sales of high quality wire fencing for
over 25 years. Their stock fencing is
all made with truly centreless cores
which allows for an easy roll out and
deep crimps in the horizontal wires
to allow for erection, expansion and
contraction. Their most significant
innovation has been to manufacture all
their barbed wire and stockfencing from
2Life wire which is guaranteed to last
at least twice as long as wire heavily
galvanised to BS EN 10244 Class A.
They are the only UK manufacturer
to offer wire fencing made from such
a high quality wire.

All of the Estate Brand High Tensile

fencing is also manufactured with 4Life
top and bottom wires in addition to
the factory fitted Gripples on each roll.
It is accepted that these two wires
undergo the most work in a fence
from a weather corrosion viewpoint.
This wire is also made with a Zinc/
Aluminium Alloy coating, but with a
greater coating and so is guaranteed
to offer 4 times the life of heavily
galvanised wire.

The increase in the specification of

these wires, is at no increased cost to
the consumer. The aim is to reduce the
cost to the farmer and contractor alike
offering a high quality fence, with ease
of erection and now an even longer
guarantee on the life of the wire with
the High Tensile fencing.

Currently there are massive increases

in cost in steel due to cost increases in
raw materials such as coke; and also
cost increases in the price of energy
and fuel. The price of steel is rising so
now more than ever it is cost effective
to use Estate products as they will
give a longer life, but also will be easy,
quick and reliable to erect.

THE YEARS CONTINUE TO BE

KIND TO BRENWOOD FENCING
LUCIE CARTER CATCHES UP WITH COMMERCIAL DIRECTOR GRANT BULMAN
Almost five years ago we travelled up
to Sunderland to meet the team at
Brenwood Fencing; it was 2007 and
the industry was booming. The term
‘credit crunch’ was barely heard of,
and the dreaded recession experienced
in the 80’s was very much a thing
of the past.

Now we all know what happened

next....

2008 went on to see the country’s

most damaging recession ever, as
the banks went into crisis mode and
the government proposed mammoth
spending cuts across the board.

For Brenwood Fencing however the

recession was a mere hiccup, inevitably
things needed to be tightened at the
company but it wasn’t all doom and
gloom. In fact Commercial Director
Grant Bulman insists that standards
were maintained and that things we’re
strangely on the up: “2007 was a very
good year for us, obviously things
changed as the recession took its toll
but we have actually managed to hold
onto our already-impressive turnover of
around one and a half million pounds
each year.”

The successful team behind Brenwood

Fencing has, since its founding in 1992
consisted of Grant himself, Managing
Director David Grierson and Contracts
Director Chris Murray, and not forgetting as the saying goes, the rest is history. In such a price driven market it comes Tyneside council for example, is on a day

Its clear when meeting Grant that
Brenwood Fencing doesn’t take anything

with their long-time suppliers IAE and

the two companies have worked hand

Grant Bulman their excellent service and top quality
products.

Likewise, Brenwood’s impeccable

service to their customers is second
to none: “We will always give advice
where needed. If for instance customers
come to us with the idea of using the
incorrect type of fence, we will always
show them where they’re going wrong
and will recommend cost effective
options. We design and build most
of our own products, so that only the

And rightly so.

Fifty years on and going strong

Victoria Poolman meets Darren and Mike Wateridge of New Forest Fencing
Started up by David Wateridge in 1963,
New Forest Fencing came from humble
beginnings – a one-man band trading
from a shed outside his parent’s pub
in Lyndhurst. But nearly fifty years
on, the name has become quite the
success story, as it welcomes the
third generation of Wateridges into
the family firm.

Since David and wife Jackie retired

from the business in 1990, sons Darren
and Mike have taken over the reins
and made some significant changes
– splitting the company into two: the
merchant’s side and the contracting side.
These then came under the umbrella
of the NFF Walden Group, which also
includes David and Jackie’s fishery up
in Salisbury.

Mike tells me:

“Our best move was installing a pressure

treatment facility in the late 80s. I
remember my father finding relying on
others for treatment a real stumbling
block, and it’s nice to have complete
control of our own materials.
