Lecture Topic:
During the lecture, take notes here.
What is the relationship between Latin America (LA) and the US?
Why is the relationship between LA and the US unbalanced at best?
How have each of these entities utilized their relationship to the other?
In LA, many of the individuals living there speak Romance Languages (i.e., those which have been
derived from Latin)
LA countries were generally:
-former colonies of France, Spain, Portugal, etc.
-share a common language base
-both of these become shaky in conjunction with the Caribbean Islands
-often have much Roman Catholic heritage, but others do exist (native religions,
Protestantism, Judaism)
-plagued with economic and technological advancement leading to the lack of ability to
form a world power (Brazil seems to be moving out of this stereotype)
-incredibly diverse
-large populations of mestizos, Africans, and Europeans
-large number of spoken languages
-virtually all world religions are practiced in LA
