Publishers’ Prattle This is our 4th issue of Flair which completes our 1st year. It’s been fun and exciting as publishers and, from
what we continue to hear, it’s been fun and a great read for you!
We’ve tweaked each issue, just a little, striving for perfection. Our efforts were rewarded at our National
Conference in September 2010 with 2 awards for Flair!
You’ll notice we have a new look for our cover. Mike Nichols “illustration” class at WKU designed
several covers for Flair. We had a difficult time choosing the cover winners. What a talented group of artists!
Now that we have survived the holidays, we can gear up for all those
resolutions (silent and spoken) that we at least think about at the
beginning of the year. You won’t find a list of common resolutions
in this issue (you’ve seen them all before). What you will find is
inspiration. Sometimes, that’s all we need to make those tiny
improvements in our life that make us feel good. We think you will

which led to email, which led to instant messaging, and made a circle back to cell phones and the
now ever-popular text messaging. But, aside from the difficulty one can experience just learning
how to text message, there is also an entirely separate language one must learn in order to be a
text-guru, or to not be called an IBK (idiot behind keyboard).
There are several hundred text message abbreviations. Like dialect, the use of each varies
with each age group or region. It is impossible to memorize them all, so take this list of five often
misinterpreted abbreviations, and be well on your way to the 21st century.
LOL. This is the most universal and widely-used text abbreviation. LOL means “laugh out
loud.” Confusing to some, this doesn’t actually mean the reader is
laughing out loud; it simply means they are replying to something
they found funny or hilarious. It can also be used to
emphasize humor or sarcasm in a text. So don’t feel the
need to perform a full-belly rumble in order to use it. Just be aware that the older generation may
interpret LOL as “lots of love”!
G2G. Sounds like a Gatorade campaign, but it actually means “got to go.” Use this
when ending a conversation with someone. Hint: if numbers are used such as 2 or 4,
it usually means the word to or for.
JK. This one is pretty easy to figure out. It means “just kidding.” This little nugget
has actually worked its way into the English language. Just ask the valley-girl
nearest you.
L8r. This is not a typo. It actually looks exactly like it sounds,
“later.” This is usually used as a goodbye more than an explanation of
time. But feel free to use it as you please; the kids will be impressed.
PITA. This is not flatbread, or a misspelling of an animal rights
group. It actually means “pain in the...rear.” Or, something very
close. Put your new text knowledge to use and crack that code.
While that may be a start, there are still several more to learn. The
ever popular OMG “oh my God” to show disbelief or the now
rampantly used “BFF” “best friends forever” and a personal favorite
*$ for “Starbucks.” There are also some that are not so fun and are
actually used by the younger generation to warn of the approach of an
adult. If AIR or PIR is seen on a child’s or a teen’s screen, be wary.
This means “Adult in room” or “Parent in room” and he or she could
be up to something.
I recently came across a text language “spoof” for the older
generation:
CBM - Covered by Medicare
LOL - Living on Lipitor
GHA - Got heartburn again
FWIW - Forgot where I was
ROFL...CGU - Rolling on the floor laughing...and can’t get up
WAITT - Who am I talking to?
Keep these things in mind next time there is a keyboard in-hand. If technology is the
new future, this is the universal language. G2G, Thx 4 ur time. SYS, O&O.

MAKING
a MOVE
John Scott is trading one uniform for another. From
FIREMAN to MOVING MAN.
John graduated from college in North Carolina in 1988
with plans to be a teacher and coach. He came back to
Bowling Green to pursue that plan. Life and destiny had
another plan for him. In 1990, after rigorous testing and a 2
year wait, John became a Bowling Green fireman.
And so began a successful career where John made lifelong
friends and served our community.
When asked about the difficulties of being a fireman, John
confesses, “cooking for the crew of 9-14 was the most
stressful part of the job as a rookie!” He smiled as he recalled a
common prank that is played on most rookies. When the
alarm bell rings in the firehouse, the crew is expected to gear
up and be on the truck in just minutes. Missing a call is a
serious infraction. So, the seasoned veterans wait until a
rookie is in the shower then they manually set off the alarm.
Seeing the rookie “break his neck” to get dressed and on the
truck is a joke shared by all. This just proves a little laughter
goes a long way to relieve stress!
Like many firemen, John had a
part-time job that he worked on
his days off. He had a lawn service
that kept him busy as well as the
occasional “moving” job. John had
worked at Ford Furniture driving
the delivery truck while he was
waiting to become a fireman. His
charm as a delivery man must have
paid off because he continued to
get “moving man” calls.
In 2007, John started phasing out
of the mowing to devote more time
on his off days to the moving
business. By this time, John knew
that he would be retiring from the
fire department in October 2010. He
purchased a box truck and lined up
several firemen to work part-time and
so began his second career - MOVING
MAN. John is a “git ‘er done” kind of
guy. He remembers one move from
Bowling Green to Louisville on a
Sunday with a rented truck. The fully-
loaded truck broke down in Smiths
Grove. Since it was Sunday, he
couldn’t get a replacement truck or repairs. John called a tow
truck and was towed to the residence in Louisville. He got
the job done!
John Scott has transitioned from one career to another:

Claci A y e r s
Claci was a sophomore at Warren Central High
School when she applied to WKU’s Gatton Academy of
Mathematics and Science. This academy for gifted and
talented students accepts sixty students from the state
of Kentucky for their high school junior and senior years.
The Gatton Academy has been named one of sixteen
“Public Elite” American High Schools. Their stringent
requirements are much like applying to a top university.
Claci excelled on the ACT and SAT test requirements, the
essay and interview portions, and was accepted into the
class of 2011. Gatton Academy students must have more
than just scholastic ability. They must have the maturity
to make their own decisions academically and socially.
Claci and the other Gatton students live in Schneider
Hall on the WKU campus. They choose their own classes
and manage their own schedule. Claci has had the
opportunity to work with professors at WKU. She did
research work for Autism under Dr. Carrie Pritchard and
metabolism research under Dr. Nancy Ayers Rice. Claci’s
passion for pediatric medicine was rewarded last
summer when she was accepted as an intern in
Vanderbilt’s Pediatric Department.
Her love of dance started when she was four years
old and enrolled in Kathy Wise-Leonard’s dance class.
She now takes jazz, tap, ballet and point. In October,

Finding a true friend is hard to do. Finding more than one is a blessing. Finding
multiple true friends during a time in your life when you are just trying to find
yourself is a miracle. I recently had the chance to spend a weekend with five of
my “true friends.” The experience was refreshing, after starting what was a Be st Fr ie nd s To

our lives. Through out first heartbreak, to getting our license, to going
away to school, and now to planning one of our weddings, it was the
first time in my life I actually found myself wondering, “Where does
the time go?”
We talked about the people we were and the people we have
grown to be. Katie, the talker and the central unit of communication in
our group, is fittingly going to graduate with her communictions
degree. Rachel, the tall, popular supermodel look-alike, is going to
move to a big city to pursue fashion design. Ashley, always the
nurturer, even in high school when we learned about alcohol and its
limits, will be graduating from nursing school. Jessica, the beauty
queen who always helped us get ready for dances and prom, is already
a successful hairstylist. Leslie, the adventurer, moved to Colorado in
search of the opportunities offered in the West. And I, the shy, quiet
girl with my “Save the Whales” tee-shirt, will be pursuing a career in,
what else, journalism.
It is exciting and nostalgic to see your created family growing and
