CCNA Discovery Server v2.0

ƒ Live CD that provides network services in an isolated

lab environment, disconnected from the Internet
ƒ Offers great flexibility to enrich the learning experience
ƒ Network services provided
FTP Telnet SSH SMTP Web Server
DNS IMAP POP3 DHCP Streaming Video

ƒ CCNA® Discovery Server is required to complete many

of the labs in the CCNA Discovery series
ƒ Runs on most PCs with minimal hardware requirements

CCNA Discovery Server v2.0
Additional Information/Notes

ƒ Discovery Server is designed to match the Discovery

curriculum and Eagle Server is for the Exploration
curriculum
ƒ Discovery Server is the only officially supported server
for Discovery curriculum
ƒ You may use any server for the labs, but they may
require some changes for the intended lab results
ƒ Discovery Server can also be installed on a computer
or run in a virtual machine. Discovery ICG has
instructions on how to perform a Windows or Linux
install

Additional Information/Notes

ƒ VMware can be used to run Discovery Server either as

a “Live CD” or as a customized installation into a virtual
machine
ƒ Eagle Server has a virtual machine image that can be
downloaded from Academy Connection, but Discovery
Server does not
ƒ VMware software can be downloaded from
http://www.vmware.com

What Is a Live CD?

ƒ A LiveCD, Live CD or LiveDistro is a computer

operating system that is executed upon boot without
installation to a hard drive
ƒ The term “live” derives from the fact that these
distributions are a complete, functioning and
operational operating system residing on the
distribution medium
ƒ A LiveDistro does not alter the operating system or files
already installed on the computer hard drive unless
instructed to do so
ƒ LiveDistros often include mechanisms and utilities for
more permanent installation
BRK-119T
Discovery Server © 2008 Cisco Systems, Inc. All rights reserved. Cisco Public 8
What Is a Live CD?

ƒ The default option is to allow the user to return the

computer to its previous state when the LiveDistro
is ejected and the computer is rebooted
ƒ It is able to run without permanent installation by
placing the files that typically would be stored on
a hard drive into a RAM disk

Cautions

ƒ RAM is critical; the more RAM the better

the performance
ƒ All hardware must be Linux compatible
ƒ The server probably will not boot on a machine
that uses a USB keyboard

Creating the CD

ƒ Burn the CD to disc using a CD authoring program

ƒ Do not drag the iso image to a CD
ƒ Image files contain a directory structure, files and boot
tracks which are not created by copying the intact file
to a disc
ƒ Many CD authoring programs are available that will
burn an iso file into a CD
ƒ ImgBurn is a donationware utility you can use to burn
the CD
http://www.imgburn.com/

Discovery Server © 2008 Cisco Systems, Inc. All rights reserved. Cisco Public 27
Booting the Machine with the Live CD

ƒ Change the BIOS boot order to boot from

the CDROM drive first
ƒ Some computers require a BIOS change while others
use a function key when you start the computer
ƒ Terminate the NIC card by connecting it to a switch,
router or PC using the appropriate cable
ƒ Insert the Discovery Server CD and reboot the machine

BRK-119T
