OPNET Introduction
Open OPNET Modeler v14.5

If you have never used OPNET Modeler before you should complete the Basic
Tutorials: Introduction and Small Internetworks

You will create 3 projects each containing 2 separate scenarios:

• UMTS containing Hard Handover and Soft Handover
• WLAN containing PCF and DCF
• Zigbee containing mesh routing and tree routing

You will create these scenarios, specify the statistics that are required, simulate the
systems, collect and then analyse the results. Your assignment given in the
assignment brief will be to report on one of the experiments

Experiment 1 - UMTS Hard versus Soft Handover

Objectives
• Create UMTS Hard Handover scenario
• Create UMTS Soft Handover scenario
• Specify statistics to collect
• Run simulation
• Compare Results with theoretical predictions

Instructions
1) Create a new directory and make that the preferred directory for saving your
projects.
2) Create a new project by File->New and choose Project, then click OK.

3) Choose a suitable name for your project such as MCCS_UMTS and unclick the
Startup Wizard check box as shown:

4) Choose Scenarios->Scenario Components->Import:

12) Choose Scenarios->Manage Scenarios and click on <uncollected> and change to

<collect> for both scenarios and also the simulation duration to 350 seconds.

13) Both hard and soft handover simulations will then run showing

14) Click View Details to see the progress of the simulations, this may take a few
minutes on first running the simulations as the process models must be compiled:

15) When the simulation has finished click Close to close all the simulation windows
and return to the original scenario.

16) We will now some results, click DES->Results->View Results…

19) You can zoom in on or export to excel for later editing when you do not have
access to OPNET software..

20) Repeat steps 20-22 for Object Statistics->UE_0->UMTS UE RLC/MAC (PER

PHY CHANNEL)->Uplink Transmission Power (dBm)[4] also choose the results
to be displayed As-Is this time.

Questions
• What is the topology of the system that you are simulating?

• Can you define what is happening within these two simulations?

• What is the difference between a hard and soft handover?

• What can you tell from these graphs, which type of handover is better,
explain your reasons?

• View and collect any other results you think you will find useful for
further work.

Experiment 2 - WLANs performance of PCF versus

DCF
Objectives
• Create WLAN PCF_vs_DCF scenario
• Specify statistics to collect
• Run simulation
• Compare Results with theoretical predictions

Instructions
1) Create a new project called MCCS_WLAN and create one scenario PCF_DCF
2) Import PCF_ DCF scenarios from WLAN using Scenarios->Scenario
Components->Import
3) Collect the following statistics (see the next page):

Info: Global statistics take overall statistics for nodes and links, whilst node and link
statistics take the same statistic for a particular node or link.

4) Change simulation time to 1minute

5) View the results for different NODE statistics such as:
