The specialties that will you will learn includes demonstrating the variety of modern
medical practice. Each specialty has considered carefully what every doctor should
know about their subject. The result is a rotation which exposes you to 15 subjects.
The lecturers are clear that whatever kind of medicine you practice in the future,
you will require the skills and knowledge on offer in these modules at some time in
your career.
Aims
• To learn core skills and knowledge relevant to specialties.
• To understand the practice and scope of specialties which may be unfamiliar
• To broaden the perspective of students by increasing their awareness of the
variety of medical and surgical practice.

• To become competent in taking a history and performing an examination
appropriate to common presentations of conditions managed by specialties
• To identify, assess and manage common emergencies in each specialty
• To know which conditions are appropriately referred to each specialty and with
what degree of urgency
• To be aware of practices within specialties which have important consequences
for patients’ general medical care
• To witness specialist practitioners at work and understand their roles with
multi-disciplinary teams
• To understand the contribution of the specialties to the body of medical
knowledge
Structure of Modules
• 5 groups of 6 weeks rotation
• 23/24 students will undertake each module at one time.
• A mixed timetable of seminars, small group teaching, clinical attachments,
wards work, clinical demonstrations and visits.
• Students will be divided into smaller groups when appropriate to the teaching.
• This module will be repeated 5 times within the academic year.
Attendance
Full attendance is a requirement of Phase 3B. The lecturers will be provided with
lists of students expected to attend each session. Students who are unable to attend
must inform the lecturers of their absence before the session and must also contact
and inform the Phase 3B Academic Admin Assistant (Puan Norariza Bt Ariffin). At
the end of clinical attachments students must obtain the signature of their lecturers
to confirm satisfactory attendance.
Students who have not attended core teaching sessions or who have attended a
session where their experience was severely limited will be expected to arrange
informal clinical attachments during the revision period.

Assessment
Specialties will contribute to the Final Examination. Some specialties will provide
formative assessments during the module.

A separate evaluation form will be given to each student. Please complete the form
and return to the Phase 3B Academic Admin Assistant (Puan Norariza Ariffin) at the
end of the posting.

SPECIALTY MODULE 2
Timetable for each Group of Phase 3B
All sessions will begin at 8.00 am and till 1.00 pm. Afternoon sessions will begin at
2.00 pm and till 5.00 pm. You should report for your clinical attachment at 8.30
am on Monday when you will be given on detailed timetable for the week including
any group tutorials.

Radiology is the branch of medicine in which the interior of the human body is
visualized by using various forms of radiation.
Radiologists utilize an array of imaging technologies (such as radiography ,
ultrasound, computed tomography (CT), nuclear medicine, positron emission
tomography (PET) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)) to diagnose or treat
diseases. Interventional radiology is the performance of (usually minimally invasive)
medical procedures with the guidance of imaging technologies.
The acquisition of medical imaging is usually carried out by the radiographer or
radiologic technologist.

The 2 week posting offers a survey of general radiology and radiologic sub
specialities.
The afternoon sessions will include lectures for the students covering the multi-
specialties of radiology.

Objective
The general radiology elective is structured to provide an overview of the breadth of
diagnostic imaging, invasive radiology and an introduction to the fundamentals of
diagnostic radiology.

Method
Method of Evaluation:
End of posting test - modified OSCE .
Students must take attendance every day and ensure that the Lecturer sign in the
appropriate column after each teaching session.
Students are required to attend at least 80% of the teaching sessions, failing which
he will not be allowed to sit for the “ End of posting test “

• See new patients and discuss the cases with the SHO.
• Perform practical skills such as cannulation, suturing, recording and
interpreting ECGs.
• Participate in the assessment of seriously ill and major trauma cases and
observe the management of such cases.

• To learn to assess the collapsed patient and begin early effective resuscitation
according to internationally agreed guidelines.
• To learn the assessment and early management of minor injuries, seriously ill
