ¡ha llegado
su momento! Este llamado es para todos
aquellos interesados en aprender más de la
música escrita en notas y técnicas de canto. También, habrá
un enfoque en los arreglos musicales que incluyen el piano
básico y la guitarra básica. Este curso será diseñado para
incorporar una mezcla de clases musicales con el enfoque en
música litúrgica, cuya implementación será en la Misa de las
12:00 del mediodía de los domingos. La misma está progra-
mada para llevarse a cabo los martes a las 7:00 p.m. y será
requerido estar en la Misa de las Doce. Todos serán bienve-
nidos independientemente del nivel de talento. Lo que si
importará es el nivel de interés y profesionalismo. Por favor,
