chemically bonded together in a fixed proportion by mass.

2. A chemical element is a type of atom that is distinguished by its atomic number; that
is, by the number of protons in its nucleus.

3. A chemical substance is a material with a definite chemical composition. It is a

concept that became firmly established in the late eighteenth century after work by the
chemist Joseph Proust on the composition of some pure chemical compounds such as basic
copper carbonate.

4. A mole is the amount of a substance that contains as many elementary entities

(atoms, molecules or ions) as there are atoms in 0.012 kilogram (or 12 grams) of carbon-12,
where the carbon-12 atoms are unbound, at rest and in their ground state.

5. A molecule is defined as a sufficiently stable electrically neutral group of at least two

atoms in a definite arrangement held together by very strong chemical bonds .
Technical English 1
Projects for 1st Semester 2011

Neutralization occurs when an acid reacts with an equal amount of a base. A neutralization
reaction creates a solution of salt and water.

13. Organic chemistry is a discipline within chemistry which involves the scientific study
of the structure, properties, composition, reactions, and preparation (by synthesis or by other
means) of chemical compounds consisting primarily of carbon and hydrogen, which may
contain any number of other elements, including nitrogen, oxygen, the halogens as well as
phosphorus, silicon and sulfur

14. Oxidation describes the loss of electrons by a molecule, atom or ion.

15. Phase is a set of states of a macroscopic physical system that have relatively uniform
chemical composition and physical properties.

VOCABULARY # 1
1) Acetylene (Acetileno): It is the primary fuel for oxy-fuel welding and is the
fuel of choice for repair work and general cutting and welding.

2) Alternating Current AC (Corriente Alterna): An electric current whose

direction reverses cyclically, as opposed to direct current, whose direction
remains constant. The usual waveform of an AC power circuit is a sine wave, as
these results in the most efficient transmission of energy.

3) Arc Welding (Soldadura por Arco Eléctrico): A process that uses a welding
power supply to create an electric arc between an electrode and the base
material to melt the metals at the welding point.

4) Carbonizing Flame (Llama Carburizante): Type of flame produced due to

an excess of acetylene. This flame is characterized by three flame zones; the
hot inner cone, a white-hot "acetylene feather", and the blue-colored outer
cone. This is the type of flame observed when oxygen is first added to the
burning acetylene.

5) Cutting Torch (Soplete Cortador): It is used to cut metal. Oxygen is

combined with the acetylene in the torch, which produces a high temperature
flame. It can be identified by having three pipes that go to a 90 degree nozzle
and by the oxygen-blast trigger that provides oxygen to blast away material
while cutting.

6) Direct Current DC (Corriente Directa): Unidirectional flow of electric

charge. Direct current is produced by such sources as batteries,
thermocouples, solar cells, and commutator-type electric machines of the
dynamo type.

7) Electric Arc (Arco Eléctrico): An electrical breakdown of a gas which

produces an ongoing plasma discharge, resulting from a current flowing
through normally nonconductive media such as air.

8) Electric Charge (Carga Eléctrica): a fundamental conserved property of

some subatomic particles, which determines their electromagnetic interaction.

9) Electric Current (Corriente Eléctrica): The rate at which electric charge

travels through a conductor. It is measured in amperes.
Technical English 1
Projects for 1st Semester 2011

10) Electrode (Electrodo): Usually a metallic conductor which serves the

purpose of conducting electric charge carriers into a liquid, into a gas, into a
vacuum or on to the surface of a solid body.

11) Flux (Flux): Paste applied to copper pipes and fittings before soldering to
help the fusion process and prevent oxidation.

12) Gas Hoses (Mangueras de Gas): Flexible pipes for conveying a gas. The
hose is usually a double-hose design, meaning that there are two hoses joined
together. The oxygen hose is green and the fuel (normally acetylene) hose is
red.

13) Goggles (Lentes Protectores): Forms of protective eyewear that usually

enclose or protect the eye area in order to prevent particulates, water or
chemicals from striking the eyes.

14) Neutral Flame (Llama Neutral): Type of Flame most generally used when
welding or cutting. The welder uses the neutral flame as the starting point for
all other flame adjustments. This flame is attained when welders, as they
slowly open the oxygen valve on the torch body, first see only two flame zones.
At that point, the acetylene is being completely burned in the welding oxygen
and surrounding air.

15) Oxidizing Flame (Llama Oxidante): It occurs when the ratio of oxygen to
acetylene required for a neutral flame has been changed to give an excess of
oxygen. This flame type is observed when welders add more oxygen to the
neutral flame. This flame is the hottest one.

16) Oxy-fuel Welding (Soldadura Autógena): Is a process that uses fuel

gases (commonly acetylene) and oxygen to weld or cut metals.

17) Regulator (Regulador): Apparatus used to control pressure from the

tanks by reducing pressure and regulating flow rate.

18) Slag (Escoria): The nonmetallic product resulting from the interaction of
flux and impurities in the smelting and refining of metals.

19) Smelting (Fundición): The process of separating iron from iron ore by the
application of high, sustained heat in the presence of a fluxing material.

20) Torch (Soplete): A device used to create heat that is hotter than the
melting points of many metals via a flame fueled with propane, butane, or a
combination of acetylene and oxygen.
Technical English 1
Projects for 1st Semester 2011

21) Welder Gloves (Guantes de Soldador): Special type of glove made of

thick leather in order to protect the hands from high temperatures due to
welding.

22) Welding (Soldadura): The heating of two metal surfaces until they melt
and fuse together.

23) Welding Helmet (Careta): These are headgear used when performing
certain types of welding to protect the eyes, face and neck from flash burn,
ultraviolet light, sparks and heat.

24) Welding Power Supply (Fuente de Poder para Soldar): It is a device

that provides an electrical current to perform welding, for example:
transformer, inverter, generator, alternator, etc.

25) Welding Torch (Soplete Soldador): Apparatus used to weld metals. It

can be identified by having only one or two pipes running to the nozzle and no
oxygen-blast trigger.
