devekioed into a chemistry laboratory.
GENERAL CHEMISTRY
1. A chemical compound is a substance consisting of two or more different elements
chemically bonded together in a fixed proportion by mass.
2. A chemical element is a type of atom that is distinguished by its atomic number; that
is, by the number of protons in its nucleus.
6. Allotropy is the property of some chemical elements to be able to take two or more
different forms, where the atoms are arranged differently by chemical bonds.
7. Chemistry is the science concerned with the composition, structure, and properties of
matter, as well as the changes it undergoes during chemical reactions.
8. Electron transfer (ET) is the process by which an electron moves from one atom or
molecule to another atom or molecule. ET is a mechanistic description of the
thermodynamic concept of redox, wherein the oxidation states of both reaction partners
change.
9. Inorganic chemistry is the branch of chemistry concerned with the properties and
behavior of inorganic compounds
11. Metathesis is a bimolecular process involving the exchange of bonds between the two
reacting chemical species, which results in the creation of products with similar or identical
bonding affiliations.
13. Organic chemistry is a discipline within chemistry which involves the scientific study
of the structure, properties, composition, reactions, and preparation (by synthesis or by other
means) of chemical compounds consisting primarily of carbon and hydrogen, which may
contain any number of other elements, including nitrogen, oxygen, the halogens as well as
phosphorus, silicon and sulfur
15. Phase is a set of states of a macroscopic physical system that have relatively uniform
chemical composition and physical properties.
16. Redox (shorthand for reduction/oxidation reaction) describes all chemical reactions
in which atoms have their oxidation number (oxidation state) changed.
18. The atom is the smallest unit of an element that retains the chemical properties of that
element.
Technical English 1
Projects for 1st Semester 2011
19. The boiling point of a liquid is the temperature at which the vapor pressure of the
liquid equals the environmental pressure surrounding the liquid.
20. The electron is a fundamental subatomic particle that carries a negative electric
charge. It is a spin ½ lepton that participates in electromagnetic interactions, and its mass is
approximately 1 / 1836 of that of the proton.
21. The International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) is an international
non-governmental organization established in 1919 devoted to the advancement of
chemistry.
22. The melting point of a solid is the temperature range at which it changes state from
solid to liquid.
23. The neutron is a subatomic particle with no net electric charge and a mass slightly
larger than that of a proton.
24. The oxidation state is an indicator of the degree of oxidation of an atom in a chemical
compound. The formal oxidation state is the hypothetical charge that an atom would have if
all bonds to atoms of different elements were 100% ionic.

Projects for 1st Semester 2011
Objective:
Show that any E-Commerce web site needs to have some basic structure in order
to be successful. A good E-Commerce website for example should have database
information, customer database, graphic catalog showing product information as
price, stock number, etc. So the student will need to explain which is this basic
structure and explain it to the class.
Teaching Activity:
The students will show through a video they have developed the
parts of the E-Commerce site. While the video is showing how
they are navigating through the site, they will be telling to the
class in which parts the website consists. They will need to
explain why each part is needed and which its function is.
Vocabulary:
Transaction:
An agreement between a buyer and a seller to exchange an asset for payment.
E-tailing:
Is the selling of retail goods on the Internet. Short for "electronic retailing," and used in Internet
discussions as early as 1995, the term seems an almost inevitable addition to e-mail, e-business, and e-
commerce. E-tailing is synonymous with business-to-consumer transaction.
Website:
A related collection of web pages on the Internet, comprising of files that are organized into a
hierarchy. Each file or document contains text or graphics that appear as digital information on a
computer screen.

VOCABULARY # 1
1) Acetylene (Acetileno): It is the primary fuel for oxy-fuel welding and is the
fuel of choice for repair work and general cutting and welding.
3) Arc Welding (Soldadura por Arco Eléctrico): A process that uses a welding
power supply to create an electric arc between an electrode and the base
material to melt the metals at the welding point.
11) Flux (Flux): Paste applied to copper pipes and fittings before soldering to
help the fusion process and prevent oxidation.
12) Gas Hoses (Mangueras de Gas): Flexible pipes for conveying a gas. The
hose is usually a double-hose design, meaning that there are two hoses joined
together. The oxygen hose is green and the fuel (normally acetylene) hose is
red.
14) Neutral Flame (Llama Neutral): Type of Flame most generally used when
welding or cutting. The welder uses the neutral flame as the starting point for
all other flame adjustments. This flame is attained when welders, as they
slowly open the oxygen valve on the torch body, first see only two flame zones.
At that point, the acetylene is being completely burned in the welding oxygen
and surrounding air.
15) Oxidizing Flame (Llama Oxidante): It occurs when the ratio of oxygen to
acetylene required for a neutral flame has been changed to give an excess of
oxygen. This flame type is observed when welders add more oxygen to the
neutral flame. This flame is the hottest one.
18) Slag (Escoria): The nonmetallic product resulting from the interaction of
flux and impurities in the smelting and refining of metals.
19) Smelting (Fundición): The process of separating iron from iron ore by the
application of high, sustained heat in the presence of a fluxing material.
20) Torch (Soplete): A device used to create heat that is hotter than the
melting points of many metals via a flame fueled with propane, butane, or a
combination of acetylene and oxygen.
Technical English 1
Projects for 1st Semester 2011
22) Welding (Soldadura): The heating of two metal surfaces until they melt
and fuse together.
23) Welding Helmet (Careta): These are headgear used when performing
certain types of welding to protect the eyes, face and neck from flash burn,
ultraviolet light, sparks and heat.
