Session Descriptions
Keynote: Take a Page from the Perfect Digital Techbook Hall Davidson (Discovery Education)
Digital textbooks will hold much more than pdf's: media, social links, avatars, community rooms, and more.  They will be part
fixed, part live, part static, part wired.  We have the power to tap the fundamental engagement hotspots for students,
Techbooks will do that for teaching and learning.  Participants in the room will be part of this dynamic, real time, curriculum
resource. Become a co-author as we turn the page on the old way of thinking about digital resources.

Discovery Education Science and the 5E Model Patti Duncan (DEN Guru, PA LC Member)
Students learn by doing, and Discovery Education Science is a curriculum solution designed to inspire your students to think
like scientists as they immerse themselves in hands-on digital science content.  Explore the content and features in Discovery
Education Science and see how students are motivated by the interactive content, virtual labs, simulations, and other
engaging media.

Research shows that when teachers practice good formative assessment and students participate in it, BOTH achievement
and motivation increase. Save time and effort, and avoid frustration by leveraging the power of formative assessment to inform
your instruction. Come learn how to use formative assessment tools and free web 2.0 resources to find out what your students
know so you can teach them what they need.

Classroom 2.0: Differentiating Instruction with Matt Monjan (Discovery Education)

Discovery Education’s Student Center
During this session, you will learn how to put the power of learning at the fingertips of your students through Discovery
Education’s Student Center. We will also explore how educators can use Discovery Education’s media, interactive builder
tools, and more to reach different learners.

21st Century Learning with the Creative Cougars Janice Abernethy (PA DEN LC member)
Explore how a fifth grade class uses technology in a project-based classroom. View example projects in Language Arts, Math,
Science and Social Studies that put web 2.0 tools to work. From tackling topics that affect their local community to creating
wikispaces and blogs for topics they are learning about, Mrs. Abernethy’s Creative Cougars will show you what 21st century
learning is all about.

The Case of the Fractured Fiend: A Math Lesson Like No Other Matt Monjan (Discovery Education)
It was a cold and rainy day when she walked into my office.  I could tell she had it all, style, money, and was a good dancer -
she had good algorithm.  I asked her what I could do for her and she began to tell me a story, a story that had so much drama
it was full of wordy problems.  Then she mentioned the ransom note signed by the Fractured Fiend.  My ears perked up but I
had to admit the note was not a good sine.  She explained to me that her dear dog, Digit, was now missing and all that she
had to go on was the half of a note left behind.  We decided that my fee would be a quarter and I told her not to worry...I was
positive that I would get to the root of the problem.

During this session we'll explore the case by putting the concepts we learned through Discovery Education media on the case.
Using our newfound knowledge, we'll decipher the clues and find out just who is our Fractured Fiend and where he is hiding
the dear dog Digit.

The 21st Century Science Class for the 21st Century Student Patti Duncan (DEN Guru, PA LC member)
Today's science class has endless possibilities beyond the textbook. Come spend 50 minutes experiencing science like you
never have before. I will model a science lesson that incorporates a wide array of digital content, web 2.0 tools and
instructional strategies designed to build critical thinkers and problem solvers. The last ten minutes of the session will be for
questions, answers and discussion.

Make Way for Habitats, a Model Lesson Plan Kyle Schutt (Discovery Education)
Web 2.0 tools, digital media content, Google Earth field trips, audience response systems, interactive whiteboard lesson
plans...what impact do they have in your daily instruction? Come learn new instructional strategies for integrating all of these
21st Century teaching tools into your next model lesson plan. We’ll demonstrate new ways to utilize Discovery Education
streaming and Discovery Education Science resources to create interactive lesson plans that support all curricular areas.

Discovery: Beyond the Walls of the Classroom Traci Blazosky (DEN Guru, PA LC member)
No permission slips necessary! Join me as we take a trip in Google Earth, seeing how an interactive poster (using Glogster)
can incorporate the DE Builder Tools and DE Streaming. This session will model ways to integrate multimedia while
differentiating instruction and motivating student learning. You'll leave with a new outlook on how Discovery can “come alive”
and expand beyond the walls of your classroom through interactive posters.
